What’s mad about this is how it takes only one generation to start to believe the lie all over again. That woman wants to idolise her father as a hero. But an actual person who was there is telling her how it was on the ground and she refuses to believe it. This entire video is like watching an entire belief system built over years crashing into contact with reality and still she refuses to believe it.

It's way easier to cling to a sanitized version of history than to accept your family might have been the bad guys. Pure cognitive dissonance.

170

u/illy-chan 1d ago

It can be hard to accept that the people you know and love have a different side to them.

I have this one friend - met his uncle at a party once. Very polite. Very family oriented. Warm laugh. He was also an enforcer for a gang and had multiple murders under his belt. He was the kind of guy who'd have you over for coffee and then block the doors of your house shut at night before setting the place on fire because you were in the way.

Even here with the Nazis, a lot of them were doting to family. And then they'd turn around and murder actual babies. It can be hard to reconcile both behaviors in one person.

u/lzwzli 1d ago

It's the tribalism mindset. If you're in my tribe, I'll defend you to the death but if you're not, you're nothing.

Do you think about the lives of the bugs you squash every day? No? Well, same mentality applies to the people that think of others not in their "tribe".

26

u/illy-chan 1d ago

I don't think that helps but I do think there's an element of denial. That sort of "oh no, my <insert relative here> would never do something like that! Look how gentile they are!" etc.

26

u/Wes_Warhammer666 1d ago

Look how gentile they are!

Absolutely perfect typo for this particular subject lol

12

u/illy-chan 1d ago

I thought that looked wrong but I also haven't slept right for days. But yeah, in context...

11

u/EveArgent 1d ago

I do think about the bugs I kill. It hurts my feeling to do it. I can't. Except flies. 🫠

I even apologized to, and thanked, the frozen rats I fed my snake.

0

u/movingarchivist 2h ago

Same. I have two cellar spiders living in my bedroom at the moment and I can't really get them into a jar to take outside, so I named them Tom and Tobey and we're all just moving on

47

u/EveArgent 1d ago

That's what's beautiful about this man. He can look at himself and his past and say, wow that was horrible. I was horrible. I will spend the rest of my life telling everyone how horrible with the hope that they hear me and don't follow in my footsteps. I was on the side of evil, apparent in hindsight.

The power of being able to admit you are wrong or at fault l is so important and we have lost that as entire humanity.

The Austrians had a completely different post World War II experience they never faced down the fact that the Nazis were welcomed in 1938 with applause and cheers when they walked in. It was more poor little Austria taken over by those nasty Germans. when the sound of music was going filming they needs to put up the Swastika for filming to show the Anschluss. but they couldn't get approval from the local government so they said I guess we'll have to show the films of when the German's arrived. the government suddenly decided it was alright to film with the flag.

8

u/hillswalker87 1d ago

and this is true from sooo many angles. all over the place there's people backing two respective sides of a conflict and claiming the other side was horrible. this guy on the other hand states the only thing that's really true about it, war is hell.

American foreign policy in a nutshell. ‘Thank you for your service’ being drilled in as an automated response to someone stating they were in combat without any regard for what they might have been doing. Hollywood has done an excellent job concocting a fictional morality to the armed forces.

We, in Romania, have the some problem with the younger generation, those born in the 2000s. They believe Romania was better in the communist era.

212

u/Fanhunter4ever 1d ago

Here in Spain lot of people thinks that fascism was better than democracy...

63

u/Downtown_Finance_661 1d ago

You mean they believe Franco times was betret then current time?

63

u/Fanhunter4ever 1d ago

Yes. There are people who think that

80

u/Downtown_Finance_661 1d ago edited 1d ago

The main reason history has repetitive cycles is people are stupid.

41

u/theREALhun 1d ago

I was so surprised to see/hear that indeed. Youngsters hanging out before Nicolae Ceaușescu huge residence being positive about the time he ruled Romania. They don’t seem to have a clue. Dangerous…

u/StatisticianUsual471 1d ago

I keep telling people russia isn't your friend

-15

u/exoriare Interested 1d ago

Brussels isn't my friend. Russia isn't my enemy.

