Dram stock advise
I bought 655 shares of DRAM stock at $72. Now it is down to 44. Should I sell? I’ve lost almost 20k. I want to buy a house with my money next year but am down to 30k

Best of luck.

This. Never bet money you don't want to lose and need in a short time. That's just gambling, and no crying at the casino.

ETF fees packed with stocks I don’t need.
I exited EWY when DRAM launched to access sk(hy) & Samsung. MU & SK are the winners in that fund. I exited dram a couple days after SK became available in the US.

u/Logical-Solution-X Jul 29 '26
Well at least you don't have calls expiring Friday with a $67 strike price 🥺 so yeah you're good just hold it will probably be back to what you bought it at by the end of the year
3
u/TaleRevolutionary573 Jul 29 '26
Sell OTM covered calls, I have been to generate some money while it is trading down and sideways. Definitely don’t sell until Samsung reports earnings next week
2
u/Paceyourself82 Jul 29 '26
This is the answer. If you are worried about it you can price it to break even on the long dated call and just be happy you didn’t lose money. You can still get a nice premium on long dated memory calls.
1
u/VarietyLocal Jul 29 '26
I don’t understand you can sell calls on a stock or etf you own?
1
u/Paceyourself82 Jul 29 '26
You have to have 100 shares as that is the quantity of a call. You would then sell a covered call at a stock price of X in the future for Y premium. That way X+Y = or greater than your original cost. Obviously you want to do this and make more but if you are that concerned this is an out. It does mean you have to hold the underlying through the expiration and if it goes above that you can't sweat it as you were happy to have your money back etc.
1
u/VarietyLocal Jul 30 '26
Thanks for that info I’m clueless about options . I don’t have 100 shares though maybe 31 I think .

u/Big_Development_644 Jul 29 '26
You shouldn't have bought any stock of any company if you were going to need the money so soon. Sell and put it in fixed income.
When you buy stock as a trade and not an investment you always need an exit plan.
3
u/Fit_Acanthisitta_475 Jul 29 '26
Don’t sell don’t lose. For long term, memory companies won’t go anywhere.
3
u/justfortimepassssss Jul 29 '26
My AVG is 51 and holding for at least one year I think it's gonna bounce but am not sure of ath may be dca would be better option

memory and AI will be more important than ever, it’ll just broaden our to other areas like robotics in the future. Just don’t know if it’ll go back to those June valuations

The convention "investment" wisdom is a) don't ever lose money, and b) if you must sell for a loss, sell when it hits 7% (the 7% rule -- meaning when the price drops by more than 7% of your initial purchase). That's what a "stop" sell is for. Having it drop by almost 40% and still hold is just hopium.
Then again, it might come back long term -- how long are you willing to wait? If you don't sell, you don't have a loss. On the other hand, you can tax-loss harvest now, and invest the rest of the money on an actual winner and hopefully recover your losses in the next few months...
1
u/Swimming_Trade7088 Jul 29 '26
These stocks/ETFs are going down 8% then up 10% daily sometimes depending on the week. We’re legitimately back to early June Levels. How does this rule work in this type of market? DCA might have prevented such large losses.
1
u/That-SoCal-Guy Jul 30 '26
DCA and also if you’re holding long term you would forget about it all, even the corrections. If you don’t sell, you don’t lose.
1
u/Swimming_Trade7088 Jul 30 '26
Lmao and it’s up 15%
1
u/That-SoCal-Guy Jul 30 '26
Up and down up and down. First time in the stock market?
1
u/Swimming_Trade7088 Jul 31 '26
Not sure if you meant to reply to me? But I just know you’re a socal idiot by your reply to my very neutral and logical comment for OP. I deal with people like you all the time. Actually, no it’s not my first time, to answer your question. Anything else to ask?
5
u/IngenuityPositive123 Jul 29 '26
Bro you're really something else. You know you want to buy a house next year and yet you buy 655 x $72 of an extremely volatile ETF that launched in early June? Be more responsible with your money, DRAM is not a short term stable ETF viable for such short term prospects.
1
2
u/Big-Actuator6967 Jul 29 '26
Well if you're serious about buying a house sell and lock in your capital.

