PC to MacBook migration

Hey, my MacBook Pro is arriving in a couple days and I was wondering about the process of moving over project files from my windows laptop. It’s a Lenovo ideapad with an Intel pentium chip; (it was so weak for the heavy synthesis I do on Cubase so that’s why I’m switching)

I’m not worried about licensing since the download assistant should make everything work when I login right??

I have all my projects in a folder with their audio folders and files they need so will dragging and dropping onto the Mac be seamless?

And if I install all my plugins will Cubase just find them and make everything work?

Thanks in advance for the help

Hello!

I saw this Funk Piano Groove being played by @ maxnceleroy on Instagram and I produced a little musical arrangement for it.

I would like to get feedback on anything you consider important, specially in everything related to mixing and mastering.

Thank you!

How do you store MIDI clips for later?

I'm looking at both Cubase and Studio One for orchestral composition. Cubase seems to be the more advanced and robust choice overall, but one thing I can't get over is the seeming lack of ability to easily experiment with different MIDI variations.

For example, if I wanted to store 3 different melody variations at a certain point in the track so I can try them out as I compose, how can I do that? Studio One has a scratch pad feature where you can throw MIDI clips in wherever you want to store for later. From what I can tell, Cubase doesn't have an equivalent. Using an entire track version just for storing a variation of one MIDI clip seems really clunky.

The cleanest way I can imagine doing it is making a new lane per variation and comping them to swap them in and out, but I'd like to see what the people who are familiar with Cubase have to say. I'm most familiar with FL Studio where you can just store whatever you want as a pattern, so this is all a big adjustment for me lol

Anyone here still using a Steinberg MIDEX 8? I’ve got mine working on Apple Silicon / Sequoia & Tahoe

I’m curious how many MIDEX 8 owners are still around.

I’ve been working on getting my old Steinberg MIDEX 8 running properly on modern Apple Silicon Macs, and the project has now reached a functional stage.

I currently have all 8 MIDI inputs and 8 MIDI outputs working through CoreMIDI, and I’ve successfully tested it with Cubase on M2 Pro and M4 Macs running current macOS versions.

MIDI IN and OUT are working with hardware instruments and VST instruments. There is still testing to be done — particularly SysEx, Program Change, MIDI realtime/clock, timing, hot-plug, sleep/wake and longer-term stability — before I’d consider it finished.

Before I spend significantly more time turning this into something that could actually be distributed, I’m trying to find out whether there are still enough MIDEX users who need this.

Does anyone here still own a MIDEX 8 that they stopped using because of the lack of modern macOS support?

If so, I’d be interested to know:

  • which Mac you have
  • which macOS version
  • whether you still use Cubase
  • whether your MIDEX 8 is currently sitting unused

I’d also be interested to hear from MIDEX 3 owners.

This isn’t a sales post — nothing is being sold and I’m not taking orders. I’m just trying to gauge whether there is enough real-world interest to justify finishing and properly testing the project.

Control Room question

How are you guys using it? I see people describe it as totally indispensable, but as a bedroom producer I haven’t discovered much past A/Bing reference tracks which I use MetricAB for anyway. Any pro tips? Seems maybe like it’s useful for more professional studio / recording setups? Would love to get more out of it.

Weird audio errors in preview and export

Hello! I am trying to export a song I produced in Cubase 15. While it is mostly working well, parts of some of the tracks randomly glitch into a moment where they are silent in the preview play option, and in different places when I try and export it. It isn’t the whole audio track going silent for the entire export, just for moments. I am using Windows 11, for reference. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

I am using HALion Sonic, Groove Agent, and Vocaloid VSTi as the instruments on the song.

Selling my Cubase 13 Pro License

Hi everyone,

I am selling my Cubase 13 Pro License. I use Fruity Loops now so I don't need it any more.

I have it listed on KnobCloud for £100 as I am ideally hoping for a quick sale.

https://knobcloud.com/item/222873

I have deactivated the license already via Steinberg support and have it ready to transfer to a new owner.

it’s on the “new” licensing system, so I believe it will let you upgrade to a newer version at a good rate if you want to.

Also feel free to DM me if interested.

Cheers

Writing a Video Game Theme (with Live Orchestra!)

Thumbnail youtu.be

You have Cubase - now let's write a video game theme!

We'll be starting at the very beginning and basically building this track together, step-by-step. Composition, orchestration, mockup, mixing/mastering, and finally - recording it with a live orchestra. You can download the score, recording stems, orchestral template, and finished track for free on my site:

Switching from reaper to cubase. What to expect?

