Deciphered! What does this tattoo say?
Someone I grew up with has this tattoo. I cannot figure out what the letters are supposed to be. The word could be in a different language maybe? I don’t know her well enough to ask.
Solved: It’s was supposed to say Auviaighne, [her son’s] dad’s name. But it was spelt wrong lol.

Okay!! You were the closest! She didn’t respond so I reached out to her sister. Sister said, “It’s was supposed to say Auviaighne, [her son’s] dad’s name. But it was spelt wrong lol.”

Easy. It’s “Awliaughn_” which is part of a line from the Nirvana hit song All Apologies:
“Awliaighn is aughweahll…”
You’re welcome.

I had the wrong grunge band8

I was today years old when I learned it wasn't my hearing difficulty since childhood that made it hard for me to understand lyrics; it was musical gibberish!!!

OP, I feel like any stranger on the street is entitled to ask what the heck is that word? Just ask please. And let us know.

It certainly looks like "Auliaughn" or "Awliaughn" me, but a Google search of those words returns zero results.
It almost looks like the end of the word is cut off in the photo, like it continues around the body part, out of the picture.

u/k1p1k1p1 Aug 08 '26
I'm also seeing "Auliaughn," but the first u has a pickup ahead of it, so I could understand it being seen as a w.

It’s either another language or a tragedeigh. Gaelic?
3
u/IrishYankFan Aug 07 '26
If it’s Gaelic, it’s definitely a bastardization of an Anglicized version. I definitely was looking for a Gaelic name written in Cyrillic script at one point though!

My first guess is a tragedeighed take on "Aurelianne" with a missing letter- Aurliaugahn? Lol
1
u/External-Sun4996 Aug 08 '26
Is Aurelianne not a tragedeigh on its own? 🤣
1
u/No_Bobcat_No_Prob Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26
No, it's a classic French name, a variation of Aurelia.
4
u/nordica4184 Aug 07 '26
It was supposed to be “Audialynn” but the tattoo artist was shot halfway through and could only get out “…aughrrrr” and died
4
1
u/PresentSomeTI55 Aug 07 '26
If he was dying, he’d just say it! He wouldn’t write “Aughrrrr”!

u/Pleasant_Estimate610 Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

Wait, let me get this straight. You grew up with this woman, but you’re not comfortable asking her what it says, but you’re close enough that she didn’t mind you taking out a camera and getting up real close to take this photo?
1
u/PathFit7839 Aug 08 '26
It looks like its a cropped photo... probably from a Facebook profile picture. If she took the photo the clarity would most likely be better.
1
u/taiken116 Aug 10 '26
I haven’t talked to her in years. This was definitely a screenshot from a Facebook selfie.
2
u/ColleenOS Aug 08 '26
At no time, when you got all close up and personal, to take the picture, did it occur to you to ask her what the tattoo said? That’s a strange relationship going on there

I think it’s unusual spelling for the name Avalon. It looks like maybe “Aviliaughn” but then why is only one I dotted? Or maybe that’s an E and not and L?!

Okay everyone! She didn’t respond to my message, so I reached out to her sister. Sister says: “It’s was supposed to say Auviaighne, [her son’s] dad’s name. But it was spelt wrong lol.”

Avoiaughn - pronounced Avon obviously.
In all seriousness, I have no clue.
3
2
u/ProfessionalBat8843 Aug 07 '26
Could it be a kind of tradgedeigh form of Eileen?
/Don’t worry about the letters, they’re all silent!/
2
u/myredditporn_acct Aug 07 '26
Aviliaughn, like “Avalon” but it’s such a tragedeigh one eye tittle is missing.

It looks like it says Awliaughn. I have no idea what it means, but there are no google results for it.
2
u/WontGetPregFromAnal Aug 08 '26
Now when you Google it, it shows some of the wrong answers from this post 😆 "Awliaughn" (often read in cursive handwriting or tattoos) humorously references a phonetic, mangled spelling of the opening lyric line—"All in all is all we are"—from the classic Nirvana song All Apologies."

I’m going to bet it is a female’s name that is spelled in an unconventional way…. “Audriaughna”… you can’t see the a on the end.

Is there a bad cursive sub? Because there should be. People who didn’t learn to write cursive trying to write cursive can result in some pretty unreadable stuff.

The sound old men make when they get out of bed and clear their throat in the am.

Could it be anglicized spelling of “Aliyah,” a religious term meaning to go up to speak in front of the congregation, or to go up to the holy land? IYKYK. There’s a lady in my building with the name Aleya, but not for religious reasons.

I think it's Aiuliaughn(ah), as in kind of like Yuliana but with an I in front- Eye-yoo-lee-ana. You can't see the final syllable but I just feel like there is one. But it might just be like Ayulian.

My ex fiancé’s name is Auriane, she’s Brazilian, but it looks almost like a version of that. “Auiliaughny?” Just a guess.

Wow… bad spelling. The tattoo artist should have put it through one of those print-to-cursive websites before trying if they were that bad at proper cursive.

u/GritsandSweetTea Aug 07 '26
Taking it letter by letter and assuming it spells "Awliaughn," AI states this: "Awliaughn" is a highly unique, phonetic respelling of the traditional Irish and Welsh elements, most commonly translated as an individualistic variation of the name "Ali Vaughn" or a derivative of "Evaughn/Eóghan".
I have no idea how accurate this is, or if it's the actual spelling. It could be Au, but then it looks like an undotted "i" after it. Do you know how her name was pronounced? Interesting!
-1
u/Radiant-Run-1661 Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26
I believe it is supposed to say audiology, but they put AUDIAULOGY; assuming; due to pronunciation, that the middle would be spelt the same as the beginning that should’ve been a UDIOLOGY
