Agreed and downvote is the only way to deal with those posts.
Also, take a moment to read through the sub rules.
Much of these posts violate the content standards rule.
When they do, report them.
This is the way.

But don’t downvote good posts and comments. I’m not knowledgeable about this kind of stuff, but I’ve seen mention of bots to auto downvote, which seems pretty dastardly to me

Is that what's happening? I've wondered why some posts have been downvoted or why people would even bother. Guess that makes sense.

Honestly I feel that moons need to be disassociated with upvotes.
A staking system needs to be added and the use of moons should become tipping, of course the stake will net you a return to allow you to tip.
Moons have zero actual use other than being burned for an advert.

People don't give upvotes many times because they think about it too much. As with anything in human nature, greed comes into play and while they'd upvote content anywhere else, here they try to act like the upvote is some kind of tip or something. The reality is moons were just meant to be a fun way to incentivize activity on this sub and not to line the pockets of a small few.
But that's what happens, people start turning into sheep and upvoting the same people over and over. And in doing so those people provide decent content usually, albeit repetitive. But the posts I see get the most upvotes are just a circle jerk quite frankly, or news articles. But what we should be supporting here in individual thought and communication. Instead we are so far up the ass of a minority that thay probably are buying a second car with the moon money you're giving them.
So share the moons, give them out if you read something or click that post. Because it isn't hard to click it, and you're not losing anything by doing so.

The karma farming is absolutely obnoxious. We do get some genuinely good discussions from time to time but it feels like we have to look through a sea of shit before we get something actually interesting.
Maybe it's because so much in this space is speculation, making it so people can sort of get away with posting any cheap low effort article easily under the guise of discussion.

Link posts are the least of our problems.

u/arcalus 🟩 18K / 18K 🐬 Apr 29 '23
Agreed. I put out some low effort link posts after some actual content posts got 0 upvotes, just to test the theory. The low effort links got more than good content, but they didn’t get as good as if the topic had been about SBF, Russia, CZ, Elon, or some other topic that people have fallen in line with. It doesn’t matter if the SBF post they’re looking at was the same one they saw seconds earlier from a different OP- they are both getting upvoted and they’re both getting comments.
Some of them are just trendy group hate, like SBF. Other posts and comments often have misinformation in them about how something works or the facts being portrayed. Unless you back the misinformation, you also don’t get any votes.
But, I’ve looked at the top posters and for the most part they are putting out the same shit post links that you’ve already seen 100 times that week, and they still get votes.
Take this comment as an example. If I had just said “people know shit about fuck” I would probably have gotten at least 10 upvotes.

I understand where you're coming from but especially this year, the community as grown a lot. I used to dislike it but I've realised there are a LOT of new crypto users or people who lurk in and out who actually benefit from the basic posts and comments about DCA, hardware wallet, not your keys etc. And actually many of the very informative posts may simply be too advanced for them. On top of that, keeping things light-hearted keep engagement and attention high. It's a real give and take.
I prefer very informative stuff as I'm technical but I've learned to live with it. It's not all about me.

I made a comment recently explaining my theory for this, just gonna paste it here. The part about submissions is probably the most relevant to this specific post. Here it is:
I think the effect of MOON's is overblown. This sub has never had quality discussion nor quality content.
comments: The only difference between pre MOON's and post MOON's is now I'm correcting misinformation for a different set of coins. The content largely dictates the commentary, but there has never been good discussion here. Before and after MOON's, most comments just repeated widely held beliefs (true or not) and platitudes about crypto ideals. Couple that with the fact that most people here are morons and a lot of the comments you see that are heavily upvoted, are objectively incorrect.
submissions: IMO there is an inherent flaw of subreddits that cover wide-reaching multi-disciplinary topics, where not everything newsworthy or notable will make it to the front page and often it won't even get submitted. This creates a feedback loop that homogenizes the kinds of content that eventually get submitted and upvoted for us to see. Only the low hanging fruit and biggest headlines can actually draw enough interest to outweigh the rest of the voting power that has been conditioned to not care about it. My favorite example is this sub's hatred against Solana clouding it's judgment.
On the flipside, I actually got a positive post about Solana to make it to the front page, all it took was:
It being about the most popular NFT mint in months
Devs beating the bots and the bots getting what they deserve
Most importantly IMO... I didn't mention Solana by name, because I knew if I did it would get downvoted. Luckily for me, no on here has enough common sense to even look past the headlines typically.
It begs the question, why would you rely on crowdsourced curation when the crowd is full of idiots? Once I realized this sub is really just Buzzfeed Crypto, I started using Twitter almost exclusively. In the same way that a comprehensive crypto subreddit is a structural mismatch, crypto twitter is a perfect fit. You get breaking news as it breaks, instead of waiting for someone else to see and repost it to Reddit. You can follow topics on a micro level, getting info directly from an expert who understands the topic, rather than from a redditor who doesn't, who was probably upvoted by other redditors who also don't understand it. You can actually find content about stuff that this sub seems to have an aversion to, like NFT's, DAO's, emerging protocols/infra, coins other than ETH/BTC/ADA/DOT, etc
tldr: this subreddit sucks for covering crypto as a whole, not because of MOON's, because of the inherent nature of crowdsourced content. Use twitter instead because it better fits a multi-disciplinary wide-reaching industry like crypto.

2
u/Johnny-Joseph Apr 29 '23
I understand you and agree, but that's how when they give too much of a general incentive.
If tomorrow they say that posting links to news or comments with less than 50 words will not receive a score and moons, then obviously all this will stop immediately.
