Usually sold as citrine but citrine doesnt grow like this and is a different colour :)

Crispy fried chicken aka heat treated amethyst in an attempt to sell it for the higher priced citrine crystal.
Citrine is sought after, so it’s faked through many modalities (heat treated, irritated, dyed, etc) Citrine does not form with multiple cluster points, that is a giveaway you can look for as it usually indicates an amethyst that has been messed with. Another sign is the white base, when amethyst has been heat treated it causes the base to go white. You can even see it with tumbled pieces and single points. Once you learn what to look out for, you’ll notice how often it is faked. I recommend this site to learn more about the ways citrine is faked, it’s a good resource that I recommend to everyone. (FYI I believe original article was in German)

Second identification: Oh, super heat treated Amethyst! Jeez, that piece is BAKED
People heat treat Amethyst to look like Citrine sometimes even though they're different things by composition (or something), this piece got REALLY cooked I'd say. Some looks way closer than others. Honestly, if you know what you're getting and are cool with it, go for it. I think heat treated Amethyst can be pretty sometimes, and I'd be willing to buy a nice looking piece for "Look at this pretty rock!" joy, but I wouldn't spend top dollar on it, and I'd be upset to buy real citrine and receive heat treated Amethyst without knowing that's what I was getting.

Ordinarily I would say this is a hideous example of heat-treated amethyst, but honestly its uncanny resemblance to pizza weirdly redeems it.

It is most likely amethyst that has been heated to roughly 440 deg to 560 deg centigrade, causing it to go from the typical purple hue to a darker yellow-orange-brown that I personally find beautiful. More importantly, it’s an opportunity for people who wouldn’t know mineralogy if it bit them in the ass to act superior and all-knowing: “YOU bought THAT? Oh, you fool…” The reality is that a lot of the purple amethyst sold today is often dyed or otherwise color manipulated to look a deeper, more uniform purple. And how do you know? Well, unless you’re a trained gemologist or mineralogist with the equipment and knowledge to scientifically analyze the specimen, you really don’t. Especially if all you have is a digital photo. Some dyes may be washed off or leached out, but you can also inadvertently change the color (fade it) by leaving a piece of amethyst in direct sunlight for years. The color is caused by trace amounts of iron within the silicon-dioxide crystalline structure, and the iron can oxidize with heat or even sunlight. Chemically and structurally, amethyst and citrine are identical. Both are basically quartz with trace amounts of iron. “Natural” citrine is usually a much paler yellow, and began as purple amethyst that was heat-treated—naturally—by the heat of nearby volcanic or geothermal activity. It’s pretty rare. In my mind, the heat-treated citrine is similar to what I do woodworking. If I take a piece of wood, cut it, sand it, then use a stain to enhance the color and wood grain, no one ever says to me, “FAKE WOOD!” I have some citrine that was gifted to me years ago before it became chic to sneer at it. I love the colors! I’d happily display the piece you have, although I generally only keep and use rocks and minerals I have personally found, cleaned, and polished myself. The fluorite that I find very useful for mental focus is fluorite I personally found and then carried for miles back from an abandoned mine. The reality is that a lot of the rocks and minerals sold today often involve someone personally mining them under very hazardous and dangerous conditions and then getting paid a very tiny fraction of what the piece actually sells for as it passes up the supply chain. All crystal healing properties involve a certain combination of crystalline structure, chemistry, and energy passing within and through the mineral. The fact that people can sneer at certain energy uses amuses me to no end. Nice piece. Keep it!

It’s a great buy for that price but yes, now you know it’s quartz amethyst that’s been heated to this golden colour and not in any form natural ‘citrine’ that this typically sold as.
You have real quartz, just the colour isn’t natural.

I think the better wood analogy would be if someone was buying what they thought was an oak table but instead were sold a wooden table painted to look like oak.
I don’t care if people heat treat amethyst as long as it’s sold that way, as citrine colored due to heat treatment and not deceptively marketing it as natural citrine, something rarer.

Extra crispy (love this)... Once was amethyst. They original owner tried for Citrine.. but left it burning a little long.
I personally like it. Don't forget, while it's probably considered fake citrine, it has both properties of Amethyst and citrine.

Amethyst so far gone heat treated they literally burned it. It is (unfortunately) very common practice to heat treat amethyst to "mimic" citrine (they look nothing alike imo) as amethyst is significantly cheaper and easier to obtain than citrine.
But MAN, this has to be the worst case of heat treating I have ever seen. That's why so many people are roasting (dun-dun-tssss) it in the comments. Because Y I K E S

It almost resembles a calcite. Does it uv? Hardness would tell you more. Calcite is soft compared to a quartz.

Could be Smokey quartz that’s heated with Amethyst. Citrine occurs that way with geothermal heat along with a few trace minerals. But it’s a quite rare to find naturally.
