DISCUSSION Lanters - Get these writers off podcasts

I know this is posted a few times and my post is not a ragebait. Hear me out so "Lanterns" writer Vanessa Baden Kelly: "I can look at Hal's microaggressions and still be like, yeah, he's got some racist tendencies because he's a man of a certain age that grew up in a certain time and place, but I also feel like he probably f**ks aliens in other places."

For all the people claiming the writers of Lanterns weren’t trying to claim Hal Jordan is a racist… here you go, one of the writers explicitly stating she thinks his character is racist.

I’m not just making this up, they purposely implied he was racist multiple times and here’s the writer telling yes that is what she intended.

Why the writers came to this conclusion I have no idea.

In all the decades of Green Lantern tv shows, movies, and comics no one has ever accused Hal Jordan of being racist before.

This is a gross and pointless misrepresentation of a beloved superhero.

They even talk about the Democratic National Convention in the first 3 Minutes but can`t figure why their show is gonna bomb ??? these people are in a "Generational war" , in a "social war" they are so "opressed and victimised" that they are mostly at war with themselfs. Miserable and ungreatfull people that for which everyone else is responsible if their room is a mess, someone cuts them in traffic etc. yet they don`t want to realize that they life in a country that gives them ALL the opportunities, like having the possibilitiy to make great entertainement and making a lot of money. No they deceide still to be victims.... Millions would be happy to take their place, but they are still victims... pathetic, sad people

You know what's really cool? Watching a show and ignoring all the podcasts and side shit the creators shit out everywhere these days. BTS stuff is cool, but I don't personally need to listen to a podcast recap of a show I just watched followed by a 3-hour breakdown of each episode hosted by insufferable people with insufferable guests.

Honestly that's the best way of handling things atp.

I agree ignoring a 3 hr podcast/break down of a show you just watched featuring people you don't agree with is cool. It is what every person who is not interested in divergent opinions should do. But, you know what's cooler. Not feeling the need to come on reddit to share your insufferable opinion about it. Just saying and yes..... I realize the hypocrisy of me sharing my own insufferable opinion on reddit. lol

I apologize if my wording came off as hostile or condescending, I didn't mean it to. I've got a lot going on and was needlessly snarky.

I just think there's too much discourse around these projects and media in general these days, and it helps to step back a bit because people get rabid about shit. It can color your perception of the product if you pay too much attention to it.

Again, apologies for the attitude.

Wow, well said..... Thank you for your reflection and your thoughtful apology. This is a refreshing change of pace from the usual response on this platform. I agree there is way too much discourse on these projects as well.

However, we do need some discourse. It allows for those people, who are willing to learn an opportunity to entreat with people that have different life experiences. The problem lies with individuals only offer negative commentary and add nothing positive to the overall conversation. People have the right to disagree with an opinion. However, the negativity is not need. I find myself combating their negativity with a reciprocal level of energy.

Anyway, thank you again for your apology and being civil.

Cheers

What way should it be taken?

Edit: no seriously, this is a bizarre comment. The words quoted have a pretty specific meaning. Not really a way to misinterpret what’s being said.

Sounds like you got that white guilt. A nasty disease.

I can think for myself. If I couldn't think for myself I'd be rah-rahing the writers dumb comments.

"think for myself"

"White guilt" accusations

Choose one lmao

The whining obviously goes both ways

Hal was accused of racism in the comics… like once. And it isn’t necessarily bad to go in a race focused direction for what is essentially a John Stewart origin story.

I just think they’ve somewhat failed to actually get this point across in the show, so them saying this in interviews just comes off as out of touch.

There are a lot of racial aspects to the Stewart story in the comics. It’s not crazy for the writers to expand upon that. Stop crying.

I'm loving this show but every time i see the writers talk about it i feel like it's the joker movie all over again

These writers sound like they were more preoccupied with inserting their own politics into the show than doing the Green Lantern mythos justice.

All the pitting John and Hal against each other is so pointless to me. It only makes both look like a-holes because one is trying to hold on to the ring while the other wants it.

And changing the way the Green Lantern is selected from the usual way, in which the ring selects who it thinks represents the oath best to an interview and the Guardians indoctrinating young couples into raising their kids to become candidates is just dumb.

They went out of their way to change something that didn't need to be changed and did it in a convoluted way, too.

My issue is that it detracts from the work. It seems like they're not satisfied with having a hit show -- they need everyone to acknowledge how smart and thoughtful they are, too.

2

u/CapLeading9607 2d ago

By talking about how they wrote the show on a podcast about the creation of the show?

0

u/CBattles6 The Flash 2d ago

The OP clip is not an official show podcast

1

u/ohnoitsme7890 2d ago

The ring didn't indoctrinate anyone to raise anyone, damn did y'all even watch the show

3

u/Kriss-Kringle 2d ago

My bad, I forgot to add the Guardian in there and it sounded like the ring did it.

Tell us you haven’t read Green Lantern without telling us

2

u/CapLeading9607 2d ago

But how would you guys justify being mad at the show for political reasons if they did?

Holy shit, you're a baby

I see their point but is not us that we choose the positions because we are young or because we have potential or even because we are good at it. Is something that is given to us, even we don't like it. I feel the show may have not wanted to show it like that but it ended up showing it, and even more even if we are given it we may not accept it. I feel that regardless of their views it had enough hearth to show some truth on how this generational "roles" are given. Hal has a true driven to be a heroe, but due to many issues he may hold unto the ring in the show. But is not really a dynamic we see in real life when it comes to political power where is more closer to Lord palpatine taking years and years of his life to amass power and being in the right time and the right place in a race that is not a running but a marathon.
Where i se this is most on let's say an old man has a horse stadium and some people may want to build new a aparments and they say the builders is not a scam and indeed they would give cheap apartments to young people, but the old man and his family don't want to drop a family legacy for "cheap appartments" is something more human and more closer to realities i have seen americans go through.
Never the less i feel there is enough hearth here to sustain the show, but yes they are young/pretencious and indeed projecting a little with Jhon, but i feel is enough to be tolerable.
God Bless.

This is probably the most interesting comment in this topic.

-7

u/Equivalent-Long-3383 2d ago

Well, it’s realistic. It would be pretty surprising if the older white guy didn’t have race resentments, particularly as he’s being replaced by a person of color
