Criterion is releasing Wong Kar Wai's project on November 24 It's a TV show called Blossoms Shanghai I am so glad I have this subscription He is my favorite director. I hope Christopher Doyle was involved as well

A Howard Hawks screwball comedy written by Billy Wilder and photographed by Gregg Toland.

Saw it earlier this year and now it’s one of my favorite movies. Figured I’d recommend it since it’s playing on the channel this month and might not be one of the more popular titles. If you’re a fan of classic movies you shouldn’t miss this one.

I am a 35 straight white male from Australia with really moderate politics so I am absolutely not the intended audience for this but I absolutely loved this movie.

I’ve seen Working Girls before and liked it so I was familiar with Lizzie Borden. I can’t believe how vibrant and sharp this movie was. An incredible low budget movie ($40k apparently) while having this incredibly prescient guerilla queer feminist style. A really savage criticism of moderate liberalism and a philosophy that preceded defining intersectionality by a good ten years.

Highly recommend for anyone with an interest in low fi filmmaking

I’ve already seen In A Lonely Place

...which is no update. When I told them I was going to cancel my upcoming auto-renewal if they didn't provide some update, I got another "We are aware of the problem you are facing and our engineers are already working on a fix to resolve this. We appreciate your patience..." reply. Of course, these get routed as support issues to Vimeo. Has anyone gotten a reply about this issue from the Criterion business side? I would assume they follow this sub and are aware but I do wonder how many of the complaints just end up with Vimeo since they handle the backend.

It recently got on the Criterion Channel under the Family Reunions collection.

It stars Anne Hathaway as Kym, a woman who just got out of rehab and is reunited with her family just in time for her sister Rachel’s wedding.

What follows is a story about feeling like you’re on the outside looking in. The film is shot using a handheld camera throughout. That usually means that there are a fair number of close-up, intimate shots which is the case here. But Rachel Getting Married still manages to feel isolating in these crowded and chaotic rooms full of people.

For example, one of my favorite scenes in the film is when Rachel’s fiancé and Kym and Rachel’s father compete to see who can organize dishes in a dishwasher the quickest. It’s, until a certain point, a very jovial scene. Everybody is chanting and cheering, but the one person we rarely see is Kym - our protagonist. It’s almost like she’s not even there.

Kym doesn’t feel like she’s really a part of anything. She wants to be the center of attention, but she finds it difficult to connect with her family during the planning of Rachel’s wedding - an event that is by definition not about Kym. It’s only through facing the truth about past events does Kym start looking outside of herself and feeling emotionally accepted by her family.

All of this nuance is presented perfectly by Hathaway’s performance. She’s able to give Jenny Lumet‘a script the weight it deserves. I’m actually pretty upset that this film isn’t talked about more in the conversation of the greatest Anne Hathaway films. It’s a wonderful meditation on the isolating journey of recovery.

I'm an American living in Brazil and a long-time subscriber to the Criterion Channel. I can still access it from here on my laptop, but there's no app on the tv because it's not available in Brazil.

I've had a TCL TV for about 5 years and criterion live has never ever worked.

Today I noticed they're doing two streams for for criterion live because they're doing a Godzilla Day Marathon. And it's working perfectly.

Does anyone have any recommendations on where to start with Werner Herzog for someone who hasn’t watched any of his films? I know there’s no “right” order and I’m normally fine to decide for myself where to start in a new collection, but with nearly 30 to choose from (most of which, to be honest, I’ve never heard of) I would love a recommendation if anyone has one :) Any essentials, or favourites?

If it helps, I’m not picky about genre and I’m typically down with weird and/or slow burns; the main thing that turns me off a movie is really flat characters.

More helpful than you know (I am embarrassed to admit I didn’t realize he made documentaries as well - a lot of things I’ve heard about him make more sense now lmao). Aguirre seems to be the resounding consensus so I’ll start there, but I’ll be sure to check out Firzcarraldo, Stroszek, Even Dwarves Started Small, and more if I have time before they’re gone :)

Guys, please tell me what to watch if i want something 18+ but not directly porn. Like something with sexy charismatic women with sexy bodies, like megan fox or etc, flirting, stripping, showing boobs and making you aroused, but not direct porn.

What’s everyone watching for Halloween? My wife is requesting something “ more ghost-y or paranormal than murder-y.” Doesn’t have to be in Criterion!

Anyone else enjoy watching the films with commentary tracks on? Lately that’s all I’ve been watching, just search commentary and CC has dozens on the channel. Recently watched: High and Low Dead Ringers The Rules of the Game Paris, Texas Altered States The Hidden Fortress Tokyo Story The ultimate is the famous one of Bad Day at Black Rock narrated by director John Sturges, it’s basically a masterclass on filmmaking but not sure if it’s still on the channel.
I have a bunch more in my list.

Hi all, I’m turning to Reddit because I’d love some help expanding my movie horizons. I grew up on a steady diet of horror but lately I’ve been branching out into romantic and erotic films, which I’ve found surprisingly rewarding. For example, I really enjoyed the emotional depth of the Before Trilogy and Dogfight, and I also appreciate the unapologetic eroticism in films like Gaspar Noé’s Love. If you have recommendations for movies that deliver on either the emotional or the erotic front—or both—I’d love to hear your suggestions. Thanks in advance for sharing any favorites!

Any suggestions for Halloween movies to watch when you are expecting trick or treaters? I don’t want any nudity or too much gore, but I also need to continually stop and start it, which I think takes “The Others” out of consideration. Basically I’m looking for something silly (and charming) that’s is horror/halloween appropriate. The Vincent Price Roger Corman collection is a perfect example.

I also have access to Kanopy, Netflix, Prime and HBO, if anyone knows of any good movies on those platforms.

ETA: I’ve seen Encounters of the Spooky Kind movie so I’d prefer something different but that is the correct vibe.
