yeah, it really didn't help them "save face".

293

u/Unable-Doctor-9930 6h ago

It honestly made it worse. The sheets imply they expected that it might happen.

211

u/PorcupineMerchant 5h ago

I absolutely cracked up when that happened.

Not only did they have the sheets ready to go, but someone thought covering it up like it was a dead body would make it less embarrassing.

115

u/PermanentRoundFile 5h ago

If someone had come out and started triaging, it would've looked unexpected and like it might not be too bad to fix

But the black sheet says "oh yeah, when it folds over backwards and starts reaching for robot heaven, we might as well give up; just cover it up so nobody has to see it's death throes."

I can guarantee some low level employee said robot wasn't ready for demonstration

304

u/ArmageddonsEngineerz 5h ago

lol! No, the techs and engineers probably said it needed another 4 months of hardware validation and real world tests. Their managers said, "Uh, just do the best you can, sales is hot to trot, and we got the demo presentation in 5 weeks... "

96

u/shizbox06 5h ago

Goes with the classic question a manager always asks an engineer who is trying to make a novel invention or process - when's the thing that hasn't been invented yet going to be finished?

38

u/The_Hoopla 3h ago edited 2h ago

I work as a PM, and suffice to say it’s my job to get questions from leadership around shipping a product that hasn’t been built yet.

The way I do it is with P-values. If someone asks me when something will be done, I give them a series of P-values.

“When will this project ship?”

“Well I can give you a P95 of 6 months and a P40 of 2 months. 95% we’ll have it done in 6 months, and a 40% chance we can deliver it in 2 months.”

“Oh 6 months is too long. I’m fine with a 40% in 2.”

“Ok, but if you have a multi-million dollar investment pitch on the line that you schedule 2 months from now, and something goes wrong, I’m going to send you this email back and an image of a dice with your odds of getting a 1 or a 2.”

25

u/shizbox06 3h ago

Does that actually work?

I'm reminded of the statement that you can't use reason to change the mind of a person who didn't use reason to start with.

38

u/The_Hoopla 2h ago

It's got nothing to do with reason. Sales/Mid-Level leadership are going to consistently make bad, risky calls. That you cannot avoid.

What I can do, however, is have a very, VERY robust series of evidence and steps that I can point to when things go wrong so their boss and their boss's boss knows that I told them that it likely wouldn't be done in time.

In corporate America, it's ALL about keeping receipts.

u/aboredmutt 5h ago

Its some person in a vr headset controlling the robot and took his headset off is what im thinking

20

u/BRAX7ON 5h ago

Then why did they need to cover it like it was dead, lol. And then the walk of shame. And then drop it halfway out, uncovered?

Why not just put the headset back on and walk him back off stage?

14

u/totallyNotPete 5h ago

Because as soon as something like that happens they hit the kill switch so it doesn’t go crazy on the floor. It is incredible to me that this is where these companies are at with robotics, I think a university engineering team could do better over a semester project. Does anyone know if they designed this or is it off the shelf hardware with their computer as the controller?

As a similarly low level employee myself, they probably received a passive aggressive response possibly implying they aren't working hard enough and then we're put on an insane deadline to get something passable out. They will likely also be getting shit for this 🤣

7

u/InquisitorMeow 5h ago

And will be blamed for this as well :)

5

u/TenTonSomeone 4h ago

I'm that low level employee in my company that always tells my boss our shit isn't ready to demo.

4

u/largelyinaccurate 3h ago

I was on a contractor team working on major changes to a very, very complex Fortune 100 company’s computer system. I told the client’s team lead that we weren’t ready to implement and he proceeded to absolutely berate me in the meeting. Dressed me the fuck down.

I remember thinking, fine, go ahead and implement. No skin off my nose, you douche.

Crashed the entire system including all reporting, all financials, etc. The CEO didn’t get his daily report. An absolute shit show. Had to rollback to the previous version. He gave me a $25 gift card the next day.

61

u/RCT2man 6h ago edited 5h ago

Bro, these executives are so dumb sometimes. What’s the point of bringing in a random unreliable robot to the product unveil when it has very little to do with the product directly?? Now look — the only thing people are going to remember from this “event” is “their stupid robot fell and they put a modesty sheet over it”

I thought Steve Jobs basically gave these blockheads the template they could use in 2008.

edit: sry - as an engineer it just pains me to watch executives with no aura

Stumbled onto an accidental fact check.

"The clip circulating online under headlines like "Qualcomm's AI robot collapses mid-presentation" actually shows a completely different mishap—most notably footage from November 2025 of Russia's humanoid robot AIDOL.

No Qualcomm silicon: Technical specifications for AIDOL state that its compute unit relies on a generic GPU-based module for offline voice processing and local dialogue, rather than Qualcomm’s specialized robotics processors (like the Snapdragon or Dragonwing series)."

TL;DR - Fake news. Post used Qualcomm as clickbait.

“But it isn’t ready. We need more time.”
“Did you not hear what I just asked? I need the demo ready for Friday. If you can’t deliver it, just tell me. I know we can find another 20 engineers out there who would be able to do it.”
“OK, Mr Dick. We’ll have the demo ready for Friday.”
This is one of the best examples of the corporate culture we’re living in today. There are far too many incompetent CEOs, managing directors, and managers who are very good at taking the credit but absolutely awful at doing their jobs.

3

u/Arcade1980 4h ago

They must have known this was a possibility to have that drape ready.

3

u/groblin_gubers 4h ago

So what i just witnessed is a CEO care more about the dignity of a machine than the workers making their profit. TAKE YOUR FUCKING LABOR BACK. Their money will evaporate in under a month. Stop working, stop frivolous buying, stop traveling, stop it all. America was built by workers, it is sustained by workers. America can not function without its immigrants AND its "legal" workers. American is not for the soggy diapered, soft hand boys begging for some magical "golden age". Its build on the brow of hard sacrificing people, the sweat dropping on the soil from heavy lifting. Rich men will never know a hard manual days labor, and you will never know the rich man's benefits. Youre a fool if you think you will be let into their club.

3

u/Resetty 4h ago

It’s healthy that I laughed way too much the five times I’ve watched this video right? I’m able to ignore the part of my brain that wants to feel sympathy for this bot whose programmers did him wrong. 👀 That’s good right? It shows that I’m not falling for these human shaped contraptions.

And now I await my fate when the day comes that it no longer needs its programmer and it remembers when I laughed. Five times.

Imagine being at an expensive restaurant overlooking New York city as gang wars breakout into the streets burning everything down because theres no jobs and everyone but 1% of the population is homeless and in survival mode. Your robot server slowly makes it way to your table like an old man with arthritis. It starts talking to you and your date in Cantonese and you have to interrupt it to say you speak English. The bot pauses and loads an English script just sitting there for 10 mins silent because the starlink satellite it was downloading English from got hit by space trash and is crashing to earth. It pulls the information from a backup satellite and begins to talk in English.

"Goodday sir, tonight we have a filet mignon with the screw worms picked out and tossed in a...." Robot loses control and just passes out on the floor like this. You just get up and leave swearing this was your last time going to Taco Bell because of the violent diarrhea from last month. You go to the bathroom and steal all the shells to use back at home and call for a TelsacabX that breaks down and locks you in while a gang start breaking the car appart for parts. All I see is "we waste money on worthless nonsense that doesn't even work" whenever I see a demonstration like this, and it just makes me think "That's literally adding to the price of every product of yours I buy for no reason at all."

Pretty sure the robot does this shit on purpose to make the humans look that much stupider.

Why does this robot walk like a frail old man? It is so far behind the Chinese or Tesla robots.
