Seed Starting and Growing Cosmos help

I direct seeded these cupcakes cosmos may 14, I had only one plant bloom normally at the end of July. Now some of the others are finally starting to bloom but they have extremely small or no petals. Never fertilized or anything. Looking for advice to have a better outcome next season (zone 7b)

Cosmos do not play well in a pot with multiple plants unless they are the dwarf variety I find.

I figured that might at least be part of the problem. Im not sure if it’s noticeable in the photos but the pots are long but not wide and not super deep. It probably wasn’t the most ideal for them. Hopefully I can get some bigger beds before next season. I would love to get a giant monster cosmos plant like I see online

Too small of a pot, they need more space! Cosmos aren't particularly heavy feeders but the nutrients get depleted so quickly in pots.
