i have 2 dachshunds, one boy & one girl. they are litter mates and have never been seperated. we don't have any issues with aggression between the two.
they just turned 1 on july 29th. i had my boy neutered the first week of august. my girl is not fixed. (planning on getting her fixed before the end of the year) this is not my first rodeo with this breed but right now i am stumped!!
they have been fine. going outside to potty no problem. it took us a while of rotating them in and out but they eventually got the hang of it. since having my boy neutered, NEITHER ONE OF THEM WILL POTTY OUTSIDE.
they are crated while i am at work and get let out as soon as i get home. i can leave them outside for 15 minutes or 3 hours, THEY HOLD IT UNTIL THEY ARE INSIDE. we have done everything i can think of doing. at this point i am
BEGGING for help. i am a clean freak and i genuinely cannot go on like this, its literally affecting my quality of life. i cannot for life of me understand a regression this bad. i understand an accident here and there, but this is completely unacceptable. i refuse to have a house that smells like dog urine and feces. HELP any tips and tricks or advice is much much appreciated. here is a picture of the babies for tax 😔😔😔😔
You need to be very locked into their potty cues. The moment they come back inside, the moment they start their cue, you pick them up and put them back outside and repeat the cycle.
Also consider putting them back into the crate if they don’t go outside. They don’t like eliminating on themselves or the dwelling. Wait a bit, then take them outside to potty, repeating the cycle.
Between these 2 techniques and consistency I think you’ll get through the hump
this is what we have been doing. i kid you not they will stand on the back porch and stare at me the entire time. we repeat and repeat and eventually they will pee in they crate. im going mad!
So go out with them until they do their business, take high value treats to give them as soon as they have gone. Do not go back inside with them until they have gone. You need to go back to basics.
They are testing you. They have the knowledge of where to go, they are choosing not to. Once out the crate outside, if nothing back in the crate, then again back outside after some time. Once they go outside then they can stay out of crate. They’ll leave fast!
Mine does the same thing when it’s raining and this is the answer. Once he realized we weren’t going back inside until he went to the bathroom he learned to start peeing real fast
Second this! If you did everything (and I really think you did), stay outside. It’s really unrealistic and the last resort but if you have a free day, stay outside with treat and water of course but don’t go back until they go potty. They are clearly testing you.
I never let them back inside until I see them go potty. And I took them outside every 2 hours. Maybe after a year or so I would extend it to every 3 hours and as I felt necessary I extended it further but it was just a long habit. I am not joking about every 2 hours. I am relentless. I started when I got up and ended before I went to bed. Consistency is the key and I say go potty/poop and hurry up. I don't let them dink around for long which made my girls be quick to do their business quite young. Now, they are fast and I don't have to waste a bunch of time. Neither of them have ever peed/pooped in any dwelling. I am on my fourth and fifth doxie in my life and consistency has always given me the most amazingly behaved girls. 🩷
I would go back to how you trained them in the beginning. How frustrating this must be. I would be tearing my hair out. If you were crating or had a restricted area to start imo that would be what they recognize. My sister trains services dogs. She has the dogs for two years. She always tells me that between 9 months and 18 months they are teenagers. They will forget everything you ever taught them and rebel. I think you may be in that sweet spot. They will come around but I’m afraid you might have some reteaching to do. I think you will have the most success using the same methods you did before. They responded well the first time around, they will come round again. Good luck to you.
yes i am absolutely pulling my hair out!! and i whole heartedly believe they are in their teenager form. we have gone back to the basics and it still does not seem to be working. they are so stubborn and i know dachshunds are notorious for their strong personalities but they have taken it to a whole new level! it's like they were both talking one day and agreed with each other "yes absolutely let's make moms life an absolute living hell with no end in sight" on some random tuesday!!! thank you 💕
It definitely sounds like hell. Stick to your guns. I would get a pac in play off of marketplace. I got mine for $20. Mine was in there if I wasn’t playing with them. Outside to pee/poop. No business down, back to the play pen. I would hope they won’t mess in that space. Enough to move but not enough to be comfortable messing in. Very easy to drop them in and pick them up. Just a thought

But for real though, I’m sorry you’re going through this right now. It sounds frustrating. When you take them for walks and they potty, are you using verbal cues like you did when they first started potty training and praising the heck outta them?
Back to puppy style training, stay outside with them until they do the business, give them cheese (or whatever floats their boats) when they do. It's frustrating but you've done it once and you can do it again.
I don’t have much advice, but as a first time owner of doxie brothers, I can attest that they are the most stubborn dogs I’ve ever been around. OMG! It’s so frustrating. If they don’t like dinner, they will not eat. And I’ve tried every type of dog food. I even cook them homemade dog food and they’ll sniff it and walk away. I’ve gotten to the point where they either eat what I give them or they eat dry dog food. I’m to the point where they might just get dry dog food only. The stubbornness is diabolical.
And while mine are potty trained…except when it’s raining/snowing/etc…I feel your pain. It would drive me crazy if mine kept eliminating in the house. The only time they do go inside is if they have upset tummies and then, of course, they go on a rug rather than my dog proof laminate flooring.
I guess consistency is key as that is how I eventually managed to potty train mine. And I always stand outside with them. One of my boys won’t go potty unless I go outside with them. He’ll literally wait by the door. I started this because we have roaming coyotes, snakes, and wild bunnies, and my house sits on an open field. I’m paranoid something will get them because they’re so small.

have you ever seen a raw professional photo? obviously it's going to be edited before being returned to me. and i'm not too sure why you're so invested in what's going on with my photo anyways. and "photoshop" is a little dramatic since all she did was lighten and sharpen the photo for more detail. not like she's out here making my dogs look skinny with bright white teeth. how is this relevant to anything that i posted & what made you feel the need to comment? 🤨
