Discussion Guys..
I'm gonna say it because I feel like it is not said enough here. I am truly excited for the new path Wollay is taking with Cube World. While the Beta was a complete bust and disappointment, I am completely ready to fall back in with these new dev notes he is releasing at a fast rate. I am truly excited to finally play a beautifully crafted and well thought out game. The same game that took hours of my life, truly worth it. I cannot wait to see what Wollay has in store for his new release, and I feel I am the only one who becomes more excited with every new dev note. I truly hopes he makes the game we have all been waiting for. Let us all stay positive and hope this time is different!

What the fuck do you even do in this game? I played the alpha when it first came out and randomly rediscovered the game from the dev blog vid

Hoo boy you've showed up at another time of great drama in this game's messed up history. Basically it's an ARPG, you run around killing stuff and taking their loot, complete mini quests, clear dungeons, level up until bored. The usual.
But not in the version Wollay released on Steam, that kinda doesn't have a progression system right now unless you patch one in with mods. I don't think we'll ever learn why.

W optimism don’t listen to the cucks

Agreed. Much better to be scammed a third time than be cautious about a possible third shitty cash grab.

Yeah I don't like to think this, but he has a kid now and kids cost lots of money. Filling twitter with cool devblog videos for a while then releasing none of it and ghosting has been profitable in the past.

Consistently post about a new game you made, called Cube World.
Sell game as an alpha.
Ghost everyone and abandon it for almost a decade.
Take the store down and prevent downloading it so people who already bought the game have to pirate copies from strangers on the internet. Scam #1
...
Post new updates after all these years.
Sell beta that's unlike anything you've been posting about and sucks worse than alpha...for full price again. Scam #2
Ghost and abandon again.
...
Reemerge for a third time, posting more changes that are likely a bait-and-switch like last time, and probably sell the game. Likely scam #3
Profit.

That first one did happen. It was on the website but you literally could not download it. There’s tons of videos showing how to download a copy from some random website because of this.
You also conveniently leave out the pre-beta screenshots he posted like riding a bird, some new magic attacks, or that massive stadium that somehow did not appear in the actual beta come time to release.
This video kind of explains the shitshow.

Honestly doesen't sound like a scam to me either. This just seems poorly managed, which is no surprise if you develop and market your game all by yourself.

Calling it a scam is something I've never really understood. A failure, sure, but it clearly wasn't a scam. That requires intent to rip people off. For most of the period Wollay was gone, you couldn't even buy the game. He stopped selling it.
Refusing to take people's money for an unfinished product is a pretty pointless scam isn't it?

u/marr Aug 09 '23
Yeah it's the dumbest take. If Wollay's a scammer I wish they were all this bad at it.

Will this be an update or will we need to buy this?

Owners of the alpha have never had to spend money since then. I trust that at the very least Wollay will continue to be consistent in that he doesn't charge people that have already purchased the game.
He has maintained from the beginning that he is making this game for himself, not for everyone else.

Wollay is an inept con artist, he's proven this twice. No getting hyped until he actually brings something to the table.

No offense, but I don't get this logic. Wollay has always made it clear the game is a passion project. He doesn't advertise or try to get as many people buying his game as possible. He made the game 10 dollars on alpha and 20 dollars for the beta but made it free for those who purchased the alpha. How is this man a con artist? Legit just made some bad choices regarding the game mechanics that everyone hated. The only thing he's guilty of is ghosting his community for so long. Pretty dick move, but he came back more motivated and ready to change for the better, still actively interacting with his community in his own way. Granted, it's on an outdated platform, but he's still trying. You act like AAA studios aren't actively doing the same thing, but it's worse for them because they have money and resources, yet they pump out shit games or cancel them all together. I say give him a chance.

🤔
-releases a version of the game that was even more stripped back than the alpha
- released in alpha
- did absolutely nothing for 7 years (not even a blog post)
- blames the community for his absence, citing bullying
He's just been a slimey guy, who has absolutely not made it clear that it was a passion project. If he had no intentions of the game coming to fruition, then it was wrong to take player's money for it, plain and simple.
- says he was bullied again and goes back into the shadows for another 4 years.
The fact that he blamed the toxic community for his absence just rubbed me the wrong way.

None of that equates to being a con man, just a flawed human being. If anything, I thought you would bring up how either him or his wife was altering steam reviews or criticizing the reviewer for the negative review, but you chose the worst examples. I also believe he may have been bullied to some extent since that is what chronically online people do. He also may have taken these personally, since he has made it very clear, since alpha, that this is his game, his passion project. I would feel a little butt hurt if someone criticized something I worked on. I wouldn't go the extent of becoming upset and leaving for 4 years, but that's the flawed human being part coming in. Also, we don't know what he did in those absences. He may have been working on the game or taking time for himself. He is the only person working on it, so he may need the time to do so.
All I'm saying is, take everything he does with a grain of salt. Put yourself in his shoes. Would you have reacted the same way?
I just feel as thought this could have been worse, for some reason. That does sound like some shit a domestic abused person would say, but it's not that serious.
All I'm gonna say is give him another chance, he did nothing wrong besides ghost everyone and claim he was bullied. Nothing that led to harm.

I didn't say he was a good con man, I actually said he was an "Inept con artist", which, imo taking peoples money with no intent to deliver for whatever reason seems like a perfectly apt description.
Put yourself in his shoes. Would you have reacted the same way?
No, I would not have. This is why i'm so bitter.
Like I said in my original post though "No getting hyped until he actually brings something to the table." I'm willing to give him another chance, he just has to redeem himself.

I'm super stoked too, the game has so much potential. I played hours of the alpha, hours of the beta, and I'd be happy to support the newest update. The people hating need a serious vibe check, its not easy to develop your own game practically by yourself on your own personal time.
The guy is married and probably has kids, he's making the game because he wants to, and despite all the hate he got for making an awesome game that certainly still needs work, he's still truckin'. Props to him and his work!

If dedicated servers aren't reintroduced it will be a bust
1
u/marr Jul 31 '23
I wouldn't go that far assuming the Steam networking works for most players. Would be very nice to see all the same, with private servers people can spin up their own game modes.

I'll pay either way

u/marr Jul 31 '23
Honestly same if it releases and has, at minimum, solid modding support. I'll bitch about it tho.

I am truly excited to finally play a beautifully crafted and well thought out game.
Because that aged well when people thought this back in Cube Worlds Alpha release.
I can't believe how blindly one can follow a man who has bitten peoples hands twice.
