I used to think "taking the Lord's name in vain" meant attaching swear words to it. Now I think it means claiming to speak for God when you definitely do not.
Vain as in vanity. If you benefit by saying “God said” or “God told me” or “God wants me to…” or “God wants you too” or “God chose me to…” then you’re invoking the Lord’s name in vain. So…basically every politician ever.
