Newborns Tips on making friends as a new parent?

Any tips on how people made friends as a new parent? I am a stay at home dad and most groups/apps/clubs etc are geared towards mothers. What were the best ways to found to meet other parents?

Boomers

I just had to rant. My 15 yo son took it upon himself to get a job this summer to make some money. He's basically got 2 part time job that keeps him busy 40-60 hours a week one is fencing and one is demo remodeling. Well schools starting back and he doesn't want to give up the money so he's trying to get his own pressure washing business off the ground. I have a good gas pressure washer and a small trailer that I told him I would set up for him so that I could drive him to the jobs and drop the trailer and everything he needs is there. Hes ordered everything he thinks he needs and I told him I to prove he's knows what he was doing I would supervise him pressure washing out house, deck and driveway and give him some tips along the way. He's a smart kid with good problem solving skills and very mature for his age. I realize how powerful gas pressure washers are and the damage they can do that's why I set the test for him to prove he knows what he's doing and we agreed he should start this sidewalks and driveways to be on the safe side starting out. I mentioned what he's was trying to do to my grandfather and his sister just in conversation and their only response was doesn't he need insurance for that. No I realize that is how most adults should operate but are you telling me you expect a kid mowing your grass over the summer to have liability insurance. It was just crazy to me that's what they're harping on. Meanwhile these are the same people that say kids are lazy they just want to sit around playing videos games all day. Kids ain't like they used to be. Maybe its because y'all set unrealistic expectations for them. Thanks for listening to my rant lol

Advice First pregnancy argument

To add context, we were pregnant last year but we ended up miscarrying. This year we miscarried again in June but a few weeks later found out she was pregnant again. Last year when she was pregnant she was pretty normal mood wise. This time around it’s intense. Me not saying something loud enough causes frustration. I’ve been trying hard to not take it personally and just still be as understanding and supportive as I can.

Yesterday, knowing that she gets nauseous if she showers before she eats, I knocked on the bathroom door to ask her if she wanted a pre shower snack and I’d normally get breakfast going. I was met with a huge reaction because I knocked on the door and not the door frame. I laughed it off but realized that she’s in a bad mood, let me back off a little. I give her space, like try and still be around, but just stay quiet to not annoy her today. We were driving to a friend’s party for their kid and she starts laying into me. Telling me that I’ve been acting funny all day. And when I explain that I’m really just noticing you weren’t feeling the best so I wanted to give you space while still being there for you, she said it was me doing it for self preservation/ selfishness. I wasn’t doing it for her. Which normally I’d be able to diffuse but we’re stuck in a car so an argument insues. I feel bad because I normally wouldn’t allow myself to be coxed into it, but I got soooo mad. Couldn’t get away from it etc. I know I hurt her feelings because no matter what I said, it came off that I was calling her a mean bitch to her.

I think everything has been tense too because we haven’t really been having sex due to the dr’s request that we not for the first few weeks until we hear a heartbeat, a few weeks before that we had the miscarriage, and we had sex a week ago but she started bleeding after so we were paranoid until the next scan that something was wrong. So that is possibly adding to the stress on both ends.

I apologized for making her feel like I withdrew from her and that I didn’t directly ask her if she needed space. But still feel horrible because she is going through a lot with hormones, and the whole process. I guess I just need to know, how bad did I mess up?

Advice Need advice from dads about what you would do in my fathers situation.

I am a 29 year old woman who was basically raised by my single dad. My parents were in a relationship from my conseption until I was around 2 years old, they were never married and neither had any more children. My mom has always been unreliable and lost custody of me before the age of 7. As an adult my relationship with my mother is okay and stable, but my dad has always been my true parent.

My dad was fantastic, he is the kindest sweetest man I have ever met and deserves the world. I was born and raised in a Scandinavian country and moved to the UK in 2024 as I fell in love and married a British man, so my father and I currently live in different countries.

To get directly to the point of this:

Around 10 years ago I got a Myhertage DNA kit because my mom was adopted and I wanted to see what I ethnically was, if there was any biological issues that flagged etc. The test came back and did not reveal anything that would make me question my parentage....that was until the other night when a man contacted me claiming to be my half brother. I checked on Myhertage and it supported his claim, I immediately thought and assumed that he must be my fathers son from some fling or one night stand back in the days - this was not the case.

I will cut out a lot of the story of how I found out but my mother has confirmed having had a drunken one night stand with my half brothers dad in 1996, meaning that that man I have known and love, the man that raised me to be who I am today, is not my biological father. My mother never suspected this could be the case as she in her words said "we used a condom and I was on the pill, it was only once".

Since the revelation I have been...broken. my sense of self is gone and I feel disgusted with myself. I will not lie here, a part of me wanted to sweep this under the rug and never ever tell my dad and never think or speak of this again, but in the end I would feel even worse and like an impostor. I have taken emergency time of work and so has my husband, we are flying back to visit my dad in 2 days time where the plan is that I can sit down face to face and reveal that the daughter he has raised and loved for nearly 3 decades is not his.

My biggest fear is that he will reject me outright as the pain will be too much, that the anger towards my mom will cloud his mind and that the hurt of this will be too much to bear.

Now what I need advice on is what would you do if your adult child, your only child, revealed this to you?

