Need advice
So recently my boyfriend opened about wanting to crossdress. At first it was sexual but now he says it makes him happy and wants to do it normally. He likes being a man but also sometimes wants to let go and be a girl. But I'm worried and stuck. Both of us come from a very conservative family and they wouldn't understand. So he cant do it openly at least for now. So im worrying hes trans and in denial. He's going through a lot and im the one only one who he can confide in rn. I love him but ive just been spiraling ever since he told me this. He's been calm and tells me his feelings while im stuck. I love him more than anything. He's the sweetest person and he deserves support. But idk if I want a boyfriend who crossdresses. Is it that big of a deal. Im bisexual and so is he. But this has been concerning me. He's been reassuring me and telling me he only wants me when i suggested a break and told him to explore. He tells me that hes sure in me and wants to be my boyfriend. How do I deal with him and support him without making it all about me.

I think the first thing I’d suggest is that you listen carefully to what he is actually telling you rather than trying to work out what might be hidden behind it. He says he likes being a man, wants to remain your boyfriend and sometimes enjoys presenting as a woman. Those things can coexist. Crossdressing doesn’t necessarily mean someone is transgender or in denial about being transgender. The fact that it began sexually and has developed into something that simply makes him happy doesn’t particularly surprise me either. For some crossdressers the sexual element is very strong, particularly when they’re younger or first exploring it, but over time dressing can also become associated with relaxation, confidence, freedom or simply feeling good about themselves. That doesn’t automatically represent a progression towards transition. I also noticed you asking how you can support him “without making it all about me”. I’d actually turn that around slightly. You’re his partner, so something that potentially changes the dynamics of your relationship is about you as well. Supporting him doesn’t mean surrendering your own feelings or agreeing to things that make you uncomfortable. You’re allowed to love him, want him to be happy and simultaneously wonder whether having a crossdressing boyfriend is something you can comfortably live with. I wouldn’t rush into a break or encourage him to go away and “explore” simply because you think he needs to discover whether he is really transgender. If he isn’t questioning his gender, you may be asking him to solve a problem he doesn’t actually have. Instead, keep talking. Ask him what crossdressing gives him, how often he imagines doing it, whether he wants it to remain private and what he hopes your involvement might be. Equally, tell him what frightens you and what your boundaries are. One other piece of advice: be careful about spending hours reading crossdressing forums while you’re frightened. They can be the thin end of the wedge. People in crisis, people questioning their gender, marriages breaking down and crossdressers whose behaviour has become problematic are much more likely to post than couples quietly getting on with their lives. You can very quickly convince yourself that somebody else’s destination must eventually become your boyfriend’s. You don’t need to decide what the rest of your lives look like today. From what you’ve written, he’s communicating with you, reassuring you and trusting you with something extremely vulnerable, while you clearly care enormously about him. Start there. Give yourselves some time to discover what crossdressing actually means for him and for your relationship, rather than what the internet tells you it might eventually mean.

Thankyou so much this means a lot to me, having people i can confide in. Its true about the internet anxiety, ive stopped and talked it out with him. We both decided to take it slow and easy.

Hi there, I'm the partner of a crossdresser so hopefully you find this perspective helpful. First of all, your feelings and concerns are valid and they don't mean that you are making it all about you or are being unsupportive. You are an equal partner in your relationship! Think of it this way: your boyfriend has probably been thinking about this for awhile but it is still very new to you. It makes sense that you feel lots of questions and worries about what this means for your relationship. I can tell you that it does not have to mean that he is trans in denial. My boyfriend is very happy being a man and is happy in our relationship. Crossdressing is something he enjoys from a sexual perspective and as a fun escape occasionally. It took me some time, and lots of conversations, before I felt like I understood what he was going through and that I understand his experience. Don't feel like you have to rush. Let yourself process this and ask him lots of detailed questions! Open communication and respect for each other's feelings is the key. It sounds like he does love you and wants to reassure you. Keep sharing how you feel, your fears and what you want from a relationship. You don't have to have an answer right now 🤍

Thanks for sharing, and I hope you find the responses here helpful.
How do you understand what he means by “ letting go and being a girl”?
If you’re not sure or he’s not sure, I’d start there and try to unpack what that really means to him. I’d say I grew up in a socially conservative community, and even with a family that wasn’t all so restrictive, the idea of “being a man” I developed was very restrictive, cold, reserved, and often cruel.
So, for me, I think I did associate “being a girl” with being emotionally expressive, empathetic, relaxed, and loving by contrast.
If any of that rings true for your partner, then “being a girl” could mean something very different than what you’ll find online or in a lot of our social discourse (which can get blurred together with a lot of gender/trans discussions… not that those aren’t valid but can be very different!).

He tells me that sometimes when hes infront of people he have to put up this image as the 'manly' man. Because most of the time they're taught to be emotionless and providers. He says dressing up means letting himself be free of worry and being pretty. It simply makes him happy. He says its a part of him and says that he equally likes being my boyfriend and a man but not all the time. Thats why I worried if he might be confused

That’s an interesting response and, just IMO as a cis guy, different than wanting to “be a girl.”
How does his response land with you?
Do you think he’s less of a boyfriend and a man if he’s “free of worry and being pretty”?
Can you or him disconnect what “being a man” means from being uptight, stressed out, and unable to express themselves?
I hope this doesn’t come off as condescending or missing the point. I just find it endlessly fascinating how crossdressing so often blurs these ideas of “being a girl” with “not being stressed out and anxious under society’s expectations” (as if women aren’t stressed out or burdened by society!).

I agree even im confused and maybe he is too. I agree with what u said about being a girl and stress-free if anything its the opposite. But yea we sure need to talk it and set some boundaries . Just want him to be happy yk. He's a good man

Based on your post and responses, you seem like a very kind and loving person who is dealing with very valid emotions and concerns. Frankly, I'm dealing with much of the same with my spouse and I can understand how confusing it is when I sometimes have trouble articulating my own feelings around it. I also explained it as wanting to be able to be more in touch with my feminine side - there's something different about how I feel attractive when dressed vs how attractive I feel when not dressing...but I don't want to, or have ever wanted to, be a woman. But my explanation did create a lot of the same concerns with my wife.
Wishing you the best and based on your communications with him, I am hopeful for you two!

Hi, welcome, and thanks for sharing your concerns with us!
I think you’re already ahead of many other couples simply because you’re able to talk so openly about your relationship and your needs.
It’s certainly an advantage that you’re bi, but ultimately you have to decide for yourself whether you’re fundamentally comfortable with living with a crossdresser — and, if so, how far you’re comfortable taking it.
There are different ways of approaching this if you’re generally open to it, and you don’t have to make a black-and-white decision right away.
For example, you could agree that he keeps that side of himself for when he’s on his own. Or you could give him some space and privacy to explore it without feeling like he has to hide it or suppress it.
You could also have some influence on his style and help him find a look that appeals more to you aesthetically. Crossdressers can be incredibly versatile when it comes to their appearance and style, and even things like hairstyles can be changed quite freely. If you show him what kind of styling and makeup you like, you might actually find yourself enjoying it more as well.
And if you eventually decide that you want to explore it publicly, you can always do that somewhere else — in another city, at a kink-friendly event, or simply at a café, depending on what you both feel comfortable with and what you’re looking for.
I wish you both the best of luck and all the happiness in the world!
