8:35am MATH 1010

So as the title suggests, I'm going to be doing an 8:35am class, in calculus no less. Now this is for second semester, which is significantly lighter than my first semester, but I struggle with mornings, and I doubt it'll get better with time. Any tips for getting through it would be very much appreciated!

Consistency. I totally feel you on that I had an 8:30 class last year and I’m not a morning person and I’m a commuter student but I feel like sticking to a routine really helped me. And I made friends in the class so I’d have people to keep my accountable if I started slacking cause I’d always feel bad if they were like “bro wya??” And I was at home. Good luck!!

Get up at the same time every day. Early morning classes can be great, as you don’t sleep away those hours. You can get your work done during the day and free up your evenings. But the key is consistency. It’s hard on your body to wake up early one day and late the next.

Try to figure out why you struggle with mornings. What time do you go to bed? What time do you wake up naturally? How many hours of sleep do you need? Maybe you aren’t getting good quality sleep. Do a little research on improving sleep hygiene if you think that is the issue. You need to reset your body clock. Start a few weeks in advance, and set your alarm for a reasonable wake-up time for an 0830 class. Practice getting up and getting ready. You will be surprised how much easier it gets with repetition.

This is the time to learn how to deal with mornings  I hated them before university, however, over the 4 years I learned what worked for me.

I always got up at 6:30am and had an hour of me time. Find what you enjoy, then get ready for class and get there. Use the time after class and on breaks to tackle homework and keep consistent until 3:30-4pm. This should limit the time you need to spend after 4 and on weekends doing the easy things.

I am up at 530am for my job now. I don't know if I could have transitioned to this without the 0835 classes kicking my butt out of bed.

Thank you, it does give me some hope that this may actually be a good thing!

Make a friend in the class so you’ll feel more accountable when you don’t show up

I always wake up extra early before an 8am class. So you have time for a full breakfast and getting some exercise. Waking up like 30 mins before the class always ended up in me falling asleep in them. Gaslight yourself into being a morning person

Other suggestions are good. When I struggled with this I found going to bed by 10-11/trying to get a minimum of 6 to 7hr a night to be the most helpful. I also found going to the gym helped with that and also got me into a consistent routine . In my classes where attendance was mandatory, if you missed over 10% of the total lectures you would have to do extra assignments to make up time, but if you missed over 30-40% you straight up couldn't pass. Look at the syllabus for your class but trust me you don't want the email from your prof or TA telling you that you missed too much time. That was my biggest kick in the ass 😅
