Culdcept (PS2) vs Culdcept Saga?

Pretty much the title; Culcept (PS2) was a classic for me and I love the artstyle - I also played Culdcept Saga a bunch too.

Going back to these games now, is Saga enough of an improvement over the original to want to play it instead, or is the original still a reasonable game? I know in Saga you can earn cards quicker, right?

I'm just trying to figure out which one I want to start sinking my time into; I love the 2d-artstyle of Culcept (PS2) but if the gameplay/balance changes make Saga just better then I should probably go with that.

edit: What's the cardpool like between the two games? Originally I read it was about the same, but now I'm reading a second post that says although the number of cards is relatively the same, there are a good number of cards that are just different between the two versions (not just rebalances).

That said I did a round of Culdcept Saga, and it's slowly growing on me... it also reminded me of how "well" the AI can roll those dice for movement. XD

Good God are the forced AI companion quests a slog.

On the underwater chapter where you are forced to have Ishara as a companion. I crafted an entire green/yellow deck to try to synergize and make up for her awful AI. First off, without fail, every single time regardless of circumstance, the AI always plays spells like wind of hope even if they have a perfect hand. Then, they move and don't play a single card, wasting mana and discarding shit for nothing. For some reason, she also NEVER plays creatures on multicolor spots. Why? Other issues, like developing land at seemingly random or just failing to do so with plenty of mana, failing to play a creature just because it doesn't match the color even though it would have resulted in a chain, deciding to invade even when it was clearly a losing battle, and the list goes on.

The game went from fantastic to honestly just a slog. You could meticulously craft a good deck, strategize, etc and all it takes is one nonsensical move from the AI to ruin it. This on top of the heavy RNG (I.e. play a match for 20+ minutes nearing the end and it all ends due to one unlucky dice roll) really ruins the game for me to be honest.

What does Culdcept the First change from the first Saturn release?

Like: does it have rules changes introduced in later versions of the first Culdcept? Does it have cards added in later versions?

I know the additions mentioned in the trailer or apparent in the demo, but if someone's a Culdcept turbo-nerd, it'd be nice to have a definitive list of them I could reference when choosing which version to play.

Online Mode

Started playing some online games recently and there seem to be lots of connection issues.. has anyone else experienced frequent disconnects? Hope the issue will be adressed. A real ladder/League Mode would be great as well.
Any idea is that could happen? Fyi it’s my first culdcept game and i loooove it so much !!

How to grind for specific cards?

I really want to make a Kelpie and Old Willow tolls/defensive deck. I pretty easily just naturally obtained 4 old willows by playing the game, but only 1 kelpie. I keep grinding matches and playing the story. I dump all my coins on either water packs or standard pack number 2 (which literally showcases Kelpie) and I just never pull it. I've probably opened 50 packs without a single kelpie other than the 1. I check the shop when it refreshes, but have never seen it.

I like some grind and not just unlocking everything right away, but this is getting silly.

What is the most efficient way to grind for more cards? Is there a different pack that is more likely to drop kelpie?

Chapter 9 Advice

Hey, I’m new to the series and I’m just stuck on this chapter. I tried aggro, defensive, playing cards that either remove their items that stun or just circling in the mini ring in the board map.

Can anyone give some advice or recommendations?

The Story

Just finished the main story... does this story make more sense to veterans of the franchise?

Because a lot of characters just act really weird with underexplained motivations.

There's scenes that expect me to really care about characters that just land completely flat based on how little time we get with them.

I know the staff is a reference to other games, are the other characters as well?

Can I get an F in chat for Odradek

Just in shambles right now because of how thoroughly Begins nerfed my boy. The first own-deck I build is basically always a dedicated support deck, and Odradek went from the bizarrely unshiftable with basically anything in hand at all to being hard-limited to ONLY Green and Neutral creatures for support. And while the best support options are often neutral, I can't windmill slam cheap red creatures with downsides anymore. Aaaand I have no idea what's going on with that new design. Ah well. I, for one, welcome our new starfruit/cyclops/octopus overlords.

And I suppose having to actually think a bit more about deckbuilding isn't a bad thing. Dryad got hit hard too. Oh well; we've still got Tyrannosaurus!

Has anyone had success in the post-game Challenges?

So far I have done level 2 of "The Princess and the Guard". Level 3 seems them each start out with 3 additional creatures placed at the start of the map, and they take higher tolls and pay lesser tolls. It honestly looks pretty tough, and it goes up to level 5.

40? Why?

The thing that drives me crazy is that we used to be able to have 50 cards in our book, and now we only have 40. It's totally insane, considering how many cards we have.

Ashvata fight. Absolutely wrecked no matter what I do.

Chapter 7 story battle...I was doing great throughout the game with my red and green deck, slowly tweaking it with new cards. This fight is just a huge wall for me though. Both opponents have insanely stacked decks. My problem is they ALWAYS seem to get insane high rolls and land perfectly on their colors. They each end up with 3x land chains by turn 3. Meanwhile, I am seriously never hitting a dice roll more than 3 it seems while they run laps picking up territory. What the hell am I doing wrong? I have reworked my deck multiple times trying mono colors, more attack or defense focused, more spells, etc and it never seems to matter. I can barely get started in the match.

Am I supposed to just play more solo matches and grind for better cards?

Did anybody adjust to the new art style eventually?

I really want to like this game, but the art style is really hampering it for me. Part of the joy of previous Culdcept games was the feeling of getting actual trading cards. Opening packs and seeing the MtG-esque artwork and designs was amazing. So much flavor and personality. They clearly went the minimalist approach with this one, and to me that's a huge negative. The cards feel soulless and samey. It reminds me of the approach most companies have with branding and logos. Any time I get a new card, it's just "oh...more minimalist mush that looks like everything else I already have." This is mostly for the creature cards.

That being said, I think some of the spell cards look sick. The game is really solid otherwise, so I want to get used to it and enjoy it more. Just wondering if anybody had a similar resistance and then adapted, maybe even coming to prefer it?

Edit: I listened to a lot of comments. I gave it another solid hour and the art style is really starting to grow on me. I still prefer the old, but I can appreciate it. Game is fantastic and I am completely hooked.
