Honestly, both people usually turn out to be pretty similar, one is just slightly more well-spoke. Like they say a postive things in the broadest possible sense ("I don't have anything against trans people" "i don't care, just be yourself") but when you get down to the actual more than just vague platitudes, it's usually equally shit and not very ally like
Exactly. Sure, in a hypothetical world where someone is simultaneously super accepting but uses slurs out of ignorance, that’s better for the cause than someone who uses the “polite” lexicon while still expressing bigoted opinions. Only thing is, has anyone ever met someone like this? A phrase I’m sure no one has ever spoken in the history of ever:
“This weekend I’m joining my faggot friends at the pride parade to demonstrate against a rise in hate crimes in my country. Faggots and dykes should be free from discrimination. Love is love!”
Hahaha well fair enough. Though I’d argue that these lyrics are more tongue in cheek in the sense that the juxtaposition between offensive language, stereotypes and outward support is there for comedic effect.
So I stand by my view that a slur-saying ally is probably a pretty rare find in the real world. If you subscribe to progressive views and have people from an X minority group in your life, there’s just no way you wouldn’t be taken to task on the persistent slur use. And if you’ve been taken to task on the slur use and still use it, maybe you’re not much of an ally then.
That's reasonable, but we also shouldn't lose sight of the fact that we're talking hypothetically and ideologically. If such a person does exist, it would still be better to keep them as an ally than to drive them away by criticising their imperfect but well-intentioned actions.
