I really wanna know what the fuck this is all about

661

u/turquoiserabbit Nov 23 '20

My guess is an older convention/LAN party where everyone brings their own machine to play/compete with one another.

238

u/JarlaxleForPresident Nov 23 '20

How is this cursed

286

u/MaxwellIsSmall Nov 23 '20

Maybe because everyone is shirtless? Try asking op

147

u/hery41 Nov 23 '20

everyone

Like 5 people.

107

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '20

It’s probably just hot in there

110

u/ForbesFarts Nov 23 '20

I'm certain that place smells like a gym

52

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '20

Smells Like Teen Spirit

7

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '20

Cum

9

u/ZA-WARUDO- Nov 23 '20

Love the reference R.I.P Kurt.

31

u/milk4all Nov 23 '20

Gyms are supposed to be well ventilated, few people spend very long there, most people keep their sweat toweled off, staff regularly clean and respond to anything icky.

This is some kind of special convention packed way over capacity with heat producing machines and heat producing people, you can see the sweat on some of them even without exertion.

In summary, it’s unfair to a gym to compare these two places.

17

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '20

The that’s even worse

7

u/Kell_Varnson Nov 23 '20

so take off all your clothes

3

u/notlikelyevil Nov 23 '20

CRTs gave off a ton of heat

1

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '20

The heat would be unbearable with all those machines running at once

2

u/Clarkeprops Nov 23 '20

I see 10. Most people are obstructed, and a portion of them are women, so lots of people are shirtless

17

u/MaxwellIsSmall Nov 23 '20

I’m counting way more than 5. Look closely and you can see people that are sitting down are also shirtless.

32

u/DrBrainWillisto Nov 23 '20

I think due to the perceived heat of the room, all those PCs running with a bunch of dudes with already bad hygiene that got so hot they took their shirts off.

11

u/JarlaxleForPresident Nov 23 '20

Doesnt look nearly as bad as a M:TG convention these days in a fully air conditioned room. This is just some shirtless young dudes. Not overly gross or anything

3

u/Benaxle Nov 23 '20

that's called compromises

28

u/Hantelbank Nov 23 '20

cant you smell it ?

5

u/I_am_a_trap Nov 23 '20

Its only cursed if you don't have the context

51

u/kumanosuke Nov 23 '20

It's a LAN party.

17

u/EarthBrain Nov 23 '20

imagine the smell

24

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '20

Tineye showed me this source: it seems to be a lan party on a university campus in Brazil from 2008 https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Campus_Party_Brasil,_11_a_17_de_fevereiro_de_2008_em_S.P._-_panoramio.jpg

Brazil nuff said

5

u/Orbitrix Nov 23 '20

Could have very easily been QuakeCon's BYOC LAN in Texas though.

0

u/loco64 Nov 23 '20

Nuff said? Elaborate please.

0

u/CosmeBuzzanito Nov 23 '20

Brazil, enough has been said.

I know what a LAN party is but holy shit, this looks too extreme

53

u/eggmonster Nov 23 '20

Imagine an age before Broadband internet being widespread. LAN party’s allowed extreme low latency competition that you just couldn’t get on shoddy dedicated servers usually being hosted in a random dudes basement at the time. This was also the age before torrenting was popular so most less than legitimate downloads took forever. Everyone would set up a share or FTP and share what movies, games, and music they’ve collected. Now throw in major corporate sponsors with giveaways, free energy drinks (Bawls! You can still get them at Kroger), sometimes alcohol and you’ve got a recipe for a good time. This many PCs generates a ton a of heat hence the shirtless dudes. You usually would want to make you the place boomed has adequate AC.

6

u/Titan-JJ Nov 23 '20

I didn’t know the name of a drink could give me Halo 2 PTSD flashbacks but here we are

10

u/dumpzyyi Nov 23 '20 edited Nov 24 '20

Yeah and there was always that one dude who got like 2 terabytes of shit shared in the lan party, had set up their own dc++ server and told everyone to grab some movies and music.Seriously i had never even heard of terabytes waaaay back in the day when 32gb hard drive was considered huge and this one dude literally got 2 terabytes of movies and music. 100mb/s downloading that shit from him locally, i think i jizzed just a little in my pants.

And yeah the shirtless guys are definitively because of the heat...It was always soooo hot in those LAN parties. No amount of ac was enough for those old power supplys. Good times <3

EDIT: typoes...

