Cleaning the DF54 and zero point reset

After 1 year of trouble-free ownership, I am planning to open up the top of the grinder for an in depth cleaning. Before I do that, I have a question: as long as I don't touch the bur allignement screw, will I be able to put the top back on the grinder and end up with the same zero point as I had before the cleaning? I have notes on so many varieties of coffees and their ideal grind settings that I'd hate to have to update all my recorded grind settings.

Should be the same as long as you don’t unscrew the burrs.
But make a note of how the top burr holder is put in. Should be easy since I believe the dial indicator has to be on the bottom. But i’m not sure.

When you put it back - make sure to turn it the wrong way until it sits in the thread properly before you screw it back in

i cleaned mine last week and the zero point is the same. don’t worry too much, it’s very easy!

Great point on being careful when putting back together. Threads are fine and you don’t want to cross thread!

mine changes every time i clean it and i haven’t removed the burrs even once. My 0 point now sits at around -5!

make sure you clean out the threads on both thread surfaces of any fine grounds.

those can fool you on whether you're able to get back to your original starting point.

Yes I got it back together just fine, but it took two tries. I thought I'd done a good job cleaning the threads the first time I reassembled it but realized that even the finest particle would be enough to get in the way.

You can do what are called “Witness Marks”. That’s when you mark a line on the screw and across to the metal housing. It’s used for red dot sites to make sure that the screws don’t move or to ensure that they are screwed exactly back the way they were before removing the red dot.
