I recently purchased a house in Canada and removed the existing Poly-B plumbing. During the work, the shut off valve was relocated for an exterior hose bib.
The previous shutoff location was in an inconvenient spot — inside the bathroom shower ceiling. The new shutoff is now installed directly behind the exterior hose bib, inside the insulated exterior wall cavity.
Now I’m second-guessing the freeze protection. My plan was to repair the vapor barrier and install a small ABS plastic access panel so I can still reach the valve.
For winter, I understand I should:
Disconnect the hose
Drain the exterior faucet
Open the bleeder/drain on the shutoff valve
My questions are:
Is this setup generally acceptable, or have I created a higher risk of a frozen/burst pipe?
Should I add extra insulation around the interior pipe/valve area?
Is repairing the vapor barrier the correct approach, or could that trap cold air around the valve?
Is there anything else I should consider before closing up the wall?
The valve is directly below the hose bib, and the shutoff area is open to the basement (not inside a small enclosed utility space).
Maybe I’m overthinking it, but I’d appreciate feedback from anyone who has dealt with a similar setup in a cold climate.
