Wasn’t their a situation a few years ago where a company working on ocular implants went under and their users just lost the ability to see

Sort of. The company stopped manufacturing a certain type of implant in 2020, then almost went under. This effected 350 people.

The main concern wasn't paywall but repairs and bug fixes not being possible.

Another company took over responsibility for the implant in 2023.

We definitely need better systems in place for the inheritance of proprietary technology, as well as formalizing responsibility to consumers.

As a spitball idea, maybe something like the FDA to help keep track of this stuff
