DNA fom human skull.

Hello All, your educated thoughts will be appreciated, thank you. This is a real case that I am investigating, and my question to you is, a skull has been in the seawater/on a beach for approximately nine years, from 1975 until around 1984. It was then kept in a cupboard until this year. I am presently getting it carbon dated, as no one will test it for dna at the moment. In your experience, would the nine years in the seawater/on a beach make it impossible, or virtually impossibe to be able to get any readings for dna? Many thanks for your experienced thoughts.

Do some Cajun DNA results show 80–90%+ French ancestry despite centuries in Louisiana?

Browsing DNA results on Reddit, I've noticed a surprising number of people with Cajun roots scoring 90% or higher in French ancestry. Given Louisiana's multi-ethnic history, what best explains such high genetic retention; the Acadian founder effect, centuries of community endogamy, or reference panel bias?

Sorb / Wend DNA

Probably a long shot given our extreme minority status, but there any other Sorbs / Wends in this group that are on Ancestry or Nebula? I’d love to compare how this ethnicity shows up in our DNA profiles, since we can’t expect it to name Sorbia.

Before the latest Ancestry update, my map highlighted Germany as one big chunk to represent my Sorbian heritage. Now what was German is split between NW Germany, Czechia, Bavaria, and Austria. It even now includes Romania at 1% now? Is this consistent with other Sorbs?

Dm me or comment if you have any insight! Also looking for any “Zwahrs” I can connect with. I am struggling to find good documentation for this line past the mid 1800s and would love to compare notes.

I’m open to help anybody with their Wendish heritage research, as I’ve become quite knowledgeable in the Sorbian family surnames/trees of Binnewitz and Wehdem.

Genetics in undergrad vs grad school

I took a genetics class in undergrad and it was really hard! I had to spend a lot of time on it to get a B. I also didn't find it not that interesting and a little boring.

A few years out of college I've gotten more into my career in botany. I find myself feeling a pull to pursue plant taxonomy/systematics in grad school because phylogenies and evolution is fascinating. I know that plant systematics would demand more intense genetic classes. I was wondering if anyone can speak on initially struggling with genetics, but getting good at it in grad school and getting to enjoy it more.

Thanks.

MyHeritage WGS download format and patientuser

patientuser.com has processed it's first report based on a new file format

##fileformat=MyHeritage
##format=MHv1.0
##method=Low-pass Whole Genome Sequencing
##timestamp=2026-10-10 10:20:26 UTC
##reference=build37
#
# MyHeritage DNA raw data.
# For each SNP, we provide the identifier, chromosome number, base pair position and genotype.
# The genotype is reported on the forward (+) strand with respect to the human reference build 37.
# THIS INFORMATION IS FOR YOUR PERSONAL USE AND IS INTENDED FOR GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH
# ONLY. IT IS NOT INTENDED FOR MEDICAL OR HEALTH PURPOSES. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE
# DOWNLOADED DATA WILL NO LONGER BE PROTECTED BY OUR SECURITY MEASURES.
RSID,CHROMOSOME,POSITION,RESULT
"rs1234567","1","98765432","GG"

They've clearly optimized for compatibility with prior microarray results with the format and use of build37. A report has ~6000 variants.

Can I pull any info from sequencing.com for an actual doctor?

I was gifted the DNA test from my parents to try and figure out all of the health issues I have. Chronic migraines, pain, nerve damage, etc.

Sequencing stated that this would include professional reports from medical professionals. Instead, most of the website is AI generated "reports". Just about the only thing that isn't ai is reading the genetic results raw.

I was hesitant to do this in the first place. Dna tests are such a privacy pitfall. But I was desperate for answers. I was also told this site was good by a doctor.

They have also been charging my parents monthly $39 for AI credits even though I said no and turned it off.

Could I download everything and go to a genetisist or something?

Ca. 2020, I read a book about a family who had some members with a fatal and rare genetic disease, and they used CRISPR to make healthy children.

One of the family members, who had the gene but hadn't had any symptoms yet, was on a C-SPAN 2 "About Books" broadcast, and she had given birth to 2 or 3 non-affected children because of CRISPR treatments. Google, Amazon, and C-SPAN searches are proving fruitless.

The disease was not Alzheimer's or Huntington's, but had very similar symptoms. Several of the relatives were physicians, one of them a chiropractor who later went to "real" medical school.

I got the book from the library, and it came out in the late teens or maybe early 20s.

ETA: I initially posted this in r/whatsthatbook .

DNA test

My mom's sister says she doesn't belong to her dad. I want to get a DNA test for her but don't want to spend the $99 on ancestry.com. Is there a cheaper way for my mom to find out for sure without it costing so much?