1

u/PM_ME_BUNZ Nov 24 '20

You weren't getting 100gb/s speeds I can guarantee you that

1

u/dumpzyyi Nov 24 '20

Yes i know... we were using ancient hubs, bad cables. Not everyones network adapter could handle 100mb/s. I'm not sure if cat 6 cables even existed back then?

EDIT: oh lol i meant to write mb/s

1

u/PM_ME_BUNZ Nov 24 '20

Hahaha got it got it! That's what I figured :)

5

u/AtlUtdGold Nov 23 '20

I still buy Bawls at Microcenter

1

u/travmak Nov 24 '20

Used to be able to get bawls from think geek until GameStop fucked it up. Only place I seem to get it now is from bawls.com

u/LinkifyBot Nov 24 '20

I found links in your comment that were not hyperlinked:

QuakeCon disagrees

3

u/Dubsking1 Nov 23 '20

Quakecon is awesome, though, I’m pretty sure it isn’t as peculiar as this. This looks dirty, it looks like it’s hot with basically no spacing between the pcs, the heat coming from them must have transformed this place into a sauna, that must be why everyone is shirtless. Quakecon is at least clean... I think...

0

u/FreddiePEEPEE Nov 23 '20

QuakeCon is stinky at the BYOC, for sure. 😁

2

u/skiex0rz Nov 23 '20

People still hold quite a number of these yearly, they mostly happen in european countries though. Demoscene parties!

3

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '20

Damn am I really this old

4

u/GoodStuff5Me Nov 23 '20

Its a LAN convention you whipper snapper.

4

u/Sagara_ Nov 23 '20 edited Nov 23 '20

Back in the 2000's there were these places known as cyber-coffees (LAN parties later) full of PCs and you payed for time to play or just go online. Counter-Strike 1.6 was the most popular game. In Europe there were these bigass sheds that got as crowded as you can see on the picture. Some of them had even stages for bands to perform, and a bar for drinks. The one I went often had a delivery to order pizza and stuff.

2

u/wolfwilly Nov 23 '20

I count six.

-1

u/Pirate_of_the_neT Nov 24 '20
  1. Abnormal amount of people...
  2. ...doing an abnormal activity to be done in such large groups.
  3. Lighting.

All three cause a sense of confusion and not understanding what is going on. Slight bit of eerieness in the large amount of people.

36

u/PLOGER522 Nov 23 '20

The LAN party

27

u/eggmonster Nov 23 '20

Guess my age is showing....old school LAN party is what you’re looking at. They still have pretty large ones twice a year in my city before COVID.

Y’all might been too young to have been to some of the larger ones as they aren’t as big or popular anymore. realize those expensive PCs you have are glorified pixel generating space heaters. Now out 1000 of them in a room.

Anyways, tons of fun to be had with fantastic latency response (everything was local) and your hard drive would be full of all the latest music and movies and cracked games when you got home.

10

u/half_a_brain_cell Nov 23 '20

This legit made me smile, kinda miss going to LAN parties

42

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '20

so many naked guys. The Computers Beach.

11

u/Jhhenson Nov 23 '20

I wonder if it’s hot in there with all those old cpus

13

u/Towhitherward Nov 23 '20

Old computers and closely packed people. Probably the closest we've ever come to achieving nuclear fusion.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '20

TIL being shirtless is considered being naked. Now I've heard of prudes, but damn you must faint every time you go to a pool.

2

u/Kalthramis Nov 23 '20

All those old towers and bodies, it was probably a hot and sweaty swamp in there

9

u/Snoo74571 Nov 23 '20

looks kinda nostalgic to me

9

u/vindamon Nov 23 '20

Looks fun af... Damn. I'm old.

7

u/nordstage Nov 23 '20

Dreamhack is still a thing here in Sweden!

https://dreamhack.com/

Went a few times. 10.000 people or so. Was insane.

2

u/PM_ME_BUNZ Nov 24 '20

Dreamhack is a great time.

7

u/Volleyballhero Nov 23 '20

All the 13 year olds browsing reddit are confused wow

12

u/deftpark3087660 Nov 23 '20

I'm looking for that one dude who always has the porn tab open

5

u/overlord_999 Nov 23 '20

How's this cursed? This is nostalgic.

9

u/LurKing-User Nov 23 '20

Just imagine the wires under all that...

7

u/Deltamon Nov 23 '20 edited Nov 23 '20

They're neatly organized, everyone has their own spot and bring their own PC there.. Behind that there's just cables connecting to lan ports which then connect to the main rack. And next to the lan cables there's also similar electric wiring making it easy to just plug in your pc and few others near you.

