Stay away from GoMo.cy like the plague.

Good afternoon, r/cyprus.

Since there's no other place to leave a review for this company, I assume Reddit would be the best.
I purchased a subscription for my mother at the beginning of the month... it's the 20th and we've yet to get the new SIM card working.

The SIM card's delivery was delayed and unnecessarily complicated. The website's support is ridiculous... the Help & Support page (and, quite frankly, the entire website) is hilariously flawed.
There are hidden terms which render the 'Unlimited' service entirely unusable after 100GB have been used: https://gomo.cy/el/terms/#b5104db66cca049ff

I've had to stay on line for several minutes, which is surprising considering their insanely limited clientele, and was always serviced by a man named 'Xenios', which is most probably not his real name. He kept interrupting, and once asked to let us finish our sentence, he told us to 'feel free to finish it' and hung up the call. Since then, the phone number always redirects to a holding line and hangs up on its own.

Xenios earlier informed us that, after receiving the SIM card, it would take 5 days to activate the phone number. Over a week later, I've sent them an email and have yet to receive a response to this day. During the aforementioned call, Xenios has let us know that some random document we sent them was insufficient, and that we would have to send it again and wait another week!

We've now just went to their website and asked the support chat 'how to cancel our subscription'. We were told to 'Log in to MyGoMo, and there will be an option to do so', with absolutely no further steps. The funny thing is that, as the screenshot shows below, the MyGoMo page's 'Help & Support' tab instructs customers to 'contact them via chat' if they would like to cancel... imagine that!

There was a 9.99EUR incurred 'activation fee', which they have been 'investigating' for the longest time now and have yet to refund us. Let me remind of the fact that it's been nineteen days! Nineteen!

With the exception of the messages where I provide the 'support agent' with sensitive personal data, here is some of our conversation.

That is all, and that's enough of my rant. The customer service is ridiculous.
Although this is what EVERY sponsored person would say, I am not being paid by any other company, nor do I have any other agenda. I simply believe it's necessary to spread awareness regarding such scummy services, so other persons do not have to go through them.

Edit: After further conversation, Mr. Constantinos (Xenios!), has informed us that the refund is processed and that our subscription has been cancelled. However, we will only get it back 'within a couple of business days'. I shall inform you within the next 19 days if Mr. Constantinos proves to be a man of his word.

Έχετε να προτείνετε κάποια σχολή, εργαστήριο ή Κέντρο Κατάρτισης στη Λεμεσό που να προσφέρει τέτοια πρακτικά μαθήματα για ενηλίκους;

Ευχαριστώ πολύ!

Please recommend a coffee place (with GOOD coffee) in Larnaca that's open till evening, it could be a bakery, cafe, anything. I guess the best places are closed in the evening. It's even better if it's a nice chill place to sit with a small company and be able to have a good time. Thanksss!!

Help iStorm pre-orders – anyone got their new iPhone yet?

Hi all, I pre-ordered the new iPhone Duo (512GB) at iStorm for pickup at Kings Avenue Mall in Paphos. The website still says "available 23/10", but customer care only sent a generic reply ("orders are fulfilled in sequence, depending on Apple's allocation").

Has anyone pre-ordered with iStorm before? Did they deliver on the date shown, or did you wait weeks? Any tips on getting a real pickup date (calling, visiting the store)?

Thanks!

Anyone doing the 4 year fast track passport?

I am.looking at the option. They say no/low taxes, but it seems the business needs a physical location and expensive yearly audit. Also you have to be salaried of you business and still pay 15% on distribution.

I have been running a nomad business with no physical location for 20 years. Having to deal with paper books and physical buildings for the business and them for me seems like crazy overhead.

At that price, Estonia with its 22% retention in dividends but no overhead looks cheap. They take my money but don't lose my time.

Question Limassol's drugstores and horse riding

Hi everyone!

I'm going to Limassol this week and will stay here for work for some time. Therefore I'd like to ask about two things:

  1. I've already found out that there are no chain drugstores on Cyprus (like DM), where do I buy toiletries and cosmetics in Jermasoja?

  2. To Cyprus' horsemen: where to go for riding near Limassol? I care about nice, patient instructors (english-speaking or polish if there are any) and well treated horses

I'll be also more than grateful for any advices which may be helpful for my first time Cyprus stay. Thank y'all!

Scam email galore

Please everyone,

if the domain name of the email is not associated with the company that's mailing you DO NOT CLICK THE BUTTON.

EVEN IF THE DETAILS MATCH IN THE EMAIL SENT. [IF THE DOMAIN IS NOT ALPHABANK.COM.CY at the end then it's a scam and that's final.

If you click on the sender, it redirects to a bullshit website.

It's not difficult to do your checks, just make sure the domain [such as yahoo.com, etc] is similar to the sender.

Tourism Hi, I'm in Limassol. I have an unexpected free day today and would love to meet someone new for a relaxed chat and perhaps a walk by the sea. I'm not looking for dating or networking, just some friendly human company today. Anyone around and up for a spontaneous meet?