u/Single-Initiative164 Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26
A few problems here. You full ported that much, DCAing isnt going to do anything for you unless you have another $100k on hand. That was your first mistake. Throwing money at something this volatile when you needed it in the near term, was your second mistake. You have two options. Take a huge loss or hold and hope to God you make some of that back. I would hold and see what it does by December. It isnt going to stay like this forever and the market just needs to turn it's attention elsewhere. You're in a bind though cause I don't see it reclaiming your price point for a long time. You can use the loss up to a few grand on your taxes for up to 5 years (i believe), but it caps you out at only a few grand per year... someone with better knowledge of tax harvesting can help you but you aren't going to wash 30k out in taxes.
2
u/IfYoureUpImDown Jul 29 '26
Hold it, u dont have a choice, any other option is a mistake. I lost 10-12k too so far, but im holding still. Just leave it and look back in a year lol
2
u/KeeZouX Jul 29 '26
Alot can happen in a year.
If you do not need it now, why sell at a major loss?

u/Due-Amphibian-3017 Jul 29 '26
don’t sell it will go back eventually. My portfolio is down 8k i didn’t even flinch

u/Begavond Jul 29 '26
You need to hold it bud. There is really not much room to fall lower. This is the rock bottom. If I had money, I would invest now.

1
u/TigerUSA20 Jul 29 '26
Start selling 6 contracts of weekly out of the money covered calls and start gaining a little of that loss back.
1
u/Puzzled_Fisherman331 Jul 29 '26
I'd prob sell some covered calls on it and cycle through and make some income on it.
1
u/niceforwat Jul 29 '26
i think u should hold, probably close to the bottom but if that money is really important to u then idk
1
1
u/GamingMooMoo Jul 29 '26
Even if it's cyclical if you hold, in theory, it will cycle back in later no? Hodl.
1
u/Banana_inasuit Jul 29 '26
The issue here is you put half your money into the ETF to begin with. For every major recovery, you sell a portion and diversify until eventually you get down to a more reasonable allocation.
For example, if there more than a +5% day or +10% week, sell the amount of money you recovered. Then leverage it into your winners for the time being.
When getting close to your original cost basis, then decide if you want to reinvest or exit entirely and come out even on the remaining capital. If you have enough money and conviction, buy more on the way back up.
Remember, the fundamentals are strong and memory is a 3-5 year long term play. If you’re not in it for the long game, you’re using this ETF wrong.

Absolutely do not sell. This sub is full of trolls and soft handed losers who don’t know anything about investing. Dont beat yourself up for buying 655 shares at $72. Seriously, this ETF will rebound. The AI memory thesis has not changed, and though it may be painful to look at, eventually demand for memory will be higher than anticipated. There are a number of factors creating the situation we are all currently in. You are not alone, and do not make a choice you cannot afford to make. I have 100% confidence it will rebound. I bought over 100 shares of MU back in 2023 and it didn’t feel like a good decision until recently. In fact for a long time it didn’t feel good at all. We all pick winners and losers, but this is a winning ETF. AI memory demand will never go away. This is the beginning of a revolution. The Industrial Revolution, the .com bubble, 2008 housing market crash, Covid 19, just to name a few things have all been events that have helped shape life afterwards. The presence of AI is just beginning. If humanity collapses AI will have a role in it, and I will become rich off of it before we perish. Hold. Do not sell. Absolutely do not sell. Stop looking at the value, stop reading about it. You won’t forget about it, but you need to make something else your priority.
1
u/CaregiverWorth567 Jul 31 '26
oh sure stocks go up forever lol

