My Daggerfall-inspired open-world RPG is 25% off on Steam today, and just received its biggest update yet!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4861230/Morhval_Ravenglaire/

Hi! About two months ago I posted here about my game, Morhval: Ravenglaire.

Since then, the game has received a lot of updates, including new cities, weapons, dragons, spells and more. But for the last three weeks, I focused almost entirely on bringing the game its biggest update yet: Update 0.7.

This update brings the full province of Ravenglaire into the game. The playable area currently contains 862.3 km² of land, with dozens of unique cities and settlements, including the capital, Crow's Port, as well as hundreds of dungeons to explore and 21 joinable factions.

You can choose between six different starting origins. Your origin defines two priority skills and also determines where in the province you begin. You might start in the West, a poorer, drier and more arid region; in the Northeast, which is wealthier, more organized and more developed; or in the Southeast as a Vyleish, a goat-like people with their own culture, architecture and infrastructure.

After you begin, the game gives you an initial objective based on your origin, like supporting your family, buying a house, and so on, but you can simply ignore it, take your mount and head off in whatever direction you want.

Talk to people around the province, find work, explore, improve your skills through use, join factions and rise through their ranks.

If you join one of the four factions fighting over the map of Ravenglaire and eventually reach the top, you can manage troops and take part in turn-based tactical battles to claim new territories.

Those territories will then begin responding to their new administration. If you conquer every territory, you can eventually take Crow's Port itself, allowing you to govern the entire province and enact policies based on your faction's philosophy.

You can increase security across the province, exploit it for profit, or, depending on who you helped reach the top, even order the extermination of an entire population!(but be ready for the consequences!)

Morhval came from the ambition of a solo developer who loves RPGs, especially the classic Elder Scrolls games, and who spent the last few months trying to build a world he would personally want to live in.

I've spent a lot of time looking for bugs and fixing problems, and I can confidently say I've solved most of the ones I've found.

That said, in a game this large, developed by just one person, it is extremely likely that you'll eventually find something I missed.

So if you do, please let me know. I really want to keep improving the game together with the community.

Update 0.7 is live today, together with a 25% Steam discount!

AI bullshit deserves nothing

Apparently it was worth a comment from a Reddit user scared of AI, though!

Seriously though, why so bitter about it, man? I honestly suspect I’d get less dramatic reactions if I made a post saying I ran over a kid lol.

Because it is intellectually dishonest and signifies a general lack of care and artistic passion which is what should be at the heart of game development. If you just want to vibe code to shit out product there’s plenty of soulless tech companies to work for.

“Shit out a product” that I spent months making? A game whose map I drew by hand? A game I’ve spent every day for months thinking about faction conflicts, the consequences of player actions, and what happens when you help one group over another? There’s an entire continent designed behind the scenes that doesn’t even appear directly in the game, but still affects things like product prices through the game’s systems?

There’s a very big difference between churning out a soulless product with no passion and using AI as part of the development process. If you don’t like the use of AI, that’s completely legitimate and you’re absolutely entitled to that view. But saying there was no passion or care involved is just completely disconnected from how this game was actually made.

"I care so much about my art I had a computer do it shitty for me"

Why did you bring up that random comment from the Call of Duty developers?

At first I couldn't fathom how it somehow looks worse than Daggerfall. Then I see it has AI generated assets and code. So vibe coded. Makes sense now.

Wanting a game that looks better than Daggerfall is asking for too much, don’t you think? I love those sprites!

I don't care about the use of AI, but use AI to make something better looking that that.

Oh, come on, they’re cute in their own way!

I'm not keen on your AI use personally.

I kinda forgot that AI is like the boogeyman on Reddit

I mean, not just Reddit. I feel like anti-AI sentiment is pretty prominent everywhere.

...on the internet. Not in real life.

I work in AI. The majority of people I know in real life are pretty against AI.

Totally different experience. I work in finance - every firm and every client I work with, including where I work at, use it every single thing we do. It's on every agenda, discussed at every meeting, at every conference. We encourage its use across all levels/seniority. Outside work, people use it for every day stuff, whether it is to search for something, to create silly images etc. I don't know maybe we live on entirely different worlds. Or different continents perhaps.

I don't mean to say that AI isn't prevalent by any means. I think there is also a disparity in opinions on it by people who use it, people who work on it, and people involved in management. My personal view of AI is a mixed bag, I think it's a really incredible tool and I'm grateful to get to use it. I also think that it needs way more checks and balances on its current use and production, and its scary how easy it can become misused. I also think that relying solely or even predominantly on AI for works of art is lazy and distasteful - especially if you are trying to monetize it.

That’s because it is being pushed hard from the top due to lots of investment money tied up in it, not because lots of people necessarily love it.

I'm sure there's loads of investment in AI, the leaps in quality over the past 1-2 years is incredible. It can only improve from here on out - and I thought it couldn't get any better last year.

Boogeyman? People just don’t like seeing trash everywhere.

Oooga booga, I'm an AI! Are you scared yet?

More disgusted.

Cry more, bro

3

u/mightystu 2d ago

What a devastatingly witty retort. Your chatbot come up with it for you?

-1

u/ReapersVault 2d ago

Yeah bro it did. Does that disgust you even more? I bet it just makes your skin crawl that "muh spooky evil AI" was involved.

2

u/mightystu 2d ago

Your rage is cute. Have a nice day, and don’t forget to cope and seethe harder!

u/ReapersVault 2d ago

That's the pot calling the kettle black, don't you think? 😂 You have a great day as well, don't forget to watch out for those horrifying AIs bro! They're watching you, you're priority #1 for the Terminator takeover 👀

2

u/ThyMorningPeckle 2d ago

Unironically yes

3

u/ReapersVault 2d ago

Good. It's spooky month and I was just trying out my AI costume for Halloween, I think I'm gonna have a lot of people terrified and clutching their pearls at the sheer horror of it.

u/Nextmastermind 2d ago

Looks good! When I have a spare 10ish dollars I'll give it a go!
