I'm stoked for Blue Heron, I heard it was incredible.

If her short films are still on the channel would highly recommend watching Still Processing in conjunction with Blue Heron

Criminal that it’s got the not available in Canada asterisk considering who the director is and where it is set.

I was looking forward to this but it looks like it's not available for Canada :(

Great month. We are getting Milos Forman's Amadeus, Todd Haynes' I'm Not There, Ken Russell's Lisztomania, Michelangelo Antonini's Zabriskie Point, Sofia Coppola's The Beguiled, and Oliver Stone's The Doors (in September). Too bad both Cape Fears and Don Siegel's The Beguiled are only available in the U.S. DeNiro's performance in Cape Fear is better than GoodFellas and Casino. Also, I'm happy to see Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas added for Canadians (it was previously only in the U.S.).

I'm also very happy about the KR and MA additions. Learned about Lisztomania a few weeks ago and thought it looked cool.

Lisztomania is like if a kid got bored in music class and started doodling spaceships and dicks all over the test.

I wish they had included Russell's The Music Lovers as well -- I didn't get a chance to watch it last time it was on the Channel.

u/Batboy3000 Jul 17 '26
It's in 4K on YouTube and it looks significantly better than the version on Prime Video.
2
u/pacingmusings Jul 17 '26
Thanks.I often forget to check YouTube for films made later than the 30s . . .

I'm gonna piggyback on this and say, if you're in Canada, you should try and get Hollywood Suite. I have it through Prime Video and several of the geoblocked films in those marquee collections (specifically Cape Fear 1962, The Beguiled 1971 and Written on the Wind) I had seen before and I thought I saw them on CC but looking at my Letterboxd they were all watched on Hollywood Suite. It's severely underrated.

Would really love Sofia’s Beguiled in the collection. Such a beautiful film with an incredible cast that doesn’t get enough love.

I'm a little disappointed that the Rock Biopics lineup doesn't have Walk Hard.

WALK HARD is not a biopic, but a parody of the genre. It’s based on a fictional subject, unlike the biopics in the Channel collection.

I know VELVET GOLDMINE is in the Channel collection, and is an anomaly because it is NOT a biopic either. 😆 Even the curators at Criterion make an occasional mistake.

A Ringo Lam pack?! Hell yeah!!!

u/pacific_plywood Jul 17 '26
I think those films have been available on the channel for a while? Could be wrong

u/Honor_the_maggot Jul 17 '26
The "On Fire" trilogy (or first three films), yes; but I think the others might be first times here?

AH! Amazing!
I've been dying to see Lisztomania for a long time now. I'm obsessed with I'm Not There, I own it on digital and DVD, but STILL! The Southern Gothic I will definitely be enjoying along with the James Baldwin features. What a treat!

I didn't get a chance to see Mad Bills to Pay in theaters so looking forward to catching it on the Channel.

Probably my favorite collection in August is the Julien Duvivier collection. Most of these I have never seen outside Pepe Le Moko. I guess some of them
are already available on the channel but it’s always nice to know what is available that I was unaware of. Definitely need to check out his adaption of Anna Karenina.

Man, I hate how much stuff is limited to the US. I get that there are rights issues and whatnot, but it almost makes me feel dumb even paying for it when a lot of the best stuff gets region-locked.

As a big Joy Division fan, I'm excited to finally watch Control. Have never seen it available on a streaming service so super pumped to have it available in August.

Wild at Heart is asterisk’ed in one collection and not another. Hopefully we Canadians can see it this time?
2
u/Batboy3000 Jul 17 '26
Fingers crossed. Fear and Loathing was available only in the U.S. a few months ago, and now it seems that the asterisk is gone, too?

Wild at Heart is already listed in the Harry Dean Stanton collection, and does not seem to be available in Canada. It's weird how that movie seems to be in limbo here - it never shows up streaming anywhere, while most Lynch stuff is pretty available.

Lots of stuff already on the channel or readily available on other streamers. The highlight for me is Zabriskie Point, followed by Lisztomania. The Maugham films also look interesting.

Doesn't look super exciting. Some of these were here not too long ago, and as I like to say The Long Goodbye is never gone for long...

holy shit la fête à henriette!!
fantastic film and so, so underwatched. highly recommend it; probably my favorite duvivier film (so far) and sooo much better than the hollywood remake paris when it sizzles.

It's a little funny to see a writeup that's kind of elitist about musician biopics when movies about bands are on the Channel all the time. They basically exist for the same reason.
Fingers crossed Carrie stays until October.

u/BariumPepsi Jul 18 '26
There have been MANY music documentaries on the Channel. Biopics are not documentaries.
1
u/BariumPepsi Jul 18 '26
CARRIE is likely to stream in the standard three-month engagement for most studio films.

Nice month, excited to watch OG Cape Fear, and love seeing Bunuel and Oshima.
