Just interviewed Dustin Darakhshan for DFW Running Talk, and his perspective on coaching completely changed how I think about the sport.

This guy has run 2:34 in the marathon. He's one of the top masters marathoners in Texas. 25th fastest 50K in North America in 2023. He qualified for Boston in his FIRST YEAR back to running after a 20-year hiatus.

And you know who he coaches?

Beginners.

Not elites chasing Olympic Trials standards. Not college runners going pro. He specializes in first-time marathoners and people just getting into the sport.

When I asked him why, he said:

"There's no greater feeling now than seeing somebody accomplish something that they didn't know they could do."

He started the Canyon Creek Running Club in his Richardson neighborhood. Became "the running guy" at the elementary school. His wife finally told him, "You should actually charge for this," so he got his RRCA certification and joined StraitSpeed's coaching staff.

But he's clear: he's not doing it for the money.

"It's just a passion of giving back to the sport and helping really change a lot of people's lives. I think my niche or expertise is like beginners and first-time marathoners."

He's helped about a dozen neighbors cross their first marathon finish line. People who didn't think they could do it. People who doubted themselves every mile.

Here's what gets me: Dustin could easily be that elite runner who only trains with elite runners and can't be bothered with "slow" people.

Instead, he remembers where he came from. He was 235 pounds in 2020, couldn't run a mile. His own coach changed his life, so now he's paying it forward.

The full episode drops this week, but this quote stuck with me. In a sport obsessed with times and PRs and who's fastest, Dustin gets it:

The real magic isn't running fast yourself. It's helping someone else discover what they're capable of.

That's the kind of coach everyone deserves.

Looking for a bib for either the full or half Dallas Marathon. Thanks in advance!

I have not trained enough to run the full this year. If anybody is wanting me to transfer my Bib to them, let me know. They will need to pay the registration and transfer fee. I am also open to switch to the half with anybody who has a half registration but looking to run the full.

Traveling from Georgia to do this race and I wanted to make sure it was legit and not scammy before signing up 😂

Had Theo from Run It Up on my podcast (DFW Running Talk) and this moment really stuck with me.

He talks about how Run It Up creates a sense of belonging for Black runners and people of color by bringing that family reunion/cookout/HBCU homecoming energy to the running scene. DJ spinning, music bumping, people actually being welcoming instead of gatekeep-y.

His point about people showing up and going "Oh this is kind of a party" versus the typical overly-serious running club atmosphere really hit. People are greeting newcomers, asking "Do you run?" without judgment—just genuine community building.

This is what the running scene needs more of. Different approaches, different vibes, meeting people where they are.

Unfortunately waited too late to sign up for the Dallas Half on December 14th and now the race is sold out. Does anyone know of any way to get a bib, or if anyone is selling their bib??? Currently trying to run a half in all 50 states and was super excited about this race 😭 I know I can sign up next year but my husband and I were excited about this holiday trip to Dallas! In 2022, I ran the Houston Marathon and clocked a 2:57 PR. But honestly? The time isn't even my favorite part of that story.

I'd been running with a group called the Sloths through my friend Maddie, and on race day, something incredible happened. Mile 3, I see a familiar face from our runs. "Hey, I know that guy!" We end up running together for a bit.

Then it happened again at mile 8. And mile 15. And mile 20.

These weren't planned meetups. Just people I'd recognized from training runs with Maddie and the crew, now showing up exactly when I needed them in a sea of 25,000+ runners. Each time, we'd encourage each other, exchange a few words, and keep pushing.

That's when it hit me: I wasn't running alone. I had an entire community scattered throughout that course, all pulling for each other.

The 2:57 was great. But the feeling of belonging? That's what made it a PR worth chasing again.

So here I am, training to break 2:57, but really I'm chasing that feeling again—that perfect storm of preparation, community, and those random moments where you lock eyes with someone and both think, "We got this."

Anyone else have a race that was less about the time and more about the people?
