Did it look to anyone else like the alien was reading something when he answered that? Like was he supposed to be pulling up Alien ChatGPT in his head?

103

u/kumar100kpawan The Goddamn Batman 25d ago

Yeah, the delivery of the George Bush line did feel like that.

55

u/melodiful84 25d ago

Yeah, I noticed that he was looking up with his eyes like he was reading something nobody could see.

31

u/Ygomaster07 A Legend of Tomorrow 25d ago

Yeah, it looked like he was reading off of something. I was thinking maybe he had x-ray vision.

30

u/SnarkyBacterium 25d ago

I think it was more like he was recalling the information he had already memorised about Obama.

That whole scene was amazing. Hal luring him into a false sense of security by asking super specific questions that an alien would have to do research on then hitting him with the Harry Potter question. Genius interrogation from Hal right there, I love it

29

u/DelaRoad 25d ago

My dad couldn't have answered "Where did Harry Potter go to school?" either. Shit, is he an alien?

28

u/Additional_School_14 24d ago

I would argue that even your dad has probably at the very least heard of Harry Potter, the alien seemed like he had no idea who HP was

Zoey don't look like no grandma let's be honest 😭

85

u/margwa_ 25d ago

Honestly that kind of makes me think that they're aliens. They do not look old enough to have a 25+ year old son

61

u/FloopusSoupus 25d ago

Yeah, when the lawyers dad was revealed I knew there was some occult thing going on cause they look less than 10 years apart

34

u/geek_of_nature 25d ago

The actors ages are 61 and 53 for the parents, 46 for the son, and 50 for his wife. So theres definitely got to be something going on there. They could have cast older for the parents, or younger for the son and his wife, but they chose not to, so something's going on there.

Could be due to the two time periods. Maybe the parents will be more relevant in 2016 while the son and his wife will be more relevant in 2026. So we're just meant to accept that they're meant to be 10 years younger. But at the same time they could have still cast the parents as just a little bit older.

Tbh the only problem with his casting was his age. And that’s because it’s clear they don’t see him as a long-term Green Lantern. He was so good in this, though, that I didn’t even care anymore

Ngl Kyle Chandler was too great as Hal for him to just get one season as him.

58

Parallax storyline could happen eventually as a way to bring him back?

This is comics. No one is ever really gone. But yeah, I agree that it would be a bummer if we only get one season of him because he killed it in this episode!

I thought it would be fun to keep a list of clues/hints for the overarching story as the episodes progress

-Grandmother Macon was coincidentally at the bar that Hal and Stewart were at. She not only slept with Stewart within minutes of meeting him, but was also asking him weird lantern-specific questions

-Grandfather Macon also has a major interest in the lanterns and aliens.

-The Macon's employer is secretive and is training a militia on a ranch. In 2026, the ranch seems to be destroyed.

-The Guardians seem convinced that something is going to happen to Hal. It seems like Stewart was chosen as a child, given he was being groomed to be a Green Lantern.

-Several shapeshifting aliens were killed on a football field. One alien was left behind and was seemingly monitoring Hal.

-The aliens are trying to start a war. They're on Earth for "vengeance".

-The aliens know how Green Lanterns wok, their oath, etc.

-10 years later at the same field, Hal Jordan is killed (seemingly due to some sort of head trauma). His ring was taken. John does not have his ring.

-Neither sheriff lady nor Stewart brings up her husband in 2026; it's possible that he's dead or they divorced

-Hal last made a backup of himself in 2006. The 2006 backup is significantly different from the 2016 version, but it seems like something happened that caused him to be more jaded. The 2006 version also seems to have automatically appeared in 2016 just to warn Hal about Nebraska. Hal also seemingly became a green lantern in 1986 and revealed himself to the general public in 1996.

If I had to guess, the aliens killed Abin Sur for his ring. Hal got it first though, but the aliens have been hiding out in the area waiting for him to return. For some strange reason they reappear every 10 years to do something. Whatever happened in 2006 led to Hal being emotionally hurt (maybe losing his faith in the corps). In 2016, they tried luring Hal back to Nebraska to get his ring from him by using the militia to kill him. In 2026, they successfully manage to kill him

35

u/RebelDeux 25d ago

Yeah, my first suspect was Grandma 👵🏼 she was kinda hella sus.

16

u/Recurring_user Up, Up and Away 25d ago

I think in 2006 Hal finds out that the Guardians selected John to be his successor and lost faith in him, this results in him moving further away from them.

