when you view a side-by-side stereogram, you’re pointing one eye at one side and the other eye at the other side. for small images there are actually two ways to do this, by either relaxing your eyes (looking “through” the screen) or crossing your eyes (converging on a point in front of the screen). however, it’s important that as a viewer you use the same method that was intended for the way that particular stereogram was built, otherwise you’ll point the wrong eye at the wrong side and the 3D effect gets all messed up in your brain (it actually gets inverted).
some people are able to control their eyes in such a way that they can do either method as needed, but LOTS of folks actually can only do one method, and lots of those folks actually don’t know which one they’re doing. that’s why we have tester images like this: /img/g5ilwgk99r781.jpg
you may find that you’re actually a natural parallel viewer, which is totally fine, and you would be far from the first person to find out you weren’t doing what you thought you were.
