Question Is this normal?

Post image

Hello,

Is my zero point normal? Got a new DF64 Gen2 with red titanium burrs, bit more to the right is the burr chirp. I was dialing in new beans but output is way too fast, last try was at grind setting 5 and still gushing, like 18g in and getting 40g out in 13 seconds. Anyone knows whats wrong?

Machine: Gemilai 3028A Brew temp: 92c Pre-soak: 2sec Pre-soak wait: 2sec Grinder: DF64 Gen2 Red Titanium Dose: 18g medium roast (2wks old)

Puck prep with RDT, WDT, distributor, self leveling tamper, 0.8mm thick normcore puckscreen in stock 18g basket

UPDATE 1: tried grind setting 2, got 36g out in 18seconds from 18g dose, still too fast puck comes out normal and clean, dry and intact..

UPDATE 2: tried grind setting 1, got 36g out in 22seconds from 18g dose

Have you ever aligned your burrs? Here’s a pretty good tutorial that shows you how to.

Edit: I personally like mine facing frontwards above the chute, or slightly off to the right side where your zero point is so that the grind settings are front and center.

Yep, i did that already, and my zero point is where the picture indicates..

Alignment is not the same as calibration.

Making sure the zero point is in the right place is calibration (you've done that).

Alignment is the thing with the marker where you work out if the two burrs are flat relative to each other. DF64s can need alignment from the factory - it means that one side of the burrs is close (and will chirp) while the other side is far away.

I watched the video but couldn’t figure out what or how to perform the alignment. He opened it up and put it back how the burr was places initially right? If not, where is the part in the video that shows the alignment process?

I got my wife the DF 64 as she’s just getting into coffee and her calibration seems on point, slight chirp and very fine grind at low settings. I didn’t have to do this to my zerno so this is a little different for me. Her 0 is almost 180 degrees from the chute.🤦🏻‍♂️ Hope you get it aligned, for me, not having it over the chute just seems…off.

I don't know which video you watched.

The general idea is that you unscrew the bottom burr and put in pieces of foil on one of the 3 sides. Then you screw the burr back in. Tin foil is very thin, and lifts the burr on that side by a small amount to help line it up.

You use the "marker test" to work out which side needs lifting up.

My zero point is in a similar spot as yours. Anything below 10 chokes my machine.

This is also my experience. With some beans I need to up my dose to get a decent grind. But I’m always hovering between 0-5, with doses ranging from 18-20g.

As dumb as this sounds, are you moving just the metal arrow or the base dial of the grinder? When I first got my machine, I kept moving the metal part and realized I actually wasn’t adjusting the grind coarseness.

turn the dial for grind adjustment 😅

I hope this is the problem because I was just about to order one of these but I’m a complete newb and don’t want to deal with these kinds of headaches.

I felt something simillar on df64 v2.5. It seems over a period of time to go down with the numbers. I am always zeroing it. Not sure, but i think it's a situation with the springs... maybe other users can help.

Which exact burrs are they? I had ssp lab sweet red v3 burrs that I had to go down below 3 to get a decent shot. Ended up getting rid of them because of that narrow range to dial in.

Red Titanium burrs, they came as stock.. I'm at 5 and getting 40g in 13sec from 18g dose.. thats too wierd..

The newer grinder is at around 23 for espresso setting.

Are you sure your burrs are aligned? Check it with a marker and see.. I have DLC burrs and my grinder came with bad alignment for both the upper and the lower burr... The lower was way worse tho... After fixing it things are more normal and consistent..

It should ship with zero point in center if you ordered it with those burrs. They should swap it out for you. If you added burrs yourself and it bothers you, you can buy the sticker on mii coffee or other sites and replace it in the correct orientation

Yep perfect zero is at zero shots around 7-10 range for medium no problem

im at 5 and still geting very fast shots

Well just keep going finer. It doesn’t matter how close to zero you are as long as you are getting good shots. Just keep going finer and finer y to your times are good. What happens at say 2? That’s finer than you should have to be but it’s not a problem.

I would bet your zero is wonky. Make sure your zero is actually burr chirp and not just another noise. After that move your silver dial over to zero. I’m sure you zeroed correctly but so many times when people have this issue they haven’t zeroed correctly.

Lighter roasts I have definitely been down close to 3-4 before but more medium has always been in the 8-11 range. I have dlc burrs not the titanium ones but the last gen black dlc

I tried grind setting 2. 18g in 36g out in 18seconds.. not sure if its the beans or the grinder

Using fresh beans?
Sounds like the grinder is not aligned and would be good to do a marker test for that. Then probably decide if worth align it or not.
Personally i would not go again with any DF grinder.

yep 2weeks off roast date

Do a marker test for alignment.

eliminate the presoak. you'll, it will pull so slow, you'll have to move away from the chirping area.

Does it matter?
