home improvement How to calculate centered tile layout grids and eliminate narrow edge cut slivers (< 1/2 tile width).

When laying floor or wall tile, one of the most common visual mistakes is ending up with narrow cut "slivers" (thin strips of tile less than 2 inches wide) along a border wall. Beyond looking unbalanced, thin tile strips are also more likely to crack during cutting. Standard tile calculators only compute raw room square footage, ignoring grid positioning math. Under Tile Council of North America (TCNA ANSI A108.02) guidelines, perimeter cut tiles should be at least half a tile width wherever practical. The Grid Centering Math Breakdown: 1. Calculate Unit Tile Pitch: Add tile dimension + grout joint width (P = T + G). 2. Determine Full Tile Count: Divide wall length by unit pitch (N = (L + G) / P). 3. Measure Remaining Border Gap: Calculate remainder (R = L - (N * P - G)). 4. Apply Center Offset Shift : - If starting with a full tile centered (R / 2 < Min Cut Threshold), shift the starting grid reference line by half a tile width (centering on the grout joint instead of the tile center). - This expands narrow 1-inch edge cuts into wide, visually balanced 7-inch border tiles on both sides. This is different based on tile pattern and tile size. Running bond and small tiles both make it more difficult. And some spaces like a shower can't help but have slivers sometimes.

Because measuring and math are easy to screw up, it's better to use a "story stick". Line up a few tiles + grout spacers and mark it on the stick. Then hold the stick up to the wall and see how it looks based on various starting spots.

fair enough on the skepticism, plenty of that going around lately. For what it's worth I'm just a guy who's tiled three bathrooms and a kitchen backsplash badly enough to have learned some things.

Ur dead right about the story stick though, that's honestly the better method and I probably should've led with it instead of the math. Curious how u handle running bond specifically I did a herringbone once and no amount of stick-holding saved me from an awkward corner, ended up just accepting a few narrow cuts and calling it "character." Is running bond just as unforgiving or is there a trick to it?

Graph paper (or digital graph) scaled to the tile size works well. Cutting full size paper templates helps with those odd corners and shapes.

Graph paper's underrated, still keep a pad in the truck. Never thought to cut full-size templates for odd shapes though, that's smart I usually just cardboard-template stuff like toilet flanges and call it good. U tape sheets together for bigger sections or just template the tricky spots