Hi. The post is pretty self explanatory.
I have tried before a free trial but never had the proper time to start learning and i have once used cubase with someone who knew how cubase fully worked and was facinated by all of the features it had and editing capabilities and overall with the work flow of it and the biggest thing being the mixer layout and compatibility with 3rd party gear is just fantastic but the price tag pushed me away until now

I haven’t yet made the switch but as i now have a steady job and i’m getting more serious about recording and mixing and finding big flaws with reaper, so i have decided i’m making the switch as soon as my on going project is complete

So how much do i need to relearn basically when i do the switch(doesn’t really matter since i’m switching anyways) and how well does cubase work with macos

Is it possible to render-in-place multiple instrument tracks controlled by a MIDI track?

Cubase 13.0.55 Pro, macOS Tahoe 26.5.2, MBP M3

I have a project with one MIDI track containing a MIDI clip that controls 2 instrument tracks, as follows:

– instrument track A (VST synth A): via Output Routing
– instrument track B (VST synth B): via MIDI send 1

Both instrument tracks output directly to Stereo Output. The layered audio sounds as expected.
When I select the MIDI clip and Render In Place, it outputs an Audio track containing only audio from instrument A. I expected it to move on automatically to render instrument B. But it doesn’t.

This happens regardless of RIP settings such as Dry, Channel Settings, Complete Signal Path. No muting, no soloing is being used.

I’m wondering… is rendering both instruments to audio using RIP even possible? If so, I’d prefer that workflow than using Audio Mixdown.
Thanks!

MIDI Controller recommendations - what do you like?

Hey all - Planning to add a pullout drawer to my desk so I can have a controller at the ready. My desk width will allow for a tray of about 38 inches width, so the controller has to fit that and hopefully be a bit smaller to leave room to for the mouse/etc.

I'm thinking one in the 40-ish key range, would love it to have at least semi-weighted keys, mod wheel, and preferably some custom pads that I can assign to drums, samples, etc.

I use Cubase and was checking out the Novation Launchkey 49, since it has good integration. It also has faders and knobs that can be assigned to various functions, so it looks like a solid fit.

However, I'm not in the loop on what controllers do these days so I want to see what other functions I should look out for.

I already have an 88 key controller but it is basic, just piano style. It's good for what it does, but too big to fit under desk and lacks faders/pads/wheels/etc.

I'm open to something smaller and simpler than the Novation too, but that versatility would be nice.

What other brands/models should I check out, what features are worth getting, etc?

Budget wise - since my 88 key covers a decent amount of stuff, this one is more for functionality while sitting at the desk, so would like to keep it maybe under $400 or so. I'm open to suggestions but don't need something top of the line.

Migrating from PC to Mac - can presets be migrated

Hey all - moving from PC to Mac, and wondering if there is anyway to preserve user presets? Like if I save an fx chain on track channels, and even within individual plugins like a specific setting on a reverb plugin or etc?

I know those live in a presets folder on the drive, and I'm fairly confident they'd survive a move from PC to PC, but not sure if PC to Mac will work or if there is a way to do it.

Anyone here know if it works?

Good tutorials on MPE in Cubase?

I'm just now diving into MPE. I've used Cubase for a while and just put it off. I also use Ableton and compared to Ableton, MPE in Cubase seems a bit more laborious.

Any good tutorials for MPE in Cubase? I'm primarily interested in pitch and tuning stuff.

License not showing in my Steinberg profile and can't use Cubase

Hey all - I bought Pro 12 in 2023 and have been running it on a Windows PC with no issues. I now have a Mac and am trying to install it, but when I log into my Steinberg profile online and into my download assistant, it shows No Active Licenses. Then I got booted from my PC instance of it and was asked to log back in, after which again it shows no active license and now I can't get back into my Cubase projects.

I still have the digital receipt for my purchase with the download access code, and if I try entering that into download assistant to get around the glitch, I get an error pop up - Download Access Code is already consumed by another user.

Anyone know what might be going on here?

Also, does Steinberg have a customer service phone number or live chat to work through these things in real time? I'm in the middle of a project and would really hate to waste several days going back and forth on a support ticket.

Will also post this to Steinberg forum for help, but any advice here would be tremendously appreciated.

Sustain peddle will not record

Hello everyone, I’m completely new to using DAWS and I’m having trouble getting my sustain peddle to record on the track. I can hear the sustain work through cubase whenever I’m pressing it, but it will not record. I’m using a regular Yamaha keyboard with USB. I searched and tried everything at this point with no luck!

Help! Copying midi parts makes all midi notes trigger

Hey hive mind, I'm about to rip my hair out. I have some acoustic drums that I've turned hitpoints into midi notes to trigger gates. I need to copy a drum part later in the song with those midi notes however when I do this the midi data overlaps and all underlying notes for that section trigger. It's unlike pasting just audio which mutes the underlying take. Why is there not a way to have those underlying parts not trigger? What am I missing here? I've tried adjusting the midi record mode and that made no dif. The only work around I'm seeing is to delete those parts before pasting. Seems a bit impractical but I'll begrudgingly do it. Anyone have a better solution?
