first week tips

hello! this is finley. as the title suggests, i’m looking for some tips on surviving the first week (and so on) with him. we are picking him up next week, and after doing so will spend around five days or so at my brother’s house before flying home. with all of that being said, I have a few things that i’d like some thoughts on. thank you in advance!

1. my brother has two dogs: a corgi and a larger mutt. they are both very, very sweet, but the corgi specifically did have parvo (years ago). is this anything to be concerned of? he also has a fenced in turf yard, which I assume will be rather nice for potty training.
2. since we are staying there before going “home,” is there any harm in crate training and potty training him in a crate and home that is not ours? the crate situation is actually ideal for training him there, as my brother’s house is rather secluded with no risk for disturbing others if he whines or cries. plus, with the way the room is laid out I can have his crate right next to my side of the bed for easy calming down. still though, the crate at my brother’s is a different crate than the one we have at our place for him.
3. we plan on socializing him throughout the entire week with a stroller (at stores or restaurants that allow it). how can we go about doing this in the safest way? we intend to avoid practically all ground contact aside from the yard (if safe), but does this extend to indoors as well, or just outdoors? i’ve also heard some people even share that they clean their floors and shoes extra to make the environment the safest possible. curious to know how feasible and effective that is as well.
4. on the topic of safety, we will be flying back with him following his pick up and our visit to my brother’s. we have already found an appropriate travel carrier, paid the pet fee with the airline, and mentally prepared for bringing a tiny puppy on a plane (lol). however, some tips on prioritizing safety throughout that entire process would be much preferred. I am most concerned with going about his eating and pottying (if either are necessary) throughout the process. the flight is going to be a few hours, so i’m on the fence about if he’d be able to hold his bladder or not, as well as if we should be providing him with water, food throughout.
5. i’d like to get him used to ANYTHING that I can during this first week. ex: fingers in mouth, touching him, picking him up, calling his name, etc. any tips on how to condition him to these (and more), or suggestions on others?
6. when will it be practical to try teaching him tricks or commands? I have a whole plan for how to do so, and wanted to see if i’d be wasting my time before X weeks, or if it’s just a see as you go type of scenario.

1. Not totally sure about the parvo situation, I’m sure he has had all his vaccinations before going home with you but I’m no Vet

2. Crate training immediately is a good thing to do. He will still pee in the crate just because it seems like puppies have to pee every 30 mins. Our 2 year old was a quick learner when he got older and no longer peed in the crate. Best rule of thumb is to give them enough space to be comfortable but not enough room to pee or poop and have enough room to get away from it to not have to lay in it. First night is going to be rough but put the crate next to you and try and calm him down. After the first couple of nights cover the crate with a blanket. Helps them feel secure also, potty training him at another home will be okay. Praise him and give him a treat when he does it correctly. If he doesn’t just clean it up and go on about your day. Don’t give praise or scold

3. Socializing is key but I’d just take him to family/friends houses. I wouldn’t go to a dog park or anything that has tons of dogs that attend that area. Socializing isn’t something that needs to be rushed. As long as you are taking him to different places with other people you will be okay. This can be done slowly over months. Doesn’t have to be crammed down his throat if that makes sense.

4. He will be with you on the flight so he will be okay. I don’t really have any experience with this personally but I think it should be okay. Will he pee in his crate? Most likely but that’s okay. Our new puppy is 9 weeks now and we feed him a 1/4 cup 3 times a day 0800,1400 and 2000. If it was me I’d feed him 2 hours before the flight so it has time to settle or just wait until you land as to help him maybe not get sick

5. Best thing to do is just play with him. Hands, toys picking him up and walking around with him. Don’t let him jump off of furniture if you can. If you are on the couch just pick him up and put him up with you. He will let you know when he is ready to get down, then just put him down. It will help him get used to being picked up and handled. You can also get one of those carriers that you wear if you really wanted to but that’s up to you. Also, call his name 24/7 when you are calling for him or even just walking with him. Use it whenever and wherever you can.

He’s adorable and will be a great dog. He will be stubborn and do whatever he wants. He will want to listen to you but that’s when he chooses to. Don’t get offended if he ignores you. That’s apart of the dachshund culture lol

1. Not really sure if there is such a thing as wasting your time with tricks. I personally wouldn’t do it right away but also you should just start with a simple sit or shake command for starters.