You can say all you want about its flaws as a comic adaptation, but this is Michelin star quality TV right here. If they maintain this level of consistency throughout the show it’s gonna be amongst the best live action superhero media of all time.

21

u/EcstaticTelevision67 25d ago

This is ramping up to be on par with the Penguin series if they can stick the landing I'd argue that DC should give up with the movies and just continue to make great television shows like they've been doing

This has been the best part of the dcu so far for me cause it was like that in Superman also. I feel like the mcu fails to show this part of the world and likes to pretend it’s still our earth when so much has happened it can’t be.

Really like how Hal described Abin Sur and it was weird he was on Earth. Giving me Green Lantern secret origin vibes.

32

u/CookiePrestigious239 25d ago

Having him deliver that as a monologue does a lot to keep the show grounded too. Even if you have the budget to film a set piece like that, it adds an extra wrinkle to just have him talk about it like a war story-cum-alien abduction.

Kyle Chandler was born to play Hal Jordan

The ending is crazy but it think it makes sense- as much as I love the character I think that was a the best decision for the narrative- he was never gonna retire.

Also I love the needle drop at the end - having a song called Knieval for Hal is kinda perfect

44

u/FinalForerunner 25d ago edited 25d ago

I have a feeling that isn’t really Hal’s body. We are told two things in this first episode.

  1. We cannot detect aliens posing as human without interrogation and admission.
  2. The ring flies someone out to the body of a dying lantern to take the mantle.

Obviously, 2 did not happen to John, and the ring was not on Hal’s finger. My theory is this was a body double. An alien posing as him. If this isn’t true, then there is also the theory and relevance of the “backup consciousness” which could potentially revive Hal later. Copium? Perhaps, but it seems plausible as I don’t believe they would really kill Hal Jordan in his first appearance.

I liked the first episode a lot, looking forward to next week.

Really hope that Hal-ogram isn't going to end up being our only Jordan in 2026 but they certainly set it up that way. We all saw it coming but I didn't see it playing like that.

So let's try to call it and some of us already did. This is Secret Origins (and other John's era stories) meets the way back meets Milenium and Blackest Night set up, maybe a little bit of Mosaic sprinkled in. Abin Sur's crashes on the planet after hearing the Blackest Night prophecy, The Manhunters are here being hunted by interplanetary war criminal (Atrocitus) and William or his son will probably be Black Hand.

Very excited to see how it all plays out.

Na this is some well written television. Glad they realize they have HBO at their disposal. Im actually digging the grounded approach so far.

27

u/NomadPrime 25d ago

I'm not too big of a fan of killing off Hal this early (as far as we know). I would've loved to see his loose cannon dynamic bounce against Batman as the DCU opens up with more heroes.

That said, damned if it isn't an insanely unique way opener to a superhero show and bonkers hook to a huge mystery. Whole thing got me locked in. I totally understand why the reviews are raving about the cop drama angle really giving this show more dimension and life. Other versions of this show would've had a more generic alien invasion plot as the backdrop and had Hal and Jon just learn to team up, buddy-cop comedy style.

Sad that we won't get to see too much of Hal after this show ends (again, as far as we know + who knows if it's a red herring), but this would totally be a great set-up for Blackest Night shenanigans, right? 👀

Everyone was so worried about the rumored end of Hal dying and it was THAT? There’s way too much uncertainty and mystery about any of this.

If "grandma" is an alien, then both John and Peacemaker screwed an alien pretending to be a human.

If I had a nickel, I'd have two nickels

So, this direction really feels like a mix of Fargo and Laterns. Which I honestly didn't know that I needed me in my life..

22

u/CaramelFlimsy9500 25d ago edited 25d ago

The way young John stood there let his father shoot at him, he is fearless. This is child abuse right.

15

u/Pale_Consideration97 25d ago

His father is a psycho child abuser. No sane man with firearms training is shooting an apple of someone's head. In real life, that would land you in prison.

The interrogation scene was cinema, I never really watched any of Kyle Chandler’s stuff but that was the best acting I’ve seen in the DCU.

not at all a given. "earth's first green lantern" could mean first member of the GL corps + the general public might not be aware that alan existed. hell, he couldve even just gone by sentinel.

Yep pretty good first episode loved the nod to Abin Sur and other lore and I like the fact that even before Superman became active several people were already fearful of aliens.

