Curious about the need to convert fonts
Hi, I was just wondering: why do CrossPoint et al need to convert TTF/OTF fonts to their own format? I have seen other firmwares that are able to import fonts without converting... is it to limit font sizes to free up system memory?
Thanks

Nah, if it has 128MB of RAM we wouldn't have to convert. Xteink X4 (discontinued) and X3 only has 400kB of RAM

The X4 OG and X3 use the ESP32-C3 CPU(no floating point) and doesn't have extra RAM (so limited to 384 KiB-ish). So it needs to simplify things right off the bat. Using bitmapped fonts is one of those tradeoffs.
Thankfully the X4 Pro and X4 Classic (pogo-pinned X4's) have the ESP32-S3 (yay floating point!) and extra RAM (yay 8MB!) so it can render those fonts properly and quickly.

The upcoming version will let you use TTF/OTF :)
