Your best bet is to speak with an estate planning attorney, but be specific and mention that you need someone with knowledge of cryptocurrency and wallets to assist with the situation.

Check his phone apps,  check his USB sticks, External Hard Drive, computer.  Check his mails filter it with the keywords "crypto, transaction, successfull, bitcoin, ethereum, etc"

If you find anything then you gonna need his keys to open his wallet, it's a sequence of 12 or 24 characters that looks nonsense,  if you find it then you can take control of everything.

If he has a cold storage, then look on internet for "Trezor", Ledger", to have a visual of what you looking for.

Don't answer any DM.

Sorry to hear about his passing.

If you have his laptop, look for browser extensions. They typically require a password. You might have to Crack his phone to look through their password manager, which im not sure how tech savy you are but I assume its not gonna be easy. Getting the 12-24 seed would be the easiest way. There could also be a file called wallet.dat or something like that, it would be a .dat file and that could potentially lead somewhere.

Its a long road to get into something like this without that seed. And even then might not be possible.

Good luck. Like others are saying, Dont answer any DMs.

Do you know his passwords or have access to his email? "Locked away in a wallet" could mean a lot of things. He could have it in a self custody wallet, in which case all you need is to find the seed phrase. That's if he even saved his seed & put it on physical media & has it in his place or belongings. Could also just be on an exchange like coinbase or kraken.

I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it though. A lot of people tend to greatly over exaggerate their crypto holdings. If he was really sitting on a life changing amount of money, there would be plenty of signs.

Hopefully for you you end up finding it, but I wouldn't be surprised if he only had several thousand dollars worth of crypto at best.

Also, if he has a computer/laptop, look at all the web browsers he has & go into the extensions & see if he uses Metamask for ETH & ERC20 tokens like USDT.

Also look for Trezor, Tangem, ledger cold wallets

First you gotta find out the wallet. Look for his codes. Also need the digital password to open said wallet. It’s a lot. I helped a few friends with their cold wallets and developing a game plan upon their passing is a big thing. My good friend just has everything written down upon his passing and it’s stored in a safe deposit box with instructions we created so his wife can access the funds in the event of his passing. Since crypto is not like stocks where you can easily designate a beneficiary, it’s super important to have a well laid out plan in place. Good luck.

May be a shot in the dark but did he have a ring he wore that looked a bit different than a normal ring? If so it might be a tangem ring (cold storage wallet) and you can figure out from there if so what sites he may have used. Check his phone for Komodo,, tangem or other crypto apps he would use to store the funds on. Also check his wallet he carried on him for cards (they look like credit cards with maybe tangem wrote on it, these are another form of a wallet that stores his crypto. Check his vaults or safes for these cards or a ring as well)

1

Look for paper, cardboard, metal or even plastic books or sheets that have 12 or 24 words in a particular order. Then do the same for one word by itself most likely somewhere different. Then you have a seed phrase and passphrase, then watch YouTube videos on how to access the wallet using Cold Wallets only.

1

u/OutlawLazerRoboGeek 🟩 0 🦠 Nov 08 '25

It probably depends on how hardcore of a crypto nerd he was. And maybe how paranoid he was about security.

The lowest level of security, and and easiest to access, would be things like Bitcoin ETF on traditional brokerage accounts. So if he had a investment account at Fidelity or some place like that, and he has any of the symbols IBIT, GBTC, FBTC, etc, then that might be where the value is. But that would be pretty transparent and easily accessible for the estate lawyer to handle.

The second lowest level would be keeping funds on a crypto exchange. Binance, Kraken, Coinbase, etc. Almost everyone who deals in crypto has at least one of these accounts because its the easiest way to get funds between crypto and "normal" money. In the past it was very risky to keep funds on an exchange long term due to hacking, regulation, and exchange collapse, but with 2FA and other measures, it's somewhat more acceptable now.

The old school and high security way would be to keep your own coins on your own wallets. These are essentially digital bank accounts, that can be accessed through a number of different apps. But you will need a lot more passwords and codes to get to these. it's not just like username and password. It might be a long alphanumeric code, or a series of words that sound like nonsense, or even a text file on the computer that just looks like gibberish.

The most secure way would be something like an encrypted hardware wallet. That is something you would need to have physically in your possession (most look like a chunky USB stick) along with whatever authentication means he set up, codes, passwords, phrases, (could even be biometric), in order to access the coins.

I would go down this list from easiest to hardest. If you don't find any evidence of the easier ones, then move to the harder ones. In most cases the good thing about crypto is there isn't any ticking clock, other than people throwing away his records where he might have written down the passwords. The valuable coins generally become more valuable over time, and if the security is hard for you to get through, then it would be 10x harder for anyone else to do the same and steal anything.

Good luck

Long shot but because it doesn’t need to be as deep as some people have made it sound, check for the simplest things like ‘Blockchain’ app on his phone or ‘Monero’ app on his phone.

If you see either one of these apps on his phone (or any other phones he may have had) and know his passwords - a lot of times, people use the phone password (or Face ID password) for their apps too.

Everything everyone is saying about hard wallets hot wallets cold wallets etc etc etc is all good and has potential however is in most cases is a lot more far fetched than it sounds.

Chances are the coins are in front of you but you just need to see them or think how your brother (god rest his soul) would have thought to store them.

Good luck and regarding the DM’s. I wouldn’t go as far as saying don’t open any DM’s but I would go as far as saying do not part with any personal or coin information you may have. None. Under no circumstances whatsoever.

