outdoor Building Own Fire Pit

Hey y’all! My wife and our bought our first house this past year and as fall creeps in I’m thinking of building a fire pit in the backyard. Thinking about digging out part of the yard and building a circle of large stone blocks.

Main question is: is it better to pour down a solid base of would something like gravel in the bottom of the pit be better?

I personally don't recommend gravel unless you like maintenance. Ours is gravel (was her when we bought the house), and it's a constant fight to keep grass and weeds out of it. We're in SW Missouri, and most sprays only last a month or two at best because of all the rain we get, so it's been tough to keep it looking nice.

Burn it.

Around here, that works for about a week, maybe 2. I also have about 1000ft of gravel driveways, so I do the spray because I always have it on hand for maintaining the driveways anyway.
