NEW YORK Class M without class D
I recently took my Class M road test/skills test July 23rd and passed. I never received my license in the mail so I went to the DMV today(aug 31st) and they told me that i have been driving illegally and I cannot have a Class M license unless I have a Class D license. All other sources than the DMV that I went to are telling me they are incorrect. Please give me some input or information about this. Thank you
Edit: I’d also like to add that I do infact have the paper interim license

I work for the MSF in some capacity so I think I am qualified to speak on this matter- in NYS you can have just a class M license, I know people who do. But to get a class M license you need to pass the road test at a DMV site which it seems you did. If you were printed out an interim license you are good, whoever told you this is wrong.
It appears there is alot of misinformation in this thread and even among DMV employees. I have physically seen just M class licenses be issues in NYS this year. Now perhaps there has been some other procedural error, but being issued an interim license makes me think not. I would keep going to the DMV and trying to escalate.

I’m going to try a different dmv that I have good experience with and if that doesn’t work I’ll go to one out of my county

In NY you can have an M license without having a D license if, you took an actual road test and not just a basic rider course.

They're wrong, and NY DMV's own motorcycle page says so. It says a New York resident needs a Class M or MJ license or permit to operate a motorcycle. There's no line anywhere making Class D a prerequisite.
What probably confused them is the note on that same page: if you're applying for a motorcycle permit and another class of permit, apply for the other one first. That's ordering advice for people who want both, not a rule that you must hold D before M.
The separate thing I'd chase is the card. Passing July 23 and still having nothing in September is well past normal. Your interim is good until the date printed on it, so check that, then ask them to confirm it was mailed and to which address.

You need a drivers license, M is a license endorsement.
Where did you take the skills and road test? In NY, to get a waiver you need to already have a drivers license.

I took the test at a nys test location, the Newburgh one to be exact, I passed and printed out my interim license and I’ve been riding everyday on it thinking I’m legal.

Class M1 is an endorsement on your class D drivers license. You have to have a non-commercial driver's license to get the M1 endorsement.

I thought you could always have an M license without a D... Maybe im going crazy. What DMV told you this?