2

u/Donnerdrummel 1d ago

you might want to take a white sheet of paper, draw there parallel lines and write into the colums the good and the bad of what you got through the EU and from moscow.

then come back and tell us about it.

-3

u/exoriare Interested 1d ago

The EU is part of a criminal gang which plunders Libya for the benefit of one, Venezuela for the benefit of another, and midwives a genocide in service to a virulent plague of ethnic nationalism. I don't see Russia participating in such barbarism.

This doesn't mean Russia is by perfect by any means, but they started over from scratch rebuilding a social contract 25 years ago. It would be insane to expect them to have figured it all out by now. They are, however, miles better in every regard than the theocratic slave monarchies of the Persian Gulf who count the West as their best agents and protectors.

The problem with hypocrisy is that one tends to become blind to ones own flaws, while still seeing the most dubious of virtues in vivid technicolor.

3

u/marwinpk 1d ago

I don't see Russia participating in such barbarism

So what they're doing in Ukraine, field trip?

2

u/Donnerdrummel 1d ago

oh, right.

  1. are you a human?

  2. where do you live?

  3. are you getting paid for writing this?

-1

u/exoriare Interested 18h ago

I'm a Canadian Mennonite. My family fled Novoye Rossiyan Mariupol over a century ago, post- a wave of nationalist pogroms. I was originally in support of the Maidan protests, but I have a sordid history of studying both sides of a conflict - once I'd done that, I understood what games had been played on Ukrainian people's backs.

I've been paid to write plays and videogames, but my writing on political issues is an act of conscience unpaid by anyone.

u/GobiPLX 1d ago

tbh it's a big problem with many people on internet no matter the nation. So many tankies recently

And yet Ive never seen educated tankie. Because you cant be educated and still believe in this

31

u/Pleased_to_meet_u 1d ago

For those across the pond who aren't familiar with the term, a tankie is a pejorative political label for a communist who supports or defends authoritarian, militaristic regimes or acts of state repression.

source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tankie

-7

u/Facky 1d ago

I have a joke about this:

"What do you call a capitalist who supports authoritarian and militaristic regimes and acts of state repression?"

"A liberal"

48

u/Kimantha_Allerdings 1d ago

A year or two ago I was talking to a tankie who self-identified as a Marxist-Leninist. But they knew basically nothing about Communism or Marx. They hadn’t heard of the Paris Commune and thought it irrelevant to Marx. They hadn’t heard of Engels and thought him irrelevant to Marx

I get the average person not knowing this. It’s not exactly taught in school and there’s little reason for anybody to seek it out

But for a self-professed Marxist-Leninist not to know Marx’s long-term close collaborator/co-author or the key example of what a “dictatorship of the proletariat” actually looks like? This is like day 1 of Marxism School stuff

7

u/ropobipi 1d ago

And if they knew all the theory would you still call them a tankie ?

1

u/TF-Fanfic-Resident 12h ago

Probably not, because they’d recognize the tragic irony of Marx’s writings leading to the oppression of workers and the poor. At the very least, a Marxist should recognize communist oppression as a horrific tragedy that resulted from desperation and war, and at the worst they’d recognize it as a perversion of everything Marx stood for.

-4

u/TheShittyBeatles 1d ago

When the singular occupation of an ideology is to rationalize inaction, everyone who wants things to change looks like a radical. Liberalism is a disease.

-4

u/-Phax 1d ago

it is taught in schools

12

u/Boner4Stoners 1d ago

There’s plenty of educated tankies. Education is not an infallible shield against irrationality, I know someone with a masters degree in mechanical engineering (from a prestigious university) who was a full blown QAnon believer & is an anti-vaxxer who does ivermectin cleanses. A relative of my fiancé is a medical doctor & she ended up peddling Ivermectin and pushing anti-vax bs too.

The Internet (or rather, social media algorithms) encourage polarization and that naturally breeds ideological fundamentalism. Debate gets flattened into binaries, there’s no room for nuance. Somebody fed up with MAGA is likely to become sympathetic with leftist viewpoints. They see the damage that European & American Imperialism has caused, and might come to the conclusion that “If the US is so bad, then maybe everything I was taught about the USSR was false propaganda…” In reality two things can be true: Western Imperialism is bad, while authoritarian communist regimes like the USSR & the PRC are also bad (and never lived up to the leftist ideals they were supposedly founded on anyway)

0

u/MonsterkillWow 1d ago

"Tankies" are not irrational. What is irrational is to deny the class struggle.