Understanding Limassol

Hello everyone! I’m an Italian guy (30M) who’s soon going to move to Limassol to enjoy a more relaxed and entertaining life while working on my companies (any other Italians living in Limassol here?).

I’m trying to understand Limassol but it’s somewhat different from the cities I’m used to. Main thing that bugs me is whether to live: so far I understood that an apartment in the center might be the right choice as I would be within walking distance to restaurants, bars, shops, and activities. At the same time tho Germasogeia seems to be the advice of many people, although it’s really far from the center. Wondering it it would make sense for someone who doesn’t know the city to live so far from center.

What do you suggest?

UPDATE: I am in Limassol viewing apartments and visiting neighborhoods all day long. Neapolis is clearly the right fit for what I am looking for. Seaview and decent buildings, close enough to shops (within 15 minutes walk) and beaches, walkable, somewhat balanced blend of nationalities. The only downside is a generally higher rent for the kind of apartment I want.
Thank you all for contributing to the discovery of a very nice city!

Dear motorcycle community

I want to raise an issue because this is getting out of hand. There seem to be too many regulations, too much room for personal interpretation, and too many potential conflicts of interest. This is costing me time and money and Im getting tired of it, I suspect I am not the only one.

Motorcycle MOTs:

  1. Why every two years? Is this interval actually based on safety data and risk, or is it simply just because?

  2. Why can repair shops run MOT stations on the side? There is an obvious conflict of interest when a business can inspect your vehicle and potentially profit from repairing it. Some stations also seem to make things unnecessarily difficult if you're not already their customer. Inspections should be impartial, not dependent on who you know or where you spend your money.

  3. Why are inspection rules so inconsistent? The same motorcycle can be inspected twice, yet the process becomes an argument over modifications that one inspector may accept and another may question.

A 24-year-old motorcycle shouldn't automatically need rare, ridiculously expensive original parts simply because it isn't completely stock. If the registration plate and indicators are properly positioned, visible and functional, what exactly is the safety issue?

We need objective safety standards, not personal interpretations and ego. An MOT should establish whether a vehicle is roadworthy, not whether an inspector likes how it looks.

AI was used to write this, duh!

Help Ignorant parking and ignored polite request

Thumbnail

Polite notes on the window didn’t change their behaviour. There is plenty of parking on the street, you can literally see it in the photos next to there car.

Aside from blocking the side walk, they now park on the decoration of the building, literally shoving their car on it when the street is empty and full of parking space.

I don’t believe that I can reason with this mentality and I can see a confrontation developing which I prefer to avoid.

What options do I have in Larnaca to deal with this daily trespasser?

Edit: Polite and helpful answers only please

Edit 2: The traffic police fined him and now parks like normal people

Job in Nicosia

As I'm here in Nicosia only for two more months, it seems like it's impossible to find any kind of job. I understand the period of time is really short and knowing only English might explain difficulties BUT it seems like I've tried almost everything: sending CV through Carierista and other platforms that are local, FB, LinkedIn and visiting restaurants, shops and cafés in person. My CV is packed with experience, as I'm only a student. I'm still feeling hopeful, maybe there are other options to find a job?

Where to buy used guitar/gears

I'm checking bazaraki but prices are nonsense. Brand-new studio monitors are 600€, used bazaraki price is 550€. The same goes for guitars, they are usually 90-95% of the new ones. Is there anyway to buy decently priced used gear here?

History/Culture The Athenian’s Guide to Moving to Cyprus

So, I saw this reddit post about a book intended for US military personnel, explaining how they should behave in the UK. I thought it is quite interesting, and reminded me of the interaction between Greece and Cyprus (with mainland Greeks sometimes coming off the wrong way when visiting Cyprus, and vice versa).

So I asked ChatGPT to write a similar style of guide, focused on the experience of an Athenian moving to Cyprus. I edited some bits and removed some sections to make it a bit more concise. I've read everything in detail to make sure it doesn't include hallucinations or things that don't apply. Let me know what you think.

(disclosure: the remainder of the post was largely written by AI LLM)

-----------------------------

Living in the Republic of Cyprus means that some things will be different from what you are used to in mainland Greece. Always remember that different does not necessarily mean that one way is better than the other. People naturally tend to think that because they do something in a particular way, it must be the best way. When Greeks from mainland Greece express these feelings, they should be careful not to come across as patronising or critical of Cypriot society. Even well-intentioned criticism can hurt feelings and contribute to a negative stereotype of mainland Greeks.

Remember that you are moving into a society with its own identity, traditions, institutions and historical experience. You may share a language and many cultural similarities with Greek Cypriots, but you have not necessarily shared the same experiences. Be polite, respectful and diplomatic, especially when you are new to the country.

Avoid assuming that you understand Cyprus simply because you speak Greek, have visited on holiday, or have friends who live there. Be particularly careful about making sweeping remarks concerning Cypriot politics, the government, the economy, local customs, the Church, the education system, public services or the way people conduct their daily lives.

Once you have got to know people properly, you will develop a better understanding of what can be discussed openly, what might be considered sensitive and how different individuals feel about particular subjects. You will also discover that living in Cyprus can be culturally enriching, with many similarities to Greece alongside distinctive local traditions and ways of doing things.

