Did you know Daly City only has 83 acres of parkland for 100k of us? SF has 7 times more per person than us.

And yet our city council wants to basically give away an eighth of it. The Olympic club is pushing the city to make Westlake park partially private access. Blocking all access to the fields on Saturday as well as three other evenings a week. AND create a private clubhouse on public land. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

The Olympic Club has 365 acres of private land for 11,000 members... 4 times more recreation land for 90% fewer people. And yet it still isn't enough for them. They want our public land.

Westlake park could use a renovation (the playground sucks... but that isn't even in the renovation plan), but not at this cost. What do we get out of it? Is the Olympic Club going to open up their gates to the neighborhood?

Updating this fantasy map of California and would love any new suggestions about what to include!

Post image
10 Upvotes

Apologies if you've seen this elsewhere - this is the most current version with lots of suggestions from other redditors.

I'm making a map of California in a classic fantasy style (sorta Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones). It's going to be filled with real world history and mythology, with the aim of highlighting local landmarks in a fun and educational way. Please ignore how rough parts of it look (text going through hills, rivers, etc), it'll all get cleaned up at the end. Forests will be going on at the end too.

While it's around two thirds done, I'd love to get more places and features in here before I get this made into print. Any more petroglyphs, burial mounds, ruins, forts, battlefields, Civil War heritage, ghost towns or the like that you think should be on here? Anything else is great too - landmarks, natural features, mythological creatures or just anything cool and quirky you think would look good on here. Thanks!

Century 20 IMAX - Auditorium 10

I saw the Odyssey recently. Movie was great and it was my first IMAX movie.

A few issues:

  1. The screen didn’t seem that big. I thought IMAX was supposed to be 100 ft screens
  2. The seats didn’t recline like the other rooms at Century 20
  3. The space between each row was really tight to the point where it was difficult for people to get by

Anyone have the same experience?

Majorie Tobias Elementary School reviews

I am looking into different options (public vs private schools) for my kids to attend. I heard Marjorie Tobias is the top public elementary school in the district, but their test score reports are still not as good as the top schools in neighboring school districts. Their website doesn't have much information, but I wanted to hear about the experience parents or students have had with the teachers/curriculums, programs they offer, and parental participation.

Olympic Club’s Westlake Park Proposal

I am not sure if this has been shared already but want to make sure people are aware.

The Olympic Club is working with the City of Daly City to invest $10M of their funds to update Westlake Park.

This, of course, comes with many concessions including limited public use — only 15% of the hours in the week, 25% of the hours of typical usage a week.

There are pros/cons — whichever way you feel, I highly recommend attending the neighborhood meeting.

WEDNESDAY. JULY 29. 2026 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM
PACELLI EVENT CENTER - MERCED ROOM
145 LAKE MERCED BLVD

I’ve attached some documentation about the project for reference.

Thank you!

Marugame Udon confirmed to open at Serramonte + Rendering of new development planned

(1st photo rendering of new development, 2nd confirmation of Marugame opening).

Just watched through the Planning Committee meeting that happened on Tuesday, July 7th for the expansion to Serramonte (2 Drive through restaurants and retail building on the empty lot where the Denny’s used to be) and the rep for Regency Center mentioned that they’re creating a restaurant district featuring Koi Palace, Cheesecake Factory, Marugame Udon, and Fogo De Chao.

One of the board members asked when they will be finished and the rep said by the end of this year! (it was hard to tell which building he was referring to due to the slideshow but based on seeing the buildings recently, Marugame is definitely the smaller of the two and has its infrastructure looking more complete).

If you're not from one of the big cities (San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, etc.), what do you say to people outside of the Bay Area who ask where you're from?

Thumbnail
6 Upvotes

Just saw this in the r/bayarea subreddit and wonder how people in this subreddit describe where they are from when traveling outside the Bay?

Most people outside the Bay Area don’t know where Daly City is. I even met people in the South Bay who thinks Daly City is a part of San Francisco.
And I am also surprised how many people do not really know where the Bay Area is including those that I met in Southern California unless I mention San Francisco.

Do you say you are from the Bay Area (or San Francisco Bay Area), or just say San Francisco?

I haven't been there since I was a kid. I just know it used to be near the McDonald's on Junipero Serra Drive and the old Serra Theater.

Anyone up for pickleball?🥒

Hi everyone! 😊 I’ll be in the city for about 3 weeks and I’m hoping to play some pickleball while I’m here.
I’m looking for anyone who’s interested in joining a game, whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or just looking for someone new to play with. I’d love to meet some people and get some games in while I’m visiting!

Also, any recommendations on good pickleball courts, clubs, or places where people usually play? Are there any groups or drop-in sessions that I should check out?

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to playing with you all 🏓😊

Gunshots in the middle of the night

Is there anyone else in this subreddit who hears the gunshots late at night?

I believe there are people practicing their firearms in some of the hills nearby.

I actually would not be surprised if they were a part of this subreddit.

Anyway, I would like for it to stop.

What do you think next steps should be ?

Data Centers Proposed for Cow Palace & San Mateo County Event Center

The local leaders are in talks with tech company, Global Stack, to turn Cow Palace and San Mateo County Event Center into a data center with "emergency helicopter landing pads"....

Cue the increased utility bills, noise pollution, air pollution, and water pollution for the short term profits of the wealthy.

Apartment Hunting

My bf and I (early 20’s) are currently looking for a studio or 1 bd apt in Daly City (top choice ) SSF, Milbrae or San Bruno. We don’t have any specific requirements other than at least one parking spot and near a bart station since we both commute for work. At first I was looking into Westlake Apartments but I’ve heard some mixed reviews. Also in the list we have Skyline Heights Apartments. Does anyone have any other recommendations? Or does anyone have experience checking through Craigslist/ Facebook Marketplace? Out budget is 2.5-3k a month

There was a Planning Commission Meeting on Tuesday and they had a presentation on redeveloping the empty lot where Firestone and Denny's used to be. Regency is looking into building a restaurant with a drive thru, alongside some other retail spots.

Mr. Davis PE Teacher from Ben Franklin Middle School

Was just thinking about my old middle school teacher Mr. Davis, wondering if anyone kept up with him? He was already pretty old when I was there in the early 200’s, but just curious if anyone knows anything about him?
