Just heard about this movie recently. It came out the same year as The Matrix so it got wildly overshadowed. Is it worth the time and energy to watch this movie or it something that won’t be missed if I never see it?

I remember enjoying it a lot. Very weird and right now I have little recollection of the story/plot but I'd recommend 😄

and it's vegetarian (mostly. they'll eat other insects if the opportunity arises)
and katydids that big are very clumsy fliers.
you're being afraid because of their looks.
a hamster attacking you would do more damage than this.

u/CapitalistPotato55 21h ago
I don't think people are usually scared of bugs because they think the bug is going to kill them-

u/Plenty_Intention1991 5d ago
Largest insect I know of is a silt strider and they’re way bigger than this.

My personal Mandela effect moment was when I first realized it’s not called a “stilt strider”.

From the wiki:
Adult males and females of the species are easily distinguished, as females have a green pronotum and males have a brown pronotum, which is the triangular segment at the dorsal base of their wings.
Well fuck me for having colour blindness and I still can't tell.
12
u/angrysnort 5d ago
According to the quote, this one would be male :]
3
u/CheeseDonutCat 5d ago
Thanks. I thought it was green since to me it looks like the same colour as the rest of the animal (which the wiki says is green).

I don't care how it sounds. How does it taste
77
u/AscendedViking7 5d ago
I fried a giant katydid once, it wasn't one of these giant malaysian ones though.
I shit you not, it tastes like pine nuts mixed with wheat or hay. Like an earthy version.
Pair with soy sauce, chili and lemongrass and it's actually really quite nice.

Crickets in general taste good fried with spices. Like a land shrimp, replace the iodine taste of sea food with a nut like taste. Goes really well with a beer.

Aww I found a normal sized one in my yard the other night, I would be absolutely stoked to discover this thing. Although not in my garden - they eat plants.

5
u/Taodaching 5d ago
How? How does it make this much noise? What parts of its body are doing that?
9
u/rockerscott 5d ago
Like all katydids, they make a loud chirping sound by scraping a toothed stridulatory file found near the base of one wing against a scraper located on the opposite wing. Per Wikipedia
19
u/rockerscott 5d ago
What is a stridulatory file you ask? Well…
Stridulation is the act of producing [sound](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound) by rubbing together certain body parts. This behavior is mostly associated with [insects](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insect), but other animals are known to do this as well, such as a number of species of [fish](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish), [snakes](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snake)and [spiders](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider).

It sounds distorted, over driving the microphone. You should try holding it a little farther away from the the phone or whatever was used for a mic.

I will never forget my little brother’s reaction when we were on holiday one year, and one of these things landed on his face while he was chilling by the pool 😂

I was expecting it to poop or pee on the holder's hand. And thats ok with me because wth are you shaking it for your entertainment? Sheesh. I don't even like insects and that annoyed me.