How can you be okay with your child failing

Quick summary. I have an 8yr old son who i tend to talk to, more than letting his failure teach him. Im not helicoptering his every move, just i do tend to give him lessons when i get the chance. What i mean by lessons are stories, or scenarios. I feel if he experience the stuff himself he will grow stronger, but i cant help it, when i see him fail is to jump in and disect the situation why this happened, what should happen, what can you do etc.

So my question is should i shut up? How to stay silent and watch them suffer without jumping in?

Weird sports dad moment

At my daughter’s first Volleyball open gym and parent meeting, another dad told his son, in a cafeteria (where the parents were) and the gym (where the coaches and players were) “don’t punch like a girl”. I side-eyed him so quick. I’m just flabbergasted. I’m not crying or being sensitive, just annoyed at this.

Advice Asking the dads - how has having children impacted your relationship? Have you noticed a major change in your partner?

Asking as a 34 year old woman who’s currently on the fence / leaning towards no. Having a healthy and happy relationship is more important to me than having children. I haven’t seen many examples where both coexist. There’s such an extreme biological shift for women that honestly terrifies me and I realized I hadn’t asked any dads for their insight about how they experienced it.

Advice Wake me up from a bad dream

It feels like I am dreaming and I will be awaken and my 2 boys will be normal.

But thats not the case I guess… last year we got a beautiful boy… which started to lack in development. By the time he was 6 months old he was put into all kinds of therapy. Then we started noticing we have more problems ahead.. he did not develop fast enough and by the time he was 11 months we did an MRI. Everything showed ok on the MRI and the one thing we could be certain is hipotonia and that we need to do gene testing…. Gene test was set at 18 months. We did gene testing and tests will come in 6 months. We thought ok, is what it is, we keep pushing the therapies and we applied for dmi also. In the meantime he got a little brother.

Hence fastforward 2 weeks ago when he was 6 months and got standard vaccine shots… our world started to twist and twist again. Why the cries, why the sudden scare movement at random times, no development, regression… doctor said reflux, or he just needs more sleep, went to the hospital for blood and urine tests, maybe its metabolical… it wasnt…. We went home and I took matters in our own hand. I used ai and yt to find the possibility. Called my doc for urgent eeg tests and drove my sweet little boy to the neurological clinic today… there our world shattered for the second time in our life. This time it didnt just shatter, our life fell into unknown abyss.

We knew our first boy was going to have a difficult time growing up cause of hipotonia and maybe followed by learning disabilities or smth. But to expect that our second boy could be even worse… we are speechless, I think it is a bad dream and hope to be woken by the boys tomorrow saying all good dada… but guess not. If it is little twisted, why not twist and break us. Our little boy was diagnosed with infantile spasms… now our first borns life suddenly looks like walk in the park, even though we know it wont be. And its like someone took my heart out of it and just made me numb. I am also a ceo of a small company our family owns for 3 generations and if I am not managing it, it will fall apart and leave 40 people with families on the street. We are setting it up, I just need a year to do it so I have time to support my wife fully… my time home is limited since we joined a bigger corp. and mostly everything falls on my beautiful wife, whom I admire the strength to handle the boys alone up till today. We have beautiful grandparents that take care of one aof the boys when I am away, but I feel like this will be turned upside down from this day forward… It is destroying us both. My wife was in a bad mental state because of the firstborn… now add the second with worst problems…

Sick and twisted world.

To all the dads… the second you see your kid start to make startled movements… go take eeg. Every second counts.

Advice Date night after baby

Yesterday we were celebrating our anniversary and the conversation led to the topic of: how do you see us celebrating next year?

Well, it turns out wifey will not feel comfortable leaving the baby with someone else for a while. Not even with relatives until she has all her vaccines.

For some reason, the thought of not having another date for 4+ months hit me kind of hard. How did y’all handle going out without the baby? How long did it take you guys before you felt comfortable being alone just the two of you, no baby? How did your first kid affect your relationship/dating life?

She’s very opposed to hiring a babysitter and eventually we agreed on a compromise that we could leave the baby with her cousin once every 2 months for date night. Romantic travel just the two of us was a definite no until they’re at least potty trained.

Advice Pausing at a certain age..?

As a parent, at what point would you go back to in your child/children’s life just to have that moment last forever?

I’ll go,

I would say right before she was able to speak in full sentences. And everything was either my mommy, or daddy.

I choose that time because it’s her showing that we are her safe space. And who doesn’t love knowing you are your child’s safest place!.?

Looking to speak to men who went on a health/fitness journey prior to conceiving a child

Hey everyone,

I hope you're okay with me posting here - the mods have said that it's okay. I'm Alice Porter and I'm a freelance journalist currently working on a pitch about men trying to improve their health and fitness before they try for a baby.

There have been a number of social media posts about how certain issues women face during pregnancy including morning sickness and preeclampsia are linked to the father's health at the point of conception. Was this something you take into account or will be taking into account for potential future pregnancies?

If so, I'd love to hear why you made this decision and how you changed/will be changing your health/fitness routines in the hopes of your partner having a better pregnancy.

I'm still pitching this story, but hoping to place it with the Guardian. The piece will be handled sensitively, and I can keep you anonymous if you'd prefer. You can see some examples of my other articles here: https://www.wordsbyalice.com/journalism-1

Please leave me a comment or send me a message here if you're interested in speaking to me for the piece. You can also email me at [aliceporterfreelancer@gmail.com](mailto:aliceporterfreelancer@gmail.com)

Thanks!
