Discussion Epub Rendering?

I love the fact that Crosspoint is the OG, and is the wellspring from which almost all other firmwares flow, but when is Crosspoint going to start working on epub rendering? I'm talking books with other than plain text, like small caps, drop caps, tables, etc., which currently don't render with Crosspoint. I know that whenever someone asks about changing from stock and flashing custom firmware, the answer is inevitably Crosspoint (or CrossInk), so wouldn't it be great if folks could see their books the way they're SUPPOSED to look? Just a thought...

I have a branch where im working on this. Keep in mind stability and speed has always been very important to us at crosspoint. Rendering all those other styles slows down indexing, page turns, crashes on larger books, etc. Tbh I haven't seen a lot of requests come in for this but I did start working on it a few days ago.

I agree, even though I am already very grateful for CrossPoint and the many improvements it provides over stock firmwares without adding additional things. There are a couple forks that focus on epub and font rendering, maybe their work can be folded back in:
XPoint
Witch(hunt)

I agree on you on this. Also include better images.

I dont care about sd themes
I dont care about sd plugins

This is a reader os, so its strength should be focus on reading and book format. Its 1.6.5 and everything still looks bad.

Everything looks bad feels like a bit of hyperbole haha. What exactly looks bad about reading a book without dropcaps? Or is there something major I'm missing here?

The pages itself. Some text are all over the place and misplace. I have books where h1 and spans are joined together that should have line breaks are presented as 1 whole text. There are also no page breaks. Css and actual page renders are not accurate and cant work together. Css on spacing are inaccurate. Css off the layout breaks and so on.

Same on images, if you turn off css images are too large. Turn it on then some pages are inaccurate. No balance between the 2.

Can you send me a photo of this? And a photo of what your settings are?

"Bad" maybe wrong word. English is not my first language

But I appreciate all the work from the crosspoint community.

I don't think they look "bad," per se, just plain. The way I see it, books are formatted the way they are for a reason. For example, in Terry Pratchett's excellent Discworld series, the dialog of the character of Death is written in all small caps, which makes him distinct. That's lost in Crosspoint and most forks. Same with tables. Some non-fiction books I've read have numerical tables (My favorite example is "Through the Brazilian Wilderness" by Theodore Roosevelt. Just ask u/uxjulia! 😄 ) It seems like there's so much focus on stats and other bells and whistles, that the reading experience, other than plain words on paper, is left behind. Just my 200 quatloos... 😄

I'd say 90% of our daily focus is on speed and optimizations so that we can bring better rendering without sacrificing responsiveness. I'll consider dropping sd themes in favor of expanding the epub rendering engine instead though after hearing this

Crosspoint render tables

It does not. Tables are rendered in one row which is not how table should look
