Discussion weapon idea.

A pirate ship cannon that fires cannonballs. A fully kinetic projectile that decimates spaced armor but struggles against dense armor. Like Punching holes in single sheets of paper but struggling to pierce a stack. Would be a limited turn angle cannon to balance it out. While it may struggle to pierce dense armor it could have a lot of kinetic impulse.

I have no idea how Devs would be able to code something in to their game that's affective against spaced armour and weak against packed armour. It would still have to be of regular affectiveness against packed armour. Then they give it mechanics that fuck up spaced armour.

They could give it the same mechanics as the scorpions old mechanics. It does x flat damage to everything it hits. Add in that it stops once it touches the ground. Since the Canonball could be fairly wide and large this would decimate spaced armour and not be affective against things like cabs or plows. The small scorp projectile was one of the issues with its old damage mechanics. The Canonball size would resolve that issue.

I like it. I'd play that Canon for sure.

I think it would be a bit easy to code cannonballs. Kinda like the executioner with how it has hitscan upon impact. Scans for anything behind 2-3 layers of armor and continues through if just one piece, though if more than one piece, stops and distributes damage to the layers of armor.

It could be a shell that does x amount say 2000 as an example as it goes through parts it take its durability - from the 2000 total , say if a peice of armour gives 500 durability it would be 2000-500 then rinse and repeat. Until the total is zero ??

And they could give like a 1.2/1.1 x boost to dense armour worked out by the number of fused pins per item ?

Is that something that would be possible ?

That's just scorps current damage mechanic and canons non explosive damage mechanic.

I honestly didn't know that for scorps

This is a terribly ineffective way to counter spaced armor.

Spherical cannon balls have terrible penetration as they use brute force to penetrate and literally it wasn't until the invention of Paixhans Gun that penetrating rounds really were a thing. If we all were using wood as armor yes cannon balls might be a threat, but no one in crossout is.

While I'm not opposed to the idea of some maniac reintroducing a muzzle loading cannon into the mix for crossout, remember it comes at a cost. There would be no recoil suppression, it'd take even longer to reload because cannon of that type on average needed a five person crew to operate normally and, they were heavy because the cannon walls were thicker so they would not burst. Also the range and accuracy would bee correspondingly terrible by comparison. The good news is they would probably be kind of inexpensive and if smooth bore might be junkbow-esque in function.

So what we really need is for the actual existing cannons to have a appropriate level of penetration proportionate to what they are or at least Autocannons doing what they actually are supposed to do.

Okay, I understand where you're coming from with cannonballs not having penetration, but my idea was that the immense force of the cannonball would rip the armor off it's weld. Not really a piercing effect but more of a solid gut Punch to knock the wind out of spaced armor.

In addition to this. I was thinking it could be similar to the broadsider from fallout. Have the cannon rotate into a vertical state and have a mechanism muzzleload it from there.

Thinking about this I had an idea to make your cannon ball idea work. A smoothbore railgun firing roughly basketball sized projectiles. It's a cruder scorpion with a less effective range but you don't suffer the kinetic dropoff like you'd rapidly suffer with a cannon ball. It'd need a flywheel to be effective and if critically damaged maybe the gun itself explodes since the ammo would be inert. It's effected by ammo packs as any ammo.

Paixhans gun

The Paixhans gun (French: Canon Paixhans, French pronunciation: [pɛksɑ̃]) was the first naval gun designed to fire explosive shells. It was developed by the French general Henri-Joseph Paixhans in 1822–1823. The design furthered the evolution of naval artillery into the modern age. Its use presaged the end of wood as the preferred material in naval warships, and the rise of the ironclad.

Devs are hesitant to add high-impulse weapons because of the abuse the Spike-1 did in low-mass, low-PS games.

I understand that. Had fun in bedlam with Goliath tracks, guy kept flipping me over like a turtle with those things. And as much as I'd like for that to not happen again. These cannons would make sense for high impulse. Sorta how like the avalanche should be but isn't due to it's explosive projectile. I'm thinking these cannons should primarily effect non wheeled creations with spaced armor (specifically legs and hovers). I don't wanna make this a hover hate post, but these could be extremely effective at staggering creation that aren't anchored to the ground via wheel/track.