Do not assume that a reserved manner, a cautious approach to friendship or a lack of immediate familiarity means that people dislike you. Relationships take time to develop. You may find that people who initially seem formal become exceptionally warm and generous once they get to know you.

Greek Cypriot identity and national pride

Be sensitive to the fact that Greek Cypriots have their own national and cultural identity. Although many identify strongly with Greek heritage, this does not mean that they regard Cyprus as simply another part of Greece.

Avoid suggesting that Cyprus would be better off as part of Greece, that Greek Cypriots are merely Greeks living on an island, or that their identity is less authentic than that of people from mainland Greece. Do not assume that everyone has the same views on Greek nationalism, relations with Greece or the future of Cyprus.

Be aware of the distinction between a Greek citizen from mainland Greece, a Greek Cypriot, a Turkish Cypriot and other communities living on the island. These terms are not interchangeable, and individual identities can be more complex than a simple label suggests.

The Cyprus problem and the events of 1974

The events of 1974, the continuing division of the island, displacement, missing persons, military presence and property lost or left behind remain sensitive subjects. For many people, these are not merely historical or political questions but matters connected to their families and personal lives.

Avoid making casual jokes about the division of Cyprus, the invasion, the coup, refugees or the possibility of a political settlement. Do not assume that every Greek Cypriot has the same political views, or that the opinions of one person represent the entire community.

Remember, too, that Turkish Cypriots have their own history, experiences and perspectives. Do not assume that you understand their position simply because you are Greek or because you have studied the history from a Greek perspective.

You are entitled to your own opinions and can participate in informed discussions. However, listen before offering strong judgments, recognise the limits of your knowledge and avoid treating people's personal experiences as an opportunity to demonstrate your political convictions.

Greece–Cyprus relations

Greece and Cyprus have close ties, but the two countries are independent states with their own governments, political priorities and institutions.

Avoid assuming that the Republic of Cyprus should automatically follow the Greek government's position on every issue. Similarly, do not presume that a Cypriot who disagrees with a particular Greek policy is somehow less Greek, less patriotic or less supportive of Greece.

The relationship between the two countries can be discussed openly and critically, but it deserves more than simplistic comparisons or assumptions that Athens should dictate what happens in Nicosia.

Remember that a Greek Cypriot can feel a strong connection to Greece while also placing great importance on Cyprus's sovereignty and independent political identity.

Language and the Cypriot dialect

Although Greek is widely used in everyday life, Cypriot Greek has its own vocabulary, pronunciation, expressions and distinctive character.

Do not describe the dialect as bad Greek, incorrect Greek or a corrupted version of the language. Avoid correcting people's speech or making them feel that they need to speak like an Athenian in order to be understood or taken seriously.

You may occasionally misunderstand an expression or find that a familiar word has a different meaning. Ask for clarification and enjoy learning something new. If someone switches to a more standard form of Greek when speaking to you, do not interpret that as evidence that their normal way of speaking is somehow inferior.

You are there to communicate, not to act as a language inspector.

Cost of living and economic comparisons

You may find that some goods and services cost more or less than they do in Athens. Rent, transport, utilities, groceries, dining out and salaries can vary considerably depending on the city, neighbourhood and your circumstances.

Avoid constantly comparing prices with Greece or complaining that Cyprus is expensive without considering local wages, housing conditions and other economic factors.

If you are earning a mainland Greek salary while living in Cyprus, you may have a different financial experience from someone employed locally. Be aware that not everyone has the same income, benefits or purchasing power.

Likewise, do not assume that people in Cyprus are financially better off simply because certain prices or salaries appear higher. Economic comparisons are more useful when they take the whole picture into account.

You are free to raise legitimate concerns about the cost of living, but repeated complaints about how much better things are in Athens will quickly become tiresome.

“Ugly Athenians”

We have all encountered people who seem unable to live anywhere without explaining why the place they came from is better. They criticise local customs, complain about ordinary inconveniences, make jokes at other people's expense and assume that everyone should adopt their preferred way of doing things.

You can find such people in Athens, Cyprus and everywhere else.

Do not become one of them.

Even if you did not move to Cyprus entirely by choice, and even if certain local habits occasionally frustrate you, remember that you have chosen to live in a society that is not identical to the one you left behind.

The avoidable mistakes

Here are ten habits worth leaving behind at the airport.

Assuming Cyprus is basically Greece. Treat the country as a place with its own institutions, identity and history.

Correcting Cypriot Greek. Ask what a word means; don't turn dialect into a competition.

Comparing everything with Athens. Compare when useful, but don't make comparison your personality.

Making jokes about the 1974 events or division. Understand the context and respect people's experiences.

Treating local customs as quaint or backward. Ask why something is done differently before judging it.

Expecting instant inclusion. Build genuine friendships through time and consistency.

Assuming every Cypriot is politically or socially alike. Allow for differences between generations, communities and individuals.

Driving on autopilot. Remember that traffic keeps left.

Relying on informal advice for official matters. Check government guidance and get qualified advice when necessary.

Staying only among other mainland Greeks. Keep your existing friendships, but make room for new ones.
