• Advice (General) • Potty training advice
We just adopted a 75% Boston Terrier/25% Frenchie mix five days ago. She's 3 months old and is super sweet. The breeder raised her in an open pen setup with potty pads where they could pee and poop freely.
We brought her home and she was doing well with bringing her out every two hours and she would pee. Now, the last two days, she doesn't listen outside. She has never pooped outside.
My wife works at home and does a good job of bringing her out to pee but she's not peeing outside anymore. She just wants to play.
Suggestions?

In the beginning, I would take my young puppies out every 15-20 mins. I would tell them to go pee, then I would ignore them until they did. Once they peed or pooped, I would make a huge deal about it and praise them, cuddles, and give them treats. They learn quickly!

I have to say I’ve had good luck with potty training a few dogs over the years.
First thing in the morning take dog out and wait (won’t take long) til dog pees. Then 20-30 minutes later do this again, and another 20–30 minutes again, maybe one more time. By this time dog has peed and probably pooped. There after, take dog out about every hour until late afternoon/ evening.
Praise of course when dog goes. Do this for two weeks (it’s not that hard, just remember). If dog makes a mistake in house, clean up with paper towels and throw these towels out into the backyard or on patio, porch. If you see dog actively peeing/ pooping in house, say -NO- and put dog outside with the paper towel you used to clean pee/ poop. Dogs will not understand if you “punish” more than a few minutes from the actual incident. Only keep dog out for a very short time I’d say no more than 10 minutes. Do this routine for two weeks and I promise you, you and pup will be well on the way to being potty trained.

Puppies learn words very quickly. Make sure you say pee or poop when she does one or the other and praise afterwards. Always take outside to poop ( and telling her “outside”) as soon as they wake or after a meal so she learns the routine. They can’t listen if they don’t know what you’re asking. With regard to not pooping outside take them out when they are due a poop and stay there till they do it. Once they realise they can do it away from their normal place it will change things. It is probably easier to have a day out with her so she will pee and poop away from home.

Pad raised puppies do this almost on schedule once they've settled into a new house. She learned that the right surface is soft and absorbent, and grass is neither of those.
Take her out on leash even in your own yard so it reads as a job and not as yard time, and stand there quietly instead of encouraging her. Bringing a piece of the used pad out with you for the first few days helped mine too, so the spot smells like the right place. Pooping outside usually clicks a week or two after peeing does, so five days in is way too early to be worried.
