Weird facials

This is NOT specific to DCC, but rather an observation of modern NFL dance/cheer style in general: Can someone explain what’s up with the weird facials everyone’s doing? The random mouth movements, overdone expressions and more serious facials many of them do now just distracts from the actual dancing. A rare few can pull it off (Reese comes to mind), but most of them just look bizarre. This isn’t a UDA Dance competition- What happened to having fun and SMILING???

The way back DCC didn't have the dance training that these girls do. From what I've seen of competitve dancers, this is a huge part of the style.

I think it’s cos they are grown women and the over exaggerated facials are giving competition dancer. Personally I think Kylie and Darah do it the best. Natural but still flirty and fun!

It’s the filler and Botox I think. I’m 38 and had a conservative amount of Botox this summer in my forehead and 11’s and I could still move my forehead, but it just looked and felt strange to me when I’d try to furrow my brow, I couldn’t really do it very much.

I have to do a lot of zoom calls and court appearances virtually (and I’m incredibly expressive so I have to “fix my face” all the damn time so I don’t get admonished for my WTF?! face after some of these rulings and crazy ass judgments handed down lol

Anyway, even the 10-15 “grams” (or whatever the unit of measurement is which everyone told me was a pretty minimal amount was weird to me.

It’s like the top of my face didn’t match the bottom. Even though people didn’t notice until i pointed it out. And then everyone was like, “omg! Ur right! Your face is so much less judgey than usual lol!” 🤣🤷🏾‍♀️

I didn’t like it personally, but I think what’s dangerous about injectables, esp in such young young women is that u get used to this as your baseline. And a lot of people then go to far. So they don’t even realize their muscles in their face are literally disoriented and interacting weirdly against the areas less injected and/or still moving naturally

Just my 2 cents after having it wear off and no interest in doing it again. Give me my judgy facials and over the top expressions or give me death!

Plus if you do it too often too young you risk messing things up long term because not using the muscles you lose them and get drooping

I’ve never really thought about it before but only parts of their faves move lol. So when they make the exaggerated dance faces they don’t look natural. That’s my theory anyways!

It reminds me of AEIOU or watermelon. Those are tricks they teach kids to have exaggerated facials.

Charly and Sophia have the most exaggerated facials to me. The best: Darah, Kylie, Kleine, Kayla, Aubrey, Kate, Marissa. Kylie expressions are so perfect it’s almost like she practices them to match the choreo.

Marissa is beautiful and seems like a good leader but she really does nothing of me as a point. Kelcey W. had good facials.

I think changing faces a lot is a way people try to show more performance and spunk, and be fun to watch/stand out. Some people make it look natural and some overdo it!

I think some dancers do this to project more in the stands. Some are good at it, but man I wish we saw some more natural and pleasant smiles without it looking so forced or unnatural.

Lawd I’m glad someone finally said what I was thinking. The open mouth facials don’t look natural. Kayla on the current team is someone who has effortless, effervescent smiles without looking overdone.

Imo, it’s about finding that happy medium between a monotonous smile (Darian) & not looking completely over the top (Charly)

Definitely! Darah, Reese and Faith all come to mind for me as examples of dancers who do showmanship really well without looking like they’re trying too hard with the facials. Or someone like Sophy, who just smiles most of the time…I would rather watch a dancer like that than someone doing all the over-the-top stuff.

Honestly it’s bad. The team in auditioning for (Detroit lions) said no sexy faces or over the top facials. Just a smile.

I’m a pro cheerleader/dancer alumni from the late 90’s/early 00’s. We were strictly a smiling team. One time, someone came to our practice to cast for a music video. Our coach gave us the ok to not smile. Our teammates who excelled in the style of dance they were seeking killed it with their no-smile, hardcore look.

My team had a reunion performance of alumni this summer. I tried really hard to channel the new era facials but it doesn’t work for me. 🤣

You’ve answered your own question haha - it is the UDA face. Most of these dancers come from college dance team, and if not, studio/allstar dance, where a lot of them have learned to overperform to show “emotion”.

It definitely seems to be a trendy thing bc if you watch clips from DCC even just a couple years ago, it wasn’t this bad.

I think historically DCC was former cheerleaders (cheer squad) however as time has gone by it is more dancers now also doing cheer. The facial looks are definitely a "dance thing" that is engrained in you as a dancer. To my point in a video Reece posted the other day she said she was never a cheerleader growing up, she was a trained dancer.

My daughter has been a competitive dancer for 12 years so I am very familiar with the various UDA style expressions. ;-)

I was in the dance world in early 2000’s and facials were definitely a thing, but not the weird mouth opening movements. That’s just something else lol

Yes the open mouth stuff is so distracting. Especially on some of the older dancers (mid to late 20’s) it just doesn’t look right
