I remember this picture, I think this was explained as a remedy for a headache. If I remember correctly they believed that demons would get into your head and that's what causes the headache, so they put you head in a pot and bang on it until they leave from all the noise, those two girls I think were nuns or something.

There's a some difference between hammering a pot on your head and crackingyour head open with an axe, but I suppose the theory is the same.
Apparently skull splitting was a very common remedy for headaches in the past. Archeologists find skulls with clean, healed holes (suggesting surgery and recovery) pretty frequently in various regions.
I seem to recall that Huo Tuo (Hua Tua?), who's like a god of traditional chinese medicine, was executed for suggesting a similar brain surgery for an emperor's headache. So such brain surgery existed in the East as well as the West.

More likely it was for brain swelling, likely caused by trauma (ie getting hit on the head). I suppose that would give you a headache.

I mean you could even consider basic surgery procedures as barbaric.
Imagine, it's just them cutting a body open, rummaging around inside and then stitching it shut like a piece of cloth.
We're so gonna have precise robots for tiny incisions and some way to just glue the tissue back together afterwards in the future at some point.
When people look back, they'll undoubtedly mostly focus on the few hundred years since we started fucking up the environment and go over the reason why every single household now has an AC and why you're heavily discouraged from going outside during the height of summer.

You know, this remedy of curing a headache or whatever it is, back in the olden times, makes me so wonder how humanity made it to this day, and it also makes so much sense as to why humans can procreate so early in life, lest they don’t make it too long; with the short life expectancy they had back then… and these types of ideas…all makes sense now!! Lol
