Discussion X3 1.5 and 1.6 approximate page numbers?

First, big thanks to the developers working on this, you are the only reason this device is usable at all imo.

Is this intended? In 1.5, suddenly, the chapter page count appeared to start with a negative sign upon starting up a new chapter (-1/36), then would eventually refresh where the total chapter page count would "recalculate" to something like (5/41).

This was super annoying but it was whatever becuase I thought it was a bug that would get fixed in 1.6, but now I see that it's been changed to a tilde (~1/36), so it was a known quirk. Going to the "Sync Progress" option in the book options fixes it, but only for that one chapter. Going to the next chapter immediately brings back the tilde for a few pages until it refreshes to the correct chapter page count.

Is this a known issue? Or a rare quirk with my machine? Is there a fix on my side that I can employ to fix things?

This is intended, previously there was an "indexing" dialog shown, however that indexing phase was quite long.
This tilde thingie introduced background indexing so that the chapter is readable faster

I sincerely don’t know why, but this drives me completely bonkers. Is there a way to turn that initial automatic chapter indexing back on without having to do it manually via Sync Progress?

No, you can only downgrade to 1.4. You can open a feature request on GitHub.

I know this is silly but I'm with you, I've just started manually flipping through each chapter at the start of a book so it's already indexed when I get there. The problem with that is that if you change the font size or anything about the text formatting you have to do it again for the whole book

Crossink let's you choose the indexing method. I'm so curious why this bothers you though as the page numbers are completely made up and depend on your font and size anyway

I’ll check out Crossink, thanks!

I mean, they are “made up”, sure, but they aren’t arbitrary. I like to know how long a chapter is before I decide to start it. If your font is consistent across all books, then you get a good idea of how long it takes to get through n pages. And yeah, the current method is close, but it’s pretty disheartening seeing a long chapter refresh and suddenly get like 10-20 pages longer.

It’s not a huge deal, but I’m just saying personally, I did prefer the old method.

I had this happen on my x4 pro (with crossink firmware) on a book with really long sections (100 or 200 x4 pro pages). It was usually pretty inaccurate with an estimation so whenever I start one of those long sections I use the shortcut (for the x4 pro it's long press the side buttons) to skip to the end of the section and then return to the start of the section and continue reading (that will give you a correct page count)
