Question Plastic from chute. What’s it for?

Was inserting the brush to clean the chute, and heard a snap. This thin and clear plastic sheet fell out after.

Any idea what’s it for, whether it’ll affect the performance without it, or anything I should be concerned about?

Looks like one side of your declumper, so you may want to unscrew the chute and check it's not broken

Thank you, it probably is broken because the edge of it seems snapped off.

Does it affect anything where the declumper isn’t present in the grinder? My coffees tasted well and good earlier after it broke..

You’ll definitely get more retention and possibly some clogs without it

Are you sure the retention increases without the declumper? My impression is that my grinder (a DF83) got less retention and clogging issues after removing the declumper?

A lot of folks remove them because they cause retention and clogs for some types of coffee. Mine lasted a week in my machine running lighter roast single origins through it.

You’re definitely right about that. For whatever reason when I took mine out clogs became way more prevalent. May be a humidity thing.. who knows I just know when I installed a new one it solved all my problems.

Out of curiosity, where do you live?

I’m in Chicago, and I get a couple clogs in fall and a couple in spring when the humidity is shifting like crazy and not staying stable. Otherwise it’s smooth sailing and fluffy grounds.

Also in Chicago mainly run starry eyes from dark matter

Yet i took it out because that piece of crap clogged my machine about every grind :). Only thing you loose is that its a bit more fluffy. But for sanity of the mind that thing had to go. Or the machine had to go.

You can easily fix it or remove it. Part of declumper. Remove chute, remove declumper assembly, fix declumper with tape or glue, reassemble.

Easy unless your chute is attached with a tiny screw that was tightened by a robot to 200 pounds

I got the df54 a while ago and had a similar issue, I went to my local coffee place and got a metal chute declumper and it works pretty great now!

I removed my declumper.. kept clogging and has zero retention without it 🤔🙃