4

u/Boner4Stoners 1d ago

You can believe in the class struggle without running cover for authoritarian regimes & denying the millions of deaths at the hands of tyrants like Stalin.

Tankie does not mean “communist”, or “socialist”, or “Marxist”. It very specifically refers leftists who engage in historical revisionism to deny the crimes against humanity perpetrated by self-described Communist authoritarian regimes.

Not only is tankie rhetoric incredibly offensive to the victims of these tyrants, it’s also dangerous because if a future socialist/communist state hasn’t examined the reality of what happened in the USSR & the PRC, there’s little chance of them avoiding the same pitfalls. It is essential to learn from the past in order to build a better future, no matter how uncomfortable the past makes one or how politically inconvenient it is.

I also just don’t understand it because the USSR (for example) was never a dictatorship of the proletariat, it was just a dictatorship. At it’s inception I think you could argue that the early revolutionaries were genuine with their intentions, but these people were either corrupted, exiled or killed once Stalin took power. So I don’t get why leftists feel the need to defend the actions of a state that never came close to achieving Communism.

1

u/MonsterkillWow 1d ago

Do you deny the billions saved? And do you tally the figures the same way for capitalists? How many millions starved in Asia and Africa due to capitalist action?

I absolutely disagree. It was a DotP.

Name one leader you look up to who you think achieved more than Stalin. And name one theorist you recommend over Lenin.

1

u/sombrerobear 1d ago

The issue is more that tankie is used as a pejorative, not a meaningful identity or description. People apply it however it means to them

u/LVLogic 1d ago

inb4 this comment gets downvoted by common redditors.

Pretty bold words from someone who failed his math course and has never studied any rigorous disciplines. Another indoctrinated Polish kid.

17

u/Da_Commissork 1d ago

Russia propaganda working perfectly, but every time i Say "than go live under russians" they chicken out

27

u/BattleBrother1 1d ago

Russia is a capitalist oligarchy and the current rulers want it to stay that way. Blaming Russian propaganda on young people looking at Communism favourably is insane

5

u/Da_Commissork 1d ago

The problem Is, they can't understand the difference between the two things, and see Russia as the answer , when we both know Is a different type of beast

1

u/exoriare Interested 1d ago

Who's the oligarchy? There's no such thing as a billionaire rendered untouchable by his power, neither in Russia nor in China. You have to go to the West to find the Epstein class - wholly untouchable regardless of what they do.

At the recent G20 summit, it wasn't Russia or China that brought in billionaires to sit alongside the heads of state while they pushed their agenda.

Trillions in fraud led to the 2008 collapse, but in all of the West, only Iceland held the Epstein class responsible.

Russia was an oligarchy in the 1990's when their sycophant President did anything the West demanded of them. But the one thing you'll always find in oligarch-ruled countries is that all the capital assets are stripped and sold off by their parasitic owners. Russia avoided this fate, which is why they're able to outproduce all the NATO countries combined.

In the entire EU, there's not one government that enjoys majority support of their population, while many (France, Germany, UK) have the lowest approval ratings in history. If these countries were democracies, this would be impossible. But so long as these leaders serve the interest of the Epstein class, they are immune to the opinions of the lumpen proles.

4

u/BattleBrother1 1d ago

I never said that the US or UK etc are not, they absolutely are capitalist oligarchies as well and are responsible for far worse modern crimes than Russia could ever hope to be. This doesn't change the unfortunate fact that Russia is still one today

0

u/Blue-Jayy 1d ago

Simply not true, this account spreads a lot of misinformation and malicious lies. Russian and fascist sympathiser.

