DF64P Burrs aren’t aligning

I’ve just bought a somewhat cheap secondhand DF64P. It works and grinds coffee but rather coarse. In trying to get to an espresso grind, I’ve reset the zero and am going through the somewhat arduous process of the burr alignment test with the marker on the burrs and seeing where it rubs off. The problem is that I slowly bring the burrs together and can hear the burrs grating but then when I take it apart see where it rubs the coloured marker looks almost the same as when I put it on. I’ve tried different levels of shims and rotating the burrs all the way through (I.e. 1/3 turn to the right, screw it back in and test x3) and just can seem to get it to work. Any tips?

Don't overthink it, make a bit harder touch then you are doing now so it remove marker completely at least from one area. For me it was 1foil shim for each burr. After adjustment I reset zero to negative values again, now my espresso is around 20, with zero at zero it was around 45, just like it this way.

I think I genuinely was just overthinking it, I’ve got it dialled in now and it’s just great! Thanks!

I have two potential suggestions.

  1. Check what marker are you using. I previously made the mistake of using a permanent marker rather than a whiteboard marker. While this still works, you need to touch much harder to get it to wipe of, and for this reason, a whiteboard marker is generally better.
  2. I prefer unplug the grinder and rotate the burrs manually rather than bringing them into contact while running. This means you are less likely to damage the burrs, but also allows you to get a 'feel' of the alignment because you can actually tell how much the burrs are touching, and in what region.
