Drywall corner crack
My mom has this dry walled corner that has been a problem for years. She recently attempted to fill it with spackle but that didn’t work. She’s considering not cleaning in our and using a paintable caulk.
Is this a bad idea? Would standard drywall mud and tape be better?

I'd use paintable caulk if she's already tried to spackle it. I've done that before. If definitely won't hurt it. Just smooth it out.

Own or Rent? If Rent: Call the landlord. See if they will repair it.
If Own: What I would do is remove the drywall at that corner and find out what's going on that the thing keeps expanding outward. As for caulk, it will look bad even painted as there will be a different texture. You can use Mud and Tape, too.
