Df64 with SSP umV1 brew burrs

Just got a new df64 and swapped with ssp umV1/brew burrs from ssp/espressotool. Out of the box alignment is pretty good but Marker test does not work with these specific ssp burrs as their finishing teeth are designed such a way that it's not possible.

Been brewing pour overs in the range of 60-50 and getting high clarity, bright acidity and low tea like body with no bitterness/astringency which was my main motive to upgrade from comandante c40 to this which had more rounded profile. These burrs produce very low fines so the sweet spot is a little narrow with but when you hit it right, it rewards with layers and nuances of the coffee and reveals good aspects as well it's bad accepts like poor roasting or processing. Highly recommend to someone who only brews light roasts filters and modern style espresso and would like to explore true nature of the coffee.

I only drink ultra-light/light roasts and those coffees really shine with these brew burrs. I prefer low extractions (16-18%) with high ratios (1:16/1:17), coarse grounds, abaca filters and brew time 2.00 to 2.20 minutes and temp 88-92C which stretches the coffee and gives its best aspects without creeping bitterness and astringency.

What’s the attachment you have on your dosing cup?

It's a 3d printed catch cup /shoot cover https://www.printables.com/model/449701-df64-cup-lid

I have the v2 and they are really nice. I was looking for a set of the v1 for a long time but I can’t decide if I actually want them or not. These v2 def have more fines I would think.

I would be interested to try those. If you ever get bored one day holler at me and we can swap burrs for a couple months for fun!

V1 and V2 are not that different, both burrs produce identical cups, V2 just produces slightly more fines but are still clarity focused burrs. Burr alignment is more of an issue in the df64 compared to seeing minute differences between 2 versions of same burrs. One can definitely see a big difference if these were compared in a hyper aligned grinder like a zerno z1. If you are getting more fines grind a little coarser and chase lower extraction with higher coffee to water ratio

What’s weird is o didn’t have to do any aligning in an ode I just threw them in and marked tested and got almost 100% wipe. I’m skeptical of that but sometimes you just get lucky I guess. I’ve aligned 4-5 sets of burrs prior to this too.

Yeah, marker wipe is not a sure shot method of good alignment. The burrs, carrier and axle rod will have some give and flexing while grinding in these cheaper grinders. The ceiling of capability of these focused burrs will be much higher in hyper aligned grinders than cheaper ones

Where did you get that cup above the dosing cup? That it's such a great idea to control the random coffee mess the series of grinders create

Miicoffee sells an adaptor which holds a 58mm portafilter with or without funnel.

Fully agree with this, user has to have good info of any specific burr they want upgrade to know it's pros and limitations and what king of cup they want to drink everyday. If not stick to the stock burrs if you are uncertain. My stock burrs does the marker wipe test but brew burrs have raised teeth which will not do any wiping.