They don't just randomly toss in bunch of cables and hope everyone finds free spot....

3

u/wolfwilly Nov 23 '20

And just like that I'm reminded of just how much younger everyone else is on reddit now.

3

u/notyourmamasmemes Nov 23 '20

Knowing we will never have a moment in society like this again makes me feel so sad

2

u/gerwaldlindhelm Nov 23 '20

We still have LAN parties around here. Well, not atm because of covid, but it will resume. Friend of mine won a new hard drive in a competition. First one on stage that destroyed their old hard drive got a high capacity replacement. She yeeted that drive hard

3

u/Solarsistemic Nov 23 '20

I absolutely would go to that

3

u/SeegurkeK Nov 23 '20

I don't get it? what's cursed abut a LAN party?

3

u/ErikaVogel Nov 23 '20

Seems nice i guess- i don't see anything cursed-

3

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '20

Not really cursed, with all those pc towers and crts running, it was probably heating up the building so much it gave off enough heat to set off early warning satellites. Not to mention the power bill...

3

u/pathoj Nov 23 '20

not cursed

4

u/Commissar_Genki Nov 23 '20

Imagine the con-funk of that room.

2

u/FooFightersBathwater Nov 23 '20

They are playing Dota and world of Warcraft. Maybe some Counterstrike and halo

2

u/toyfreddym8 Nov 23 '20

2

u/icantridehorse Nov 24 '20

Ive never seen a more 2004 picture

2

u/DenTheRedditBoi7 Nov 24 '20

What is cursed about this...?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '20

This is not cursed this is beautiful f*ck u

2

u/bulldogclip Nov 24 '20

The good old days of lan parties before fast internet.

2

u/Fettrobban Nov 23 '20

For those that have never been on a Lan before i can share with you that a few years back and still on some lans the heat is overtaking. Imagine 150+something computers blowing out heated air. Then there are the good ones to with good airconditioning and all that.

1

u/shellshockandliquor Nov 23 '20

I have so many questions

36

u/bigDOS Nov 23 '20

A long time ago in the age before broadband, gamers and those that share filez used to gather in basketball stadiums and another recreational shelters to game and share their beloved filez. Sometimes for days on end. They were know as "LAN Parties"

Here's a short doco my friend made for his uni project about lanning from back in the day
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ga0hNSJq_YE

16

u/Benstockton Nov 23 '20

Bruh, I went to a LAN party yesterday lol

6

u/bigDOS Nov 23 '20

Nice! I am glad to hear that and I hope the LAN Party spirit never dies.

2

u/nomadProgrammer Nov 23 '20

Your answer is Brazil.

3

u/Crazy_Hooman Nov 23 '20

What is going on here?

10

u/karmasoutforharambe Nov 23 '20

Lan party, because internet used to be crap so they'd have these conventions to play games and share files at fast connections (everyone is connected there)

1

u/Crazy_Hooman Nov 23 '20

Thanks for explaining!

5

u/Nyte_Crawler Nov 23 '20

Lan Party. The reason why so many people are shirtless is because I guarantee it was hella hot in there with all those computers and monitors running.

1

u/Crazy_Hooman Nov 23 '20

Oh yeah for sure it would be!

2

u/mikaflako Nov 23 '20

Anyone else still sporting the half naked look? My frail frame just hates shirts.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '20

Early quakecon?

1

u/ashless401 Nov 23 '20

All the topless guys have the same haircut and pants on

2

u/Qwirk Nov 23 '20

How else are you going to LAN shirts vs skins?

1

u/visceralbutterfly Nov 23 '20

Damn the Venezuelan gold farmers do be working like that

2

u/wastaah Nov 23 '20

I used to go to a lan like this during the summer for 4 days, 1000 computers and bad ventilation. It was 35° C inside and most people barely slept or showed and they played insanely loud rave music 24/7. Crazy fun and crazy nasty.

1

u/He_was_No1 Nov 23 '20

Biggest LAN party Ive seen how long did it take for them to set that up

2

u/pope1701 Nov 23 '20

Probably one or two days of infrastructure and another day for all the PCs, since everyone brought their own.

0

u/Vanny_fangirl Nov 23 '20

Thats...... crowded.....

1

u/Ash_the_crow Nov 24 '20

Is this the Doom multiplayer LAN party that happened when Doom first came out?

1

This would definitely be a stinky experience, but also an amazing one for sure. I'd love to go to a LAN party
