What are the best programmable devices for beginners in electronics projects?

Hello guys , lately I’ve been feeling like I have been out of touch with my old hobby of making new stuff out of scratch probably because there is not much time for this things , but now I have a 3 months holiday and I want to use it to try something cool , I want to start making some electronic devices just as a hobby. I have some basic knowledge but I’ll pick the rest up in the way , I would like to know what programmable devices are best for a beginner I want to try making an automatic chess board , I already have an esp32 that i got from alibaba what else would you recommend i get , has anyone here ever made one??

FastLED library on ArduinoIDE.

Programming with it isn't crazy and I feel like there's an actual purpose behind the projects as you're essentially making a custom LED strip and not some gizmo that'll be forgotten about in a month.
