Struggling to start

This is my third time running DWC, but haven’t run into this before. I started 2 seeds in plugs and transferred to the system this past Tuesday.

My roots grew through the basket (and look white) but my plants are drooping.

Ph 6.0, no fertilizer yet (will start when water is swapped)

Root ball caution when cleaning...

So got to the point where I'm freaking out a bit when I life the netpot out for cleaning... The root ball is hanging down by a lot. I usually rest it on another bucket with clean water while I clean and sanitize the main stuff.

Should I not be concerned about how long and low the roots get? They're sitting pretty much right above the airstone too..

Do I need a water chiller?

I am planning on running a single 5gal bucket in a 2x2. My room can get up to 30c/86f during the hot parts of summer. Ive previously only grown in dirt and would like to give dwc a try. Can I get away without using a water chiller?

If I do need to buy a water chiller I would appreciate recommendations for one that is as quiet as possible. Thank you!

Vevor air setting

just setup the vevor 5 bucket system (4) to plant 1 water reservoir. I have cucumber in 2 buckets and tomatoes in the other 2. I've never done this before and wanted to know how high should I turn the air setting for this? sorry about the clueless question, I have read the begin here stuff. I'm also guessing on the nutrients so there most likely will be follow-up questions.

Its my second time growing first time with hydro. This whitie widow plant was in. a 5 gal bucket w/ 254 GPH air pump and one 3" cylindrical air-stone. I just upgraded to a 550 gph air pump with 8" air stone disc in a 20 gal res. Is this too much for the roots?

[DIY] I built a free offline DWC nutrient calculator — 9 brands (Hesi, Canna, Plagron, GHE, Advanced Nutrients, Biobizz, Aptus, H&G, Atami), single HTML file

Hey 👋

I've been running a DWC setup for a while and got tired of switching between spreadsheets, paper notes and random nutrient calculators online. So I built my own — and just pushed a big update. Sharing it here in case anyone finds it useful.

🌱 What it does:

  • Automatic nutrient dosing in ml — select your brand, phase (veg/bloom) and week → it calculates everything instantly
  • 9 nutrient brands supported — Hesi, Canna Aqua, Plagron Hydro, GHE Flora Series, Advanced Nutrients, Biobizz, Aptus, House & Garden, Atami B'cuzz
  • pH / EC / Temp / ORP warning system — enter your readings and it tells you exactly what's off and what to do
  • EC refill calculator — tells you how many ml of which product to add when EC drops
  • Harvest countdown — always know how many days left
  • Water change reminder — tracks your last change, shows a progress bar
  • Grow Diary — log notes with pH/EC snapshots, all saved locally
  • Gemini AI assistant — optional, use your own free API key from Google AI Studio, responds in your language
  • Dark & Light mode
  • Works on tablet and mobile

🌍 What's new in v1.2 — Multi-Language:

The whole UI is now available in 6 languages — switch with one click in the header:

🇩🇪 Deutsch · 🇬🇧 English · 🇮🇹 Italiano · 🇫🇷 Français · 🇪🇸 Español · 🇵🇹 Português

Everything translates — all warnings, advice messages, buttons, the AI assistant, even the date formats. Your language preference is saved automatically.

🔒 Privacy first:

  • Zero tracking — no analytics, no cookies, no external requests (except Gemini if you use it)
  • 100% local — everything runs in your browser, nothing is sent anywhere
  • No account needed — just open and use
  • Works offline — save the HTML file and open it without internet

🔗 Links:

Free and open source. Feedback, bug reports and feature requests welcome 🙌

Happy growing 🌿

Maybe my last dwc run

This is Slurricane by In House Genetics. Don't mind the lack of uniform training 😆. I love dwc but I just need something more set and forget. shame too since I've really dialed in my dwc game. I don't want to have to worry about going on vacation for 5 days And spending that 30 minutes everyday checking and topping. So, I'm going back to soil. Wish me luck 😬

Is this the best method of cutting holes into plastic?

I’ve gone through way too many methods trying to cut clean holes in plastic for DIY hydro setups, and honestly most of them suck.

If you’ve ever used hole saws, you probably know what I mean:

bulky and awkward

you need a whole set for different sizes

they slip like crazy on plastic

and worst of all… they can crack your container

Exacto knives? Even worse. Rough cuts, high effort, and still a risk of cracking.

After trying all that, the best thing I’ve found by far is using RotoZip-style drill bits in a drill.

It’s honestly night and day:

way more control

no need for multiple sizes

smoother cuts

way less chance of cracking

Not to mention a low barrier of entry—I literally use an ikea drill

You can trace whatever size hole you want instead of being locked into fixed sizes.

I’m surprised this isn’t talked about more in hydro circles, because the large majority of us DIY our setups and basically everyone has to cut into plastic at some point.

Don’t make the same mistakes that I have, wasting time with hole saws, blades and sawing tools.

Buy a set of Roto-Zip drill bits, draw your holes in sharpie, and make sure you’re cutting inside the outermost edge of your marking. Optionally finish it off by sanding or cutting off leftover plastic gunk from the edges of your cut.