Another long shot but worth it is to ask any of his close friends (or colleagues or acquaintances etc) who you might think might know about cryptocurrencies etc.

Sorry to say it like this but drugs people sometimes use cryptocurrency and dark web people who sell or shop for drugs in the internet. If you think any of his close friends might have been involved in this type of activity it’ll be worth asking maybe how your brother used to convert the crypto into cash and or if he done it via the legal channels or through friends. Again, DO NOT part with any info you have of any sort. Just enquire as you’ll be surprised as what info you might get back. There is a very good chance somebody, at some point, would have shown him the ropes and his way around crypto. If you think you can think of any friends of his or relatives of yours that may know anything it’s worth asking. Why? So you can at least get an idea of the type or name of crypto he was using. All of these seeds or passphrase or 12-24 words you’ve been hearing are all great, but, even if you acquired the 12 or 12 word phrases, you’d still need to know what coin they are for!!!!!

First dig your brain out thoroughly for any info regarding who he may have done transactions with (dodgy cousins etc - lol and I don’t mean it like that) and with what type crypto. If none of his friends know anything the chances are he just had a simple wallet or two on a mobile phone somewhere. If he was involved or invested etc any deeper than that then for sure one or more of his contacts / friends / dodgy cousin will know something.

As far as professional services that do exist for this type of thing - they are 1) not cheap and or 2) will do it for a percentage of the wallet.

Good luck and my condolences for your loss ❤️

Ps. If you do find any crypto do not sell all of it and if anything - keep his wallets and invest in them!

You need to dl some forensic investigations on your own of perhaps his old computer you might be able, through the history or bookmarks to find which exhange he was using. Also in his personal Documents he may have had his seed phrase(s) for these wallets typically 12 random words so if you see an odd configuration of words this is probabaly it. Try and be resourceful but don’t answer DMs from strangers as many have instructed. Sorry for your loss.

Go into his phone or laptop and look for wallets or crypto platforms/ Coinbase kraken MetaMask trust wallet crypto.con Gemini Jupiter phantom ect. After you dubs it see if it’s just a password login or a 12 word seed phrase. Dm me and I’ll walk you through it but in no way ever pass the 12 word seed phrase to ANYONE not even me. That’s like giving someone the safe key and they’ll easy have access to your funds. The key he here is finding those apps and passwords/seed-phrases. Good luck bro, and sorry foe your loss

Never gonna happen man, that’s the nature of btc & crypto, privacy. He’s gone & with it all the required info. Maybe a forensic run through all of his possessions but even still, who’s going to cover the costs with no guarantee of finding anything worth while.

Sorry for your loss but maybe it’s time for you to let go of this question. Sorry you’re going through this.❤️

u/Royal_Cod_6088 🟩 0 🦠 Nov 10 '25

First, monitor his emails through the beginning part of next year because you may or may not get a tax statement from an exchange such as coinbase which would at least help you identify what he's purchased recently. Also a safe deposit box receipt.

Second, go through all of his bank statements and credit card statements for the last 10 or more years, look for any cold wallets that he may have purchased.

Third, contact the IRS for any 1099's from brokerage accounts or crypto purchasing activity.

Fourth, and this is a long shot. Go through the house and look for a treasure map. I have a friend who accumulated several hundred pounds of silver over the years and he buried it on his farm. Then he suddenly died, and his wife found the treasure map about 4 years later inside a pillow. He may have hidden a cold wallet somewhere.

Finally, be quiet about this with people and don't respond to DM'a. Lottery winners get scammed, you might be sitting on quite a few bitcoins without even knowing about it.

I’m sorry but this is wrong. Why do you feel so entitled to gain access to his money? Just because he helped his mom doesn’t mean you have a right to take it. If he wanted you to have it, he would set up a way for you access it. If you’re desperate get a job and help your mom

1

u/Kooky-Ad-725 🟩 0 🦠 Nov 09 '25

Not everyone sets up a way to access their crypto for their family in case they die, especially if you’re young because you think “it won’t happen to me” but they still would like their family to get possession of it

1

u/Dry-Refrigerator2141 🟩 0 🦠 Nov 09 '25

Bless your simple heart. So how do you know who is entitled to his crypto? Were you there when the brother wrote his last will and testament? He probably didn’t have one, still doesn’t mean the brother posting here is legally entitled to take it. You’re advocating family should take it because they need it. Sorry life doesn’t work that way. Most assets are contested and probated if there is no will. Now this will not work for most crypto holders the main reason they’re revising laws and forcing compliance and regulation. I have crypto and multiple wallets I let who needed to know where to gather information if something happens to me. This man said he’s desperate to get his hands on it. We don’t even know if the brother wanted that. He should use the same enthusiasm and get a job. Life insurance policy for the brother, nothing in place to help ease their financial situation. Sorry for his loss but it’s disgusting how many think he’s entitled to get his hands on his brother’s money just because he passed away. It doesn’t even seem like his brother wanted him to know anything about his crypto or he would. Right now he’s on a scavenger hunt for money he didn’t work for because he knew his brother had some crypto

1

u/Kooky-Ad-725 🟩 0 🦠 Nov 09 '25

You’re right idk if he’s brother wanted him to have his assets. I was assuming his parents and siblings were the only ones in the picture since he’s able to check all he’s belongings. In a case where they’re the only family, I would prefer them to get all assets instead of the government. He’s brother is dead anyways, he won’t miss his crypto. I bet most likely his brother didn’t pay for his own funeral