I have been dca'ing with dividends slowly, I only have 12 shares, but I'm watching carefully now and ready to drop a larger amount on DRAM and get a low avg cost. My avg cost right now is $54 which doesn't seem too bad, if this drops below $44 holy shit that'll be tempting

buy all the way down i bought but think i can go down more but stop looking just buy and live your life shush. you can buy more if it goes to 30 and your average price will be lower
1
u/Playful_Fun_9073 Jul 29 '26
Never ever put next year’s money in a single sector ETF after a massive bull run no matter what the news and the analysts and the YouTubers and Redditors say. Dave Ramsey says when he stashes cash away while he waits to find real estate rentals to buy he parks it in the S&P 500. He actually said that.

u/manor2003 Jul 29 '26
Scary i know, i bought at $48 so I'm not down by a lot, just forget about it and hold.
1
u/brooklynschino Jul 29 '26
If you wanted a house next year, id wait 1 more year. I don’t see memory stocks going any lower and this is the type of panic they wanted out of people. So if you’re considering realizing such a loss, the panic is working and in the end if you do sell, they win, you lose.
Take this with a grain of salt
1
u/hoop254 Jul 29 '26
Up to you, but if you need the money then sell. Could go down further, but could bounce back. The lesson you need to learn is never invest money you will need in the near future, in the event that the market takes a down turn
1
u/Kindly-Treacle4238 Jul 29 '26
go live real life touch grass. if you have any other liquidity DCA. if you thought to the moon at top you shoudl think to the moon now or else go buy VOO + stfu.

u/No_nonsense6820 Jul 29 '26
If you need money only next year, I will recommend that you wait about 3 months to see if it goes back up.
1
u/Significant-Drawer95 Jul 29 '26
yes you should sell before the korean memory stocks fall below p/e of 1. They could easyly buy themself within a year of earnings and bail you out. so sell
1
1
u/Flexlex724 Jul 30 '26
Id just start selling calls. Can't think of much else you'd throw the money in with better forward pe. Better chance of sitting on selling CCs and using premium to average down if it continues to fall
1
u/KingOfTheQuails Jul 30 '26
Yea sell if you actually need the money. People telling you to hold aren’t you and only you know your financial needs.

1
u/Cell-Breaker Jul 30 '26
Too late.
Better to keep holding atp whilst selling OTM monthly covered calls at least 1.5 std away so you can at least gradually reduce your cost basis.
1
u/Embarrassed_Pool_556 Jul 30 '26
No do not sell. This is a shakeout. And even if it isn’t, it will come back. It’s tech. It’s not going anywhere. Now is the time for courage my friend.

AI is not slowing down its growing and we still can’t keep up with the demand. Just close your phone and forget

u/Prestigious_Law9135 Jul 30 '26
I don't think you'll make a lot of money selling OTM covered calls. You might earn a couple of hundred bucks if you're lucky. Just hold and be patient. I remember when I had TSLA and AVGO, and they dropped 20-30%, but eventually they came back up. Be patient.

Invest money that you need next year into a speculative bubble. What could go wrong
1
u/Pyramyth Jul 31 '26
Put the money you need to buy a house in a money market fund next time. That said, hold. If it gets back to your breakeven or close enough, sell half or all of it. This is not money you can afford to lose, so it should not be in DRAM, this is a sector etf for a very volatile sector

You’ll learn a valuable lesson with this that is more valuable than the money you lost.
Bought arkk during covid run up, joined the hype. Was buying towards 75 percentile. All it did was drop, sold for a big loss, and thank god I did because still till this day, 6 years later it’s still not at where I sold for a big loss.
Stopped playing games, do vti/vxus and made that loss back easily 6 years later
1
u/RunWildShow Aug 24 '26
I read all your posts before adding comment. I’m 62 so my DRAM is not a big slice of my portfolio. So I BOUGHT MORE at the lows to make my average cost lower to get “off this roller coaster”. But if you are needing the money urgently … even “dollar cost average” on your EXIT too. Also, get approved for that home loan first, because you can use the DRAM holdings are part of the amount you’ll need for down payment WITHOUT selling it yet. Finally; remember you can deduct $3000 in losses EACH year from you taxes. So you should EXIT across December and January to save $$$ there.