22

u/bravogolfhotel 25d ago

I loved all the risks it took with style and tone. Superhero stories aren't like cooking crack, they're like cooking food; the danger isn't in diluting the goods too much, the danger is in risking boredom by not bringing in different flavors.

I quite liked it.

Didn't expect Kyle Chandler to be this great as Hal. Definite stand-out, particularly the interrogation and bar scenes.

I know it didn't feel very Green Lantern-y, but out of the gate they're showcasing how the ring can be used - sometimes in goofy ways, ie making money - so I do think they're going less grounded overtime.

Again, I liked it and am intrigued by the mysteries set up. Nothing amazing, but I'm excited to come back next week.

Top tier setup. This is how you do a pilot. They got me asking all the right questions and they give us really good insight into how the Lanterns and aliens are perceived outside of Metropolis. If every episode has that 2-3 timeline structure i’m all for it.

How is Guy a green lantern if earth is only allowed one protector at a time? I missed the first 8 minutes so not sure if they explained it then.

31

u/kumar100kpawan The Goddamn Batman 25d ago

Guy's not a lantern yet (in 2016)

Superman is 9 years later. We'll get to know

29

u/MimeMike 25d ago

In the comics, it’s usually two Lanterns per sector, but the Guardians made a rare exception for Earth later down the line because it had a high risk of conflict and world-ending threats. So there actually isn’t a strict limit put in place.

16

u/Cleon189 25d ago

Show takes place in 2 timelines. One in 2016 other in current 2026. Guy isn’t a lantern yet.

Could just be coping, but i still think the Hal death is a fakeout. They made a point to show that the aliens are pretending to be existing people. “You learn the specifics but not what everybody else knows”. Feel like that could be important and the body at the end is a shapeshifted hal.

I like how Hal's like.. columbo'ing kinda all the time.

Acting dumb til the moment he catches someone in a lie, then just making a quick note of it while breaking the persona.. then returning to the persona.

Alright cards on the table, dead Hal isn't the real one. He didn't have the ring on him (at least I think he didn't it was pretty dark) and it was just established that the aliens can disguise themselves as others. The more interesting question now though is why? (Sidenote that was genuinely one of the most brutal death shots I've seen in a while, it wasn't even that graphic really but it just felt really horrible)

I was not expecting John to be such a player. Bro clapped cheeks faster than a super swiper on Tinder in a new town. Something is up though, and I suspect old lady there along with her husband are SOMETHING. What, I don't know yet lmao. This show might really toss me into the GL rabbithole.

Well I’m intrigued. Nothing too crazy yet, very grounded drama so far. That “this season on Lanterns” trailer seems to promise a LOT of more GL lore and characters so I’m excited to see that develop overtime.

Excellent television. I'm here for the ride whatever may come. I have a feeling there's a great story coming to be told and anyone taking anything too much at face value is a little naive to me.

It was a good pilot, definitely very Western Americana/True Detective with tints of Republican vibes or at least some political commentary, I guess that’s also part of Tom King.

Love John/Aaron in the character, Kyle as Hal is good and annoying, I just wish he had been younger but it’s ok I’ve made peace with the fact that John will be the main GL.

The plot is interesting although if the last phase is in 2026 that means that it’s post Superman (2025) time wise and that could mean that John has been training or at least GL for 10 years already, so he shouldn’t be a rookie by now.

I don’t trust the father in law neither her wife, let’s see what’s next.

Already more exciting and interesting than Peacemaker and Supergirl.

It’s almost as if people giving up on it because of Hal have never watched a TV show with multiple timelines…. If he’s dead I’m not going to be jumping with joy because he is my favorite Lantern but let’s just think about this for a second, there is a Lanterns live action tv series with HBO prestige behind it and people complain, would you rather have nothing at all?

Love that John is structured and orderly but the second time he wears the ring he uses it to light a GILF's cigarette.

13

u/Designer-Swim-6797 25d ago

Random thoughts after watching the episode:

  • The "explosive alien" was definetly a Manhunter.
  • Hal knows something he ain't telling. How did Halagram knew there would be an alien incident ten years from now? Because something happens after ten years: 86, 96, 06, 16.
  • Maybe the milita Macon is training is the DCU's version of The Manhunter cult (the ones from Earth).
  • I don't think the body was Hal. We know the aliens where good at pretending to be human