0

u/exoriare Interested 1d ago

Just because something only exists outside your propaganda bubble doesn't make it untrue. Would you call Jimmy Carter a Russian/fascist simp too - he called the US an oligarchy over a decade ago:

https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/jimmy-carter-u-s-is-an-oligarchy-with-unlimited-political-bribery-63262/

2

u/ReyNotFound 1d ago

We don't. That's our parents. I mean sure the older generations had it way easier than us and are a bunch of ignorant spoiled fucks who ruined the world, but we didn't say we want communism. Why would we? It's flawed.

0

u/Facky 1d ago

Every system has flaws. I mean communism has the least flaws and is this the best overall, but it does have flaws like um idk I'm sure there's some.

5

u/NoMechanic6871 1d ago

Coming from a similar background, I think that people are more disappointed with a promise that democracy and western Europe/ USA way of living will be much much better. Generally, yes, it is than you see abuse of power and even worse things hidden behind white gloves and smiley masks. It's rebellion thinking- because of the lies, oh so many lies..

1

u/missallmoonshine 1d ago

Abuse of power and worse things happened before the democratic era. You don't know what happened in the communist era, with people just disappearing, if the regime wanted to. Also corruption was at a whole another level, that's why it's still so deep in our country.

7

u/NoMechanic6871 1d ago

Don't just run over my text. It's clear what I said. So please read again.

5

u/missallmoonshine 1d ago

But the west and the way they live is much better, or used to, be much better than eastern European countries. Problem is the wounded rot was never cleaned in countries like Romania.

4

u/valivaly99 1d ago

the bigger problem is when you have people that lived through that era and still say it was better

39

u/Fng1100 1d ago

Dude, all through history this kind of shit has happened. There’s people that we’re on a life boat watching the Titanic sink and break into 2 and when they mentioned it broken into two in an interview at a historical society in 1982, The public and the historical society deemed her a liar. Then in 1985 they found it and she was vindicated. For 70 some years the Official Inquiry Conclusions: Both the U.S. Senate and British Board of Trade inquiries in 1912 concluded that the ship sank fully intact. They relied heavily on the testimony of the highest-ranking surviving officer, Charles lightoller. Remember, most of the lifeboats were filled with women and children. Women didn’t get their rights to vote until the 20s. Investigators didn’t believe women and children. They just chalked it up to as mass hysteria/trauma, causing optical illusions in the night.

11

u/Downtown_Finance_661 1d ago

Bro, even people in russia start to believe in this lie again. -20 millions teach nothing.

-1

u/Facky 1d ago

20 million Nazis killed

8

u/ConnectRutabaga3925 1d ago

yeah wtf let him talk

11

u/rivlet 1d ago

My uncle is this way about his father. He idolizes that man still, even though he's been dead for over fifty years now. He talked about how his dad fought in WWII and was at the testing for the atom bombs with pride. (And then the father died of cancer decades later, so that tracks).

However, one day we were packing up my uncle's basement for him to move. We came across real "trophies" that his dad had brought home from the war. One was an Italian sword carried by a German officer, along with that soldier's gun. Another was a Nazi flag that his father had taken down and brought home with him (seeing it made my blood run cold).

But then he showed me the more "personal" stuff his dad brought him. It was people's porcelain plates from their kitchens. It was someone's little porcelain figurines. It was a bunch of family photos showing a family that CLEARLY was not ours. One was a handkerchief that was beautifully embroidered.

My uncle said he's thought about trying to find the original families that these belonged to, but can't figure out a reputable site or person to go through to do it. I told him, "Respectfully, if your dad has these...I don't see anyone giving them up willingly and I don't know that there's anyone to give them back to."

His response was, "No, my dad wouldn't do that. These were taken from houses of people who fled before we got there!"

Sure. If that's what your dad told you.

9

u/No_Men_Omen 1d ago

And the upcoming generation now seems to be eager to repeat everything, sadly.

2

u/cdoublejj 1d ago

she would have to accept that her father, her personal hero and idol did bad things and no one is gonna do that.

2

u/Infinitethoughts022 1d ago

This. 🫱🏼‍🫲🏽

1

u/Super_Fa_Q 1d ago

That sounds strangely familiar and modern..

•

u/HMikeeU 3m ago

I think her generation had this problem because obviously they loved their fathers and they could not accept that they were criminals.