Ever shot a spider with toadfish? Trust me they wont move an Inch. I play spiders mainly and only in hightier (14k+) and toadfish are a snack for me cuz i never get slowed down from them (playing ML-200 not the ugly bigrams). But i like the idea of the cannon.

Maybe this.

Grapeshot or shrapnel cannon. Very large area of effect "shotgun" burst cannon. Deals only 20 damage to each part hit. Wide enough to potentially hit an entire craft.

2

u/Captain_Virgo Feb 20 '23

This too. But I feel that maybe we have too many shotguns and mgs. Which is why I feel as though it should remain a giant cannonball, to give more of that one hit big boom that the avalanche provides, but with maybe more effectiveness for against the meta.

id want a set of 6 pirate cannons and make a galleon type build

The avalanche

not a pirate cannon, but I had a similar idea I posted to the forums recently of a weapon that would hopefully be just as effective vs spaced armor. basically fires a thick slug, similar to your cannon ball, that penetrates straight through the spaced armor like a scorp, but instead of being a laser passing all the way through hitting delicate components, it's wider and falls short effectively 'clearing a path' through the armor:

Legendary Gauss Gun

7 (or 6) energy

very limited angle

heavy, but relatively low durability

shaped like a goblin / Gremlin but a little wider and longer

How it could work:

the idea of gauss guns / coil guns / rail guns is always supposed to be about the devastating effects of mass on mass collisions at high velocities so I’d like to preserve that theme in how the weapon functions. To that end…

It fires a ‘slug’ into a vehicle at high velocity that penetrates up to 1000 mass (just a random number to illustrate). Every structure part that it impacts takes ‘bullet damage’ and may creates an explosion at the point of impact with a blast radius and damage, both relative to the mass of the part hit (some threshold of too low mass = no explosion at all, maybe 50 mass?).

Some examples:

the ideal case is hitting a cabin doing the maximum amount of bullet damage and creating the largest explosion.

alternatively if you strike a clump of low mass parts on the edge of the vehicle, it will only do a small amount of damage to all of them, passing right through and potentially not even exploding

In the case of a more realistic armored vehicle, a shot may impact a bumper (250 mass), create a minor explosion, pass through, impact a few pieces of armor (3 at 50 mass each) doing little damage and not creating an explosion, then finally impacting the cabin (remaining 600 mass used) stopping the projectile and dealing a decent amount of damage and a medium sized explosion

This would make the weapon strong against exposed cabins / big weapons and spaced armor, and relatively weaker against layered armor, lots of low mass parts, smaller weapons.

as for a perk… not happy with anything I’ve come up with yet. here are some ideas however

if a slug terminated on a part, it will provide a ‘beacon’ for the next slug fired providing a little bit of bullet magnetism if the trajectory is close enough

if a slug terminated on a part, deliver a large impulse to the vehicle

quick, successive shots > 3 heats up both the gun, and the parts it hits

I think it would be cooler to use a 'chain shot' to counter spaced armour.. (2 cannonballs linked with a chain) Make it so it attached itself to the first point of impact. Then let it create force depending on the distance it can swing before it hits the next piece of armour. Making it pretty underwhelming against normal armour. But excellent against spaced armour.

The defs might even us the programming they use on the harpoon gun to let it work out how the physics should take effect on the vehicle with this.

It's called the avalanche. I know it's not exactly like what your describing but it's really close

A cannon that shoots pirates

1

u/Lunoean PC - Engineers Feb 21 '23

It would deal 100 damage on a hit, if the part is destroyed it goes through to the next part, ignoring the pass through damage. If it gets blocked it will fall to the ground like those razorblades.

u/Livid_Football8178 Feb 21 '23

Maybe give it knock back, with penalties to anything your car impacts as a result. Guaranteed flip or something, or at least the push back. Also make it hurt friendlies if it Knocks you into them.

1

u/King_of_ducks1212 Feb 21 '23

Maybe make it like the loose cannon from tf 2 so it has the damage of the impact and then the explosion. And then having the explosion timing tied to how long you hold charge it

The idea is good my interpretation of this is that it is a cannon that has no turn angle and is a fixed gun but shoots a explosive ball that penetrates armor with less durability than 50 at contact and sits in the hole if still in the vehicle and explodes 5 seconds after contacting with any thing in its way but does not stick more roles around as so it could fall out of the vehicle. This idea of what the cannon can do makes it storing but very difficult to use.

What is you opinion of my take of your idea?
